SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse University men's lacrosse player was suspended indefinitely one day after he was arrested and sent to jail, officials said.
Hayes McGinley, 20, was arrested about 11 p.m. March 14 in the 100 block Marshall St., Syracuse, city police Lt. Eric Carr said in a news release. McGinley was accused of punching a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in the face, the release said. The woman had a bloody lip; the man did not complain of any injury, police said.
Here's what police say happened:
McGinley tried to get into the woman's vehicle, but the 29-year-old man tried to stop him and get him away from the woman's vehicle. McGinley then punched the man in the face. The woman then got into an argument with McGinley. McGinley pushed the woman; the woman punched McGinley in the face and McGinley then punched her in the face. The woman was not charged, Carr said.
McGinley was charged with two counts of second-degree harassment, a violation. He was then sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center because he was intoxicated, Carr said. McGinley was arraigned the following day. McGinley is no longer in jail, records show.
McGinley, a redshirt freshman midfielder from Bentleyville, Ohio, was indefinitely suspended March 15 from the SU men's lacrosse team for a violation of team rules. He had played in games this season.

"Our program and the athletic department have strict rules and expectations for the behavior of our student-athletes," head coach John Desko said in a prepared statement. "He did not meet those expectations."

a bit odd to open a thread titled, "2015 College Lacrosse" with an article on the suspension of a third string midfielder at Syracuse.

Anyway, I watched the Syracuse/Hopkins and Syracuse/Duke games.  Syracuse has definitely solved their problems at the faceoff X.  Ben Williams has been dominant there so far this season.  He won 10 of the first 11 face offs against Duke.

Also, Myles Jones is an absolute beast.  I know he didn't score yesterday, but I don't think I've even seen a player like him.  He's 6'4" 240 and just a wrecking ball on the attack, bowling through double and even triple teams.

Looking forward to the Syracuse @ Notre Dame game on Saturday.

Where it rains. No, seriously.
Great faceoff guys are so incredibly valuable. Williams doesn't even use his wingmen, just takes it himself.

I'm surprised with how bad some teams' D is. You have a roster of 50 and can't find a handful of poles.

This Cuse-ND game is nuts.

You ain't kidding. P.J. Finley scores off the face-off with under a minute to play to tie it 12-12 -- and not a single Orange player impeded his path. He made a vertical sprint from the circle and buried it.

Then Notre Dame just misses on the cross-crease connection to Cavanaugh, who was wide open for the potential game-winner with seconds remaining.

Man, ND missed AGAIN on the doorstep. Golden opportunity there for Perkovic after a great left-to-right move.

Holy shit, Doss just stonewalled Donahue point blank off the rear-net feed, who was bidding for his 8th goal of the game. He was WIDE open, and ND just let him set up shop left of the net to take the feed from Galasso.

On to double OT.

Jack Near wins it for the Irish after a controversial change-of-possession call at the other end that gave ND the ball back. It looked like Rice was closer when it went out of bounds, and should have stayed with the Orange.

Regardless, Near came around from behind the left side of the Cuse net and tucked it inside the left post.

Hopkins had a 6-3 lead, but Rutgers with 4 straight to grab a 7-6 lead after three quarters. The Blue Jays haven't scored in 20+ minutes.

JHU has lost 17 straight when trailing after three quarters, but it won't get to 18. Three straight goals makes it 9-7Jays with 1:25 left. The last one by Stanwick came after an enormous save by Schneider at the other end that kept Rutgers from tying it up.

Crap.  Want some revenge in the NCAA tournament.
That was a great game.  Syracuse got hosed on that last shot they had backed up, only to have the ref award it to ND.  At the same time, Syracuse caught a break earlier on a possession call that went against ND.  Hard to get too bent out of shape.  Man, Syracuse owned the faceoff X all game.  Of all times to let ND win a clean draw and run it down their throats for a goal...

Despite the loss, I come away encouraged as a Syracuse fan.  Syracuse played an uncharacteristically sloppy game in the first half with several unforced turnovers (not to mention that inexplicable pass on a failed clear right into a ND double team that led to an easy goal in the 3rd Q).  The ND goalie made some great stops in the first half and the aforementioned one in the first OT.  Hopefully Staats comes back soon, and on a neutral field with that level of face off dominance, I like their chances.

I'm afraid the 10-9 loss to OSU will be a harbinger for the 4 remaining games for the Nittany Lions.  Once again they are plagued by almost no scoring from their midfielders.    With the loss to graduation of 3rd Team AA Austin Kaut in goal, a 3-6 record, and losses to Loyola, Villanova, UMass-Amherst, Harvard, Denver and Ohio State to date, their #15 pre-season ranking is disappearing rather quickly in the rear view mirror.

Syracuse beats Duke to win the ACC tournament and, likely, have the inside track to the number 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament.

The Automatic Qualifiers are :
Albany (American East), Bryant (NEC), Colgate (Patriot), Denver (Big East), High Point (Southern), Johns Hopkins (Big Ten), Marist (MAAC), Syracuse (ACC), Towson (CAA), and Yale (Ivy)

The following teams are locks to get at large bids:
Notre Dame (ACC), North Carolina (ACC), Duke (ACC), Virginia (ACC)

I think the following teams are safely in at this point based on their resumes:
Maryland (Big Ten), Cornell (Ivy),

18 teams make the tournament this year with all the new auto qualifiers. That leaves 2 spots left. The final spots come down to the following teams:

Ohio State
Brown
Princeton
Georgetown

For more info on the stats that matter to the NCAA selection committee go here to LaxPower

I think with another loss Princeton is out. Top 20 wins carry more weight Georgetown has only beaten Marquette (who is ranked 20th) while Ohio State has wins over Hopkins, Maryland, and Denver and Brown has defeated Princeton, Cornell, and Yale. Therefore I think Georgetown is on the outside looking in and the final spots will go to Ohio State and Brown.

Bracket Predictions:

1 Syracuse vs. (Bryant @ Marist)
2 UNC vs. (High Point @ Towson)   ND deserves to be 2 but the NCAA will save money with flights this way
3 ND vs.Ohio State
4.Denver vs. Brown (flight)
5.Duke vs. Colgate
6.Virginia vs. Cornell
7. Yale vs. Hopkins
8. Albany vs. Maryland

1,2,7,8 play in Annapolis
3,4,5,6 play in Denver

Here are your brackets all games televised on ESPNU:

Sat. May 9 12:00 PM   Albany at Cornell (8)
Sat. May 9 2:30 PM    Yale at Maryland (6)
Sat. May 9 5:00 PM    Towson/High Point* at Notre Dame (1)
Sat. May 9 7:30 PM    Ohio State at Duke (5)
Sun. May 10 1:00 PM Johns Hopkins at Virginia (7)
Sun. May 10 3:00 PM Brown at Denver (4)
Sun. May 10 5:15 PM Colgate at UNC (3)
Sun. May 10 7:30 PM Marist/Bryant* Syracuse (2)

The committee's concern ($$$) over too many flights seems to have suddenly disappeared this year, which is a good thing for the sport. That way the rankings and brackets are based on the actual results and not just how to save the most or make the most money. Having said that I think Syracuse should be ranked ahead of ND, Maryland and Cornell are ranked too high, and that Albany deserved a home game this year. Looking forward to the weekend. I think Hopkins, Yale, and Albany have very good chances of pulling off "upsets."

5 of the top 7 seeds are from the ACC (ND, Syr, UNC, Duke, Virginia).  I know not everyone plays lacrosse but man.

And on top of that Maryland was an ACC member and there was significant talk of Hopkins joining the ACC as lacrosse member only instead of the Big Ten. I think there is a good chance for an all ACC final four weekend this year with ND, Cuse, UNC, and Duke, but Duke will have a tough time beating Denver in Denver. I'll predict:

Towson and Bryant in the play in games

Albany
Yale
ND
Duke
Hopkins
Denver
UNC
Cuse

Denver
UNC

You know what?  I first typed in 6 of the top 7 seeds were from the ACC, and then I remembered that Maryland isn't in the conference anymore!

I know their move to the ACC helped precipitate the breakup of the old Big East, but goodness, being in the ACC is VERY good for Syracuse in pretty much every way imaginable.  It's still taking time for me to get used to it, but it's a very good thing for them to be in this conference.

I was at Hopkins - Virginia and it was likely a top-5 regular season game this year. Can't wait to see it again. I got a chance to produce 11 lax games for ESPN this year and really fell in love with the sport.

Nope. I had two at Princeton this season but they've moved me to baseball/softball now. Ivy was fun/crazy this season.

Gotcha, I work at Brown and have seen most games this year, pleasantly shocked they snuck in over Princeton. Every Ivy game was a complete toss up this year.  I enjoyed the duo of McAnaney and Boyle working the tourney, they were pretty solid in the booth.

I was at Brown - Princeton. Brown was a blast to prep for and cover. I love coaches that take chances philosophically. Ryan Boyle was a joy to work with.

Quint was a nice guy, definitely particular and a perfectionist but that normally brings out the best in you as a producer. His willingness to be harsh to Hopkins is something I really respect.

Crazy finish in the second semi as Maryland's all-American goalie stops Hopkins with the butt-end of the stick in the closing seconds to hold a one-goal lead, seconds after a point blank shot appeared to tie it up.

Maryland - Denver on Monday.

Here's an interesting story about the UD approach, which incorporates box lacrosse strategies and a wide recruiting net:

http://laxmagazine.com/college_men/DI/2014-15/news/052515_denver_ncaa_lacrosse_title_validates_new_wave_thinking

I moved to SoCal 8 years ago (was previously a lifelong resident of the states where the champs players used to come from) I can see the increase in participation and skill out here in a short time.  Denver won't be the last champion from out here, I'm sure.
