I'm with Wade, I just don't see how it makes a lot of sense with the free agents / cap casualties that are out there already.

McCoy has a $10 million cap hit this year, 7.1 next year and 7.8 the year after.

I'd rather have Bush/Spiller/Vereen (3-4 million cap hit most likely) + Alonso + $6 mill in cap space than McCoy.

BTW, can you flesh this out for me? Seriously can't see the logic of this at all from the Bill's POV - why would you trade one of the best coverage LB in the league when you have to face Brady and Gronk twice a year - particularly for a RB, where there's going to be a lot of cap casualties and even more particularly when that LB is on his rookie deal (which gets extended for one year because of the injury)?

Speculation from the media in the Buffalo area (I live in Rochester, NY) is that Rex Ryan wants the offense to run the ball more than it throws the ball -- much more.  "He wants to win with ball-control and defense" is on every sports-writer's lips.  Spiller hasn't shown that he can run effectively inside the tackles, so this move was Ryan's attempt to bring onto the team a running back who can (and who can also run outside, and catch passes out of the backfield as well).

Media are saying that the Bills will need a heavy-duty, all-purpose RB, and this was a way to get one.

McCoy is an inefficient RB on a down to down basis, so I don't see how the acquisition advances Buffalo's goal of being a run-heavy, ball control team.

He's more Spiller than, to use a former Rex favorite, Thomas Jones.

If that's the plan, then McCoy will be lucky to last eight games this season. The Bills will still need a second running back, and possibly a third.

I don't think that Cassel has made $70MM in his career. His first4 years with the Pats were on his rookie deal, so he probably made about $2MM with them. His Chiefs deal was 6 years $63MM, which would have taken him through the end of the 2014 season, so even if he played that full deal out he would still be a bit under. But he didn't play the last two years under that deal, and made less money with the Vikings. The general point still stands though-he has made a mind-boggling amount of money in his career despite never being a top-tier guy.

With his new deal with the Bills I do think that he has signed contracts well in excess of $70MM in the aggregate, which may be what Rovell was trying to say.

Are we including his time at U$C?

Hoo-hoo-hoo hoosier land.
This is insane. He'll turn 27 before the season begins and he's had more than 600 carries over the past two seasons. And even if he stays heathy, it's a terrible use of resources considering the relative fungibility of the position. Why not upgrade the o-line, sign a veteran RB, and draft a guy?

Do the bills even have a capologist or is Rex making all of the decisions? Someone should take bets on how much dead $ is going to come out of this.

Here
Wait, so does "first year total" mean cap hit or something like salary plus bonus cash this year? Huge difference.

Is 5/40 really that unexpected? It will probably look a lot like the Arian Foster deal. Maybe like $10 million cap hit in years 1-3 and $5 million in dead money in each of years 4-5 if they need to cut him.

Edit: oh, I have it backwards. Boy, that's back loaded.

The issue is they don't have a No. 1 pick, they have Cassell at QB and just spent a significant amount on a RB. They traded a decent linebacker with, apparently, a preconceived notion that they would be grabbing Rex's defensive QB in free agency (which didn't work).

The McCoy contract, in and of itself, can be defended. But in context of their offseason, it seems obsessive

they are going to sign charles clay to play TE, too. Probably the best skill players in the division. With no QB. and Rex. I'm confused

George Costanza must be the Bill's Capologist.. look for them to have wool uniforms next season.
I think you mean cotton. Cotton breathes, you see, it's much softer. Imagine playing games and your team is five degrees cooler than the other team. Don't you think that would be an advantage? They're cooler, they're more comfortable, they're happier, they're gonna play better.

LeSean McCoy and Bills have agreed on a $16M first year total with $26.5M total guaranteed and $40M over 5 years, per @RosenhausSports
Interesting that Rosenhaus (pl) are reporting that there is $26.5M of guaranteed money. I can't figure out how it adds up. Here are the contract details: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/08/bills-break-the-bank-for-mccoy/

Basically, everyone agrees that $18.25M is fully guaranteed at signing ($13.00M signing bonus + $2.625 salary for 2015 + $2.5M of 2016 salary (out of $4.8M) + 250K workout bonus for each year.)

PFT says on first day of league year, rest of 2016 salary plus workout bonus is guaranteed, which is a total of $4.8M + 250K. But $2.5M of 2016 as already guaranteed. So I'm not sure how the guaranteed money gets to $26.55M unless the 2017 salary becomes guaranteed at some point (possibly if he is on the roster for the first league day of 2017).

All in all, seems like way over-market for a RB these days.

Rex the Franchise Wrecker?

Given what happened with the Jets, not sure if it's the wisest to let him drive the roster decisions.

@RapSheet: The #Bills will pay WR Percy Harvin roughly $6M on a one-year contract, source says

(I actually think the pats could be a WC team or even miss the playoffs in 2015, but it is fun to clown on the wide open comment)
