Doesn't Geno have way more money than his assailant? How does he end up in debt to him?

Geno might not have been carrying any with him on a trip to Subway

Lots of gambling happens at training camp.  I dealt poker to a bunch of Arizona Cardinals during my internship and the pots grew into the 5 figures.  It was a nice little 10% cut I took.

I'm pretty sure gambling is illegal so I doubt it's that.

At this point Bowles can't possibly know what undercurrents contributed to the fight/punch.

2nd year players fighting for a roster spot just don't go around punching the starting QB, even with Enemkpali's history (which is not all that egregious given the state of NFL & the law).

I think Bowles is a complete straight-shooter, so can't imagine him covering up for Geno. But I do think he may not be aware of any (alleged) gambling debts or whatever that caused the incident.

Edit: Mehta tweets that IK was "remorseful" while Geno was "pissed". Difference between a player guaranteed a roster spot vs. not.

Bowles may be the best addition Jets made this off-season, not #24. What a refreshing change after the Rexy Show. I think Bills fans are in for a rude awakening -- if not this year then next.

Wouldn't we all rather have Geno play?

Sure, I guess. But with QBs at that level, who really knows.

The point is now that if Fitzpatrick goes down, where are they?

The fact that the Pats are one judge's decision and one injury away from Ryan Lindley starting 4 games is tempering my schadenfreude.

Circus is officially back, folks:

@AlbertBreer Can't make it up: @MMehtaNYDN's question at Bowles' presser interrupted by video-game music that sounded like Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

Also, here's Esiason ripping Geno a new one. Drops hints at gambling debts & calling the incident "embarrassing". Thought it was surprising to even have Geno come back this year, calls him "immature" and "not putting in" all the work he needs:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/0ap3000000508720/Esiason-It-s-not-shocking-it-s-very-disappointing

Breer also hints at $$$ problems:

@AlbertBreer According to a source, the Geno Smith/IK Enemkpali fight in the Jets locker room was indeed over money.

No. I was banned from them for arguing deflate gate.

I would also think if it was say gronk. The person that punched him would also be leaving in an ambulance

I think we're all underestimating how savvy Enemkpali may be:

@AroundTheNFL Jets C Nick Mangold was in trainers room when The Punch happened. Laments not being there to stop things from escalating.

That's not even funny.  Is he proud of that?  He's really making it hard to remember his time here fondly at all.  Not that he cares, but damn if the dude didn't have quick hips and reflexes he'd be some insecure dork with his hands in his pocket at a shitty club calling every girl fat.

Why does Revis have to be such a dick on all fronts? Dude, you have ZERO personality and charisma, the Patriots got you a ring, you left and that's okay, but just keep quiet. The guy is among the best defensive players I've ever seen and he's making it really hard for me to remember him fondly in the future.

Story behind the punch that broke Geno Smith's jaw in two places:
At the heart of the dispute between former Jets LB IK Enemkpali and quarterback Geno Smith is $600 that Enemkpali believed Smith owed him, per league sources. Enemkpali purchased a plane ticket for Smith to attend his July 11 football camp at Pfugerville High School in Pfugerville, Texas. However, days before the camp, a person close to Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami and Smith did not attend Enemkpali’s camp, per sources. After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that the Jets’ quarterback refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase a plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but he did not. Enkempali confronted Smith today about the money and the confrontation ended in a punch and broken jaw.

Damn, what would he have broken if it was a grand?  Or, you know, Geno didn't actually have a pretty good reason for not showing up to do this dude a favor?

While it's fun to think about, the possibility of IK facing criminal charges should dissuade the Patriots, or anyone else.

espn: From representatives of IK Enemkpali, the player who punched Geno Smith and broke his jaw: "I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans. Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation."

Geno and his face may disagree with that characterization of it.

Talking about a Sophie's Choice for NJ Prosecutors office. On one hand you have some one knocking out the starting QB of the NY Jets, OTOH, it's Geno Smith. I suspect no charges will be filed.

Dude was slotted to make $585K this year. How many Jets fans would pay $585,000 for the opportunity to punch Geno Smith in the face?

I also like to imagine another player running over to Geno with this reaction:

Does he have a gofundme page up yet?

CC has plenty of company on NFLN right now. Willie McGinest and Nate Burleson are making this point emphatically, if more articulately.

If you are the QB, you don't put yourself in this situation to begin with. When the altercation begins and you are the QB, you defuse it. And you sure as hell don't poke your finger in the other guy's face.

Smith is getting crushed.

QBs have been punched by teammates for as long as football's been played. The Gil Brandt tweet up thread says Staubach got it once. Drew Barker of Kentucky got it from a former teammate at a bar, and there wasn't a riot.

Now, I agree with you after the bold. But QBs are predisposed to getting into potential face-punching situations. Good ones defuse it, or have teammates defuse it.

Far more troubling to me is the general sentiment that IKE was justified because Smith put a finger in his face. That shit is not manly, it's dumb.
