The actual question was, "Which five QB would you rather have next season?" Age could certainly be a factor next season for Brady and Palmer, not so much for Roethlisberger and Rodgers.

Luck got significantly better from his rookie season to his 2014 season, only his third year in the NFL. And it's not like he was surrounded by incredible talent.

Heading into this year, he was looking like a generational talent. And then he got hurt, so it's really difficult to figure out how 2015 impacts the future. Yes, Cousins had a monster 2015 and he made Luck look like a journeyman.

But Luck is a really good quarterback who improved significantly from his rookie season to his 3rd. He took his team to the playoffs each season and he's won 3 career playoff games. Cutler, Cousins, Bridgewater, Wintson, and Mariota have won one combined. It's not out of the realm of reality to think Luck isn't going to continue to improve, assuming he gets healthy.

There is no conversation where you can say Bridgewater, Cutler, Winston, or Mariota compare to Luck in the short, intermediate, or long term.

The discussion started by discussing the team's performance this year and a comment was made that they lost their top 5 QB to injury.

For next year and next year only, I would gladly take both Brady and Palmer over Luck.

I wouldn't take Palmer over Luck in 2016. That's aggressive. I would take Brady, Newton, and Wilson over Luck for 2016. And that is it. Just one man's opinion. I think the Colts hatred is throwing a shroud over how good Luck is and can be and I respect that. I hate the franchise, I hate the owner, I hate Payton, and I am not a fan of Luck. But he's good.

Really? Palmer was really, really good this year. Unless you figure on a big drop-off for some reason, a repeat of his 2015 next year is better than Luck has ever produced.

Palmer's 2015 wasn't a flash in the pan given his 6 starts (all wins) in 2014, and his historical quality in 2005-2006 before he declined. Not many people with a season like his 2015 weren't a top-5 QB the next season. I don't give the same level of credibility to Dalton's future performance, for sure.

I do think you'd have to take Rodgers over Luck for 2016, and probably at least 5-6 years beyond. Push the reset button on GB's injuries for next year and they're an instant contender again, McCarthy or no. Brees, even just for 2016? I'd have to say no, especially at that cap hit. So maybe that means I'd put Luck 6th after Brady, Newton, Wilson, Palmer and Rodgers, but he's certainly no slouch once healthy.

Palmer was amazing this year but it'll be hard to repeat heading into his age 37 season. I would take Luck over him for the next year but it's close.

Luck will also be coming off of injury next year.
Palmer was coming off an injury in 2014. That didn't seem to hamper him much.

Luck will have a full year of rest and prep. Tom Brady came back from an injury in 2008 and put up 3 monster seasons. It's not unprecedented that a QB gets injured and comes back strong the year after.

If luck said anything vaguely interpretable as "Grigson and Pagano are the guys I want to shape my legacy," he deserves everything he gets over the next ringless, injury-plagued ten years.
Agreed. But the only two ways one could end up here (I think) are Luck making clear he wants continuity, or Irsay being back on pills.

What an unexpected development...

Looking forward to Luck's 20 year / $400M contract extension. What a garbage franchise. I love it.

“@JasonLaCanfora: Chuck Pagano has agreed to a 4-year contract as part of the talks with Jim Irsay today. Empowered indeed and well deserved”

This makes no sense on every level. Grigson is a horrible GM in his own right. His relationship with Pagano is apparently toxic. And even if nutty Irsay decided to keep both and try to make it work, why would Pagano want to stay?

“@ProFootballTalk: Jim Irsay says that Ryan Grigson is ”contractually tied“ to Chuck Pagano going forward. Suggests Grigson has gotten a three-year extension.”

Probably because no one else is going to give him a head coaching gig right now.

“@MikeGarafolo: Irsay said Grigson and Pagano are ”contractually tied.“ Implied a contract extension for Grigson. Source confirms that is the case.”

“@JasonLaCanfora: Pagano’s contract was up. He gets four new years. Ryan Grigson had one year remaining (his option was executed). He gets 3 new years”

In four years of Chuck Pagano's program, the Colts have gone 41-23 and reached the playoffs three times. They were 8-8 this season with a QB carousel. Multiple teams would have lined up to hire Pagano had the Colts not given him a contract extension tonight. It's deserved. Hopefully the drama in Indianapolis can end.

Does that record include the games Arians coached?

I love this: 20-4 in the last 4 years against a division who went a combined 60-128. They were 21-22 against everyone else and this is all with a top 5 QB. This is not deserved and he is not a good coach.

21-19 (using Seifert's numbers) but your point isn't wrong

Andrew Luck is 3-13 on the road against winning teams.

Ahhh, math. Math.
The thing is, Houston is already a better team and if Jacksonville keeps improving, even the divisional dominance is going to go away.

But really, how long until one of the Irsay-Grigson-Pagano Bermuda Triangle implodes?

The only weird thing about this is that it's not going down in Cleveland

Doyel, this morning:

After this game was over, players were telling me that Grigson was silent in the happy locker room. They don’t like Grigson, don’t trust him as far as they can throw him – a former offensive lineman, Grigson weighs close to 300 pounds – and tell me he walks around “like he invented the game.” In the blame game of Grigson vs. Pagano, that locker room is as united as this city: Blame Grigson.

Sure, but Pagano is no innocent victim. His teams have a history of entering games, even seasons, unprepared. And in the past two years the Colts have suffered a string of ugly blowouts. Unprepared at the start of games, unwilling to fight at the end of too many of them? That’s a bad combination, and it has marked the past two years for the Colts.
