No way he's going to be available, so it doesn't matter.  He's going to be the cornerstone of that team for a long time.
I just dream of a world where we have a first baseman with a pulse.

Leading the best team in the league in a bunch of offensive categories.  That makes him a candidate.
So leading a meh offense categories such as AVG and RBI put him in contention with Harper, Goldschmidt, Stanton, etc?

What would we give for Gerrit Cole?

While we're being stupid.

The sad fact is that outside of Bogaerts and Betts, the Sox should be willing to trade any of their prospects/young players for realized potential like Cole.  Not all of them of course but if you had to trade three of their best prospects for Cole, you do it.

Only change I'd make is maybe adding Swihart to that group. Since who knows what Vasquez will be going forward.

Well yeah.  Since when is the MVP given to the advanced metrics leaders, regardless of how the team does?

If you lead a playoff team in your "meh" categories--and I don't consider OPS a meh category, fwiw--you're a candidate.  I'm not arguing the merits, simply that HR wasn't wrong.

Fair enough.  Swihart plays a thin position so maybe he is a bit more dear.  That said, if he was the one the Pirates asked for in addition to some other prospects, I still consider it.  Cole has less than two years service time and is under team control for four more years.  He is a Boras client but you don't have to deal with Scott and his bound books for a long-time.

Alright, let's examine the traditional categories then. Among Harper, Goldy, Stanton and Peralta...

AVG: Peralta is 3rd
R: Peralta is last
RBI: Peralta is last
HR: Peralta is last
SB: Peralta is last
Even if we stretch it to OPS Peralta is last.

And it's not relatively close in most of these categories. I suppose you could go with the warm body at shortstop argument or the intangibles argument. But as far as the playoff argument goes, Harper could miss 50 or so games and still beat out Peralta.

And Dante Bichette would beat Barry Larkin.  You're missing my point, but I really don't give a shit.

If Swihart is the one that holds up the deal, I agree, you think long and hard about it. But everyone else (and probably any combination) should be on the table from the start.

Anyways, apologies for the pipe dreams. Hard not to watch this game, see all the talent, and wish the Sox had more of it.

I've tried sabermetrics, traditional stats (per your suggestion), positional adjustments, intangibles and the playoff argument and one of them seem to put Perelta anywhere near Harper. Care to spell it out for me?

Oh Traut said it earlier.  Its amazing how many supremely talented young players are out there.   Harper, Trout, Stanton, Cole, Machado, Rizzo, Pederson, Bryant, Correa and the list goes on.  All beastly.

This is a game thread. We're trying to watch a game in here. A game thread is no place for fruitless arguments or ITG competitions.

Wait till Roger announces his ruling to nominate Brady for Sainthood during the seventh inning stretch.  What are you going to say then?  Huh?

I agree with FlowerCity, Peralta doesn't have a legitimate chance at MVP compared to the other candidates.

Why do they no longer alternate AL and NL parks for the game?

Selig started "awarding" the game to those putting in "bids" and favoring the newly built parks.

Except for San Francisco. He held out forever against giving the ASG to SF because the Giants went against Selig's wishes and didn't soak the city for the entire bill.

Harold Reynolds has forgotten more about harrassment and clutch baseball than you and FlowerCity will ever know.

And that's not even mentioning the guy taking the hill now. Or McCutchen.

I know they're already very good players, but I really really want to see Bogaerts and Betts explode and become as studly as these guys.

All I said was that he would be a candidate, not unlike Anthony Rendon who finished 5th last year.  I never said he would beat Harper.

If you set the bar at a 3rd place vote, I suppose anyone could be a candidate considering the state of the BBWAA and the web sites they're giving their votes to.
