Tim Zhang nailed Ga State, UCLA and UAB.

He also picked Northeastern and Texas 2 rounds though.

I'm going through the payments. I have an excel file of all the PayPal payments and in the name column its listed First Name Last Name. Is there a way to sort the file so it's alphabetically by last name without going in and physically change the names to last name, first name?

Your best bet may be to separate the name column into two columns. You can do that by using the Text to Columns button. If any name has three parts then it will have to be fixed manually afterwards.

Steps using Excel 2013
  • Highlight the column
  • Go to Data Tab
  • Click Text to Columns under Data Tools
  • Make sure Delimited is selected (default)
  • Click Next
  • Check "Space" which means that it will separate into different columns using any space
  • Click Next
  • Click Finish

The standings don't seem to be updated. The home page of the pool says the page was last updated today and when I click on "Player Picks," all the games seem to be up to date. But when I click on "Pool Standings," it shows Tim Zhang in the lead with 6 correct picks and says I have 7 correct picks (rather than 11). Same when I click on "Alphabetical Standings." Top of the page says last updated "3/19/2015 at 9:53 PM (1st Round In-Progress)."

I've tried clearing my cache and checked a different browser but am getting the same results everywhere, both PC and iPad. Is it just me?

I don't really disagree with you but that's how the program calculates it. I have thought about doing away with the bonus points but when I ever suggest most people say they like the underdog points and tell me to keep it.
Bonus points seem to be pretty overpowered. The current leader correctly predicted only 14 of the 32 first round games, despite the fact that this is one of the "chalkiest" tournaments in recent history.

Why is that a problem? Current leader. If you pick a bunch of first round upsets, you get rewarded when the games are worth only one point. But you're dead down the road.

I'm sure everyone reading this has paid. But if I don't run the pool next year it's because it's the sweet 16 and I'm still owed $800.

That's garbage. I wish there was a way to not allow people to enter if they haven't paid yet. And I'm sorry, I know how annoying chasing people down is.

It's but as long as I accept checks I'm not sure what I can do.

Appreciate the response, I actually got swamped Thursday morning at work and didn't even make it into your bracket this year. What I don't like about the scoring system is that with the system, someone could actually have a perfect bracket and lose.

Huh?

If they have a perfect bracket that means they are getting all those bonus points you were talking about. By definition you can't outscore that no matter what the system is.

Someone a few years ago casually admitted they predicted a perfect bracket. Before today, that was the stupidest comment I've read about brackets. This one is even better, tho. "If you score the most points that are literally possible, you might lose." That's solid.

Murf, is there a way for us to confirm you received our payment, without individually emailing you and forcing you to respond to all of them?  I sent my check out a while back, but I don't know if it's cleared or not and just figured I'd check and make sure but I don't see any paid/unpaid list on the site or anything.

Cool.  Wasn't really just asking for me though.  Was wondering if there was a place to look so you wouldn't be asked to individually look it up for folks.  I know some of the other pools I have, the person running it has a line that just says paid, with a Y or N next to everyone's name.  Although I suppose that could be just as much of a pain in the ass because then you have to manually input it there each time you receive a payment.

Move along, nothing to see here.

As an aside, is nobody watching the games tonight?  Notre Dame just looked pretty damn good beating the Shockers, and Wisconsin/UNC are in a battle.  I've been saying it for a while, but I think the Irish have the type of team that could actually give Kentucky a run, so I'm looking forward to seeing that matchup. .

How many people generally pay by check? Being lax about how long people have to pay opens up the potential to watch the first weekend and hold out if your bracket(s) go to hell.

If you want to do checks, I think it would make life easier to just say "checks need to be postmarked by Thursday." You might not have everyone's money until Monday/Tuesday, but at least you can just toss brackets where people either A) didn't pay or B) waited, saw their bracket did OK, and then tried to slip the check in the mail after the first weekend.

Also, another reason to probably not highlight prize funds until Final Four weekend.

Sucks that people aren't ponying up, though. I've started giving away people's fantasy teams (I commish a couple leagues) before the draft if they don't pay. I finally gave up on having people pay me in September after sending them 1000 text messages.

It's about half and half. And for the most part I get all the money but it just takes some work. And while the bold is possible I think it's mostly laziness. It annoys me that it takes longer to do your bracket than it takes to make the payment but they don't do it.

I clearly did my math wrong, and was off by a point with my "ideal" scenario (below). That said it's very easily for a 2, 3 or 4 miss bracket to beat a 1 loss bracket even if all the losses occur in the same round, but I guess that's kind of the point in the underdog scoring. I guess it just comes down to me preferring accuracy to suggesting to bet crazy on underdogs, which is why I don't mind the underdog bonus but don't like it being based on the seed of an incorrect pick rather than what the actual upset was worth.

But don't mind me, I've clearly been drinking too heavily lately.

1st round:
Top seed always wins except 13 beats 4 and in same region 12 beats 5. Difference is bracket 2 has 5 beating 12 in first round.
Bracket 1 gets 32 points + 13-4=9 + 12-5 =7 = 48
Bracket 2 gets 31 points + 13-4 = 9 = 40

2nd round:
Bracket 1 gets 32 points + 48 +13-12 = 81
Bracket 2 gets 32 points + 40 + 13-5=8 = 80

Just thought I'm mention that the "Player scenario" tab under the pool reports is probably one of the coolest things I've seen in any pool I've been in.  Besides officially letting me know that I have no chance, and haven't had one since like the third game of the tournament, knowing who you want to root for if you are in the hunt without having to do a whole lot of searching around and hours of writing shit down is pretty awesome.

Looks like it'll be Kathy O. (if Wisconsin wins) or Nick P. (Duke).  Either of them SoSH members?

If they are, no offense to Nick, but here we go Kathy, here we go.

Is Dan Weiner a member here or does anyone know him?  Right now, him and I would tie for 2nd (tiebreaker?) if Duke wins.  If so, send me a PM.

Got to say I feel a little bad for Kathy. She wins if Wisconsin wins but still tied for 2nd with the Duke win but drops to fourth on the tiebreaker. First time I remember the tie breaker meaning anything.
