Kellen Moore for #2!

edit: Honestly wouldn't surprise me if they kept him as a backup. For the record, I'm a Boise State homer.

The issue isn't that they need someone in 2-3 years; the issue is that they might need someone after 2-3 minutes. Romo's back injury - not the collarbone - remains the big problem. I realize I've beat this drum before, but the Cowboys had, like, the 4th worst backup QB situation in the league and it bit them directly on the ass this season. Losing Dez too made it a complete clusterfuck, but Weeden/CasselMoore can't be the backup plan, again.

So...Manziel jokes aside, it's probably a better option than a QB at #4 in the draft. There's no QB I'd take there; any QB in this draft needs to sit and develop. Can you sit & develop the #4 overall pick? I don't think so. And since Romo could be done at any moment, having a guy ready to play Week 1 as the backup makes more sense than a long-term developmental investment in draft capital.

Assume Manziel just needs Daddy Jerruh to put him in the Dez Behavior Management Program (patent pending) to harness his talent? Isn't he a better fit - in exchange for a 6th round pick, max - as a backup if Romo stays healthy and the Cowboys make a ride at their closing window?

They're going to take Vernon Hargreaves from Florida. They always take CB when they draft this high and they need one anyways.

Ideally they'd be able to trade down and get some extra picks but I don't think there's anybody someone wants desperately enough.

I think that's exactly right if you judge the talent worth the pick and development. Play behind Romo for a year or collarbone or two.
Nearly all qbs need a year or two to study not get thrown to the wolves. Plus the "best oline" to sit behind.

It's a great situation for how you should develop a qb. But no one has any patience to be good.

Aside from the problems with carrying three quarterbacks on the roster, Manziel is not and will not ever be a good fit in Dallas. I get that you want to see the sideshow but no amount of justification will ever make this a sound football move (though, as Winger pointed out, this isn't exactly a Jerry Jones hallmark).

There are a few intriguing QBs who should be available in free agency. The name that stands out to me the most is Colt McCoy. That's the kind of guy they should be targeting: good enough to win you a game or two, but doesn't really have any outlandish hopes of landing a starting job.

Drew Stanton and Matt Flynn are also names that would be infinitely better fits than Manziel. And none of those guys would cost any draft picks. I know, the HORROR of the Cowboys not doing something monumentally stupid. What would you masturbate to over the offseason?

Of course Colt McCoy is a better fit; he's a former Longhorn not some stupid Aggie, right? ;-)

I don't really care who it ends up being, so long as it is a better backup plan than the one I (correctly) predicted was going to lead to disaster. Though Drew Stanton is not any better than Weeden, so ya know...

Well, sure, that doesn't hurt. I was thinking more along the lines of him not being a complete and total fuck up. Plus, he's actually won a game or two in the NFL. With the Browns, even.

Time for THE SANCHIZE!
I'd prefer that one million times out of a million over Manziel.

You know who would be an interesting backup for the Cowboys ... Blaine Gabbert.

If the next SF coach is given the mission of rehabbing Kaepernick, Gabbert might not be a style-fit as a backup.

I could get behind this. I liked some of what I saw of him this season - which was admittedly very little.

I hope to Christ it's not because Manziel is now partying it up in New Orleans.

Bosoxen, what are your few bright spots of this past trainwreck season? McFadden looked serviceable, right?

That's one. But I trust him to repeat it as much as I trusted Murray to repeat his 2014. Which is to say I don't.

Other bright spots for me:

Byron Jones - can't wait for him to take over for one of those useless safeties.
DeMarcus Lawrence - came on really strong towards the end of the season (easy to forget this was his first full season).
Defensive improvement - I don't know what to make of this. Part of me is impressed that they managed to keep the Cowboys in games despite the lack of sacks and turnovers. The other part of me knows that teams really didn't attack them much in the second half of the season because they knew the offense couldn't score 10 points per game.

That's pretty much it.

What's the take on Hardy coming back? Likely, not likely. And were it up to you would you have him back?

Jones, Lawrence, and Randy Gregory were all nice bright spots for the future. Dan Bailey is a stud. The OL will be better next season. Gavin Escobar might have turned a corner. Witten doesn't look totally cooked. Maybe Sean Lee will be healthy for the 3 games of the playoffs next year.

Everything I've read suggests he'd like to stay but that Garrett is lukewarm about the idea. Of course, we all know he's not the one wearing the big boy pants in that organization, so who knows.

I would like him back but I haven't heard a peep about how likely it would be. Gun to my head, I say he bolts for the biggest contract offer, which won't be coming from Dallas.
