The defender that was bodying up Firmino was still half on the pitch, keeping him onside.
FYI. Don't think it matters whether he was past the goal line. You remain an "opponent" so long as you're on the defendaning team, and you're deemed to be, for purposes of the offside rule, on the touchline (or goalline) if you crossed it leaving the field, so long as you are eligible to come back on the field without permission of the ref.

Edit: A good way to think about it is that you can't step or jump out of bounds in order to put your opponent in an offside position.

Correct, but I've seen refs miss it when they are completely off, especially if a player on each team went off. With him sitting right on the end line in full view of the linesman, there was no way they call Lallana offside.

The crazy thing is Sevilla going for 3 straight Europa titles. That would be a great achievement regardless, but it's even more unlikely now with the new rules. Since the winner qualifies for the Champions League, that means for 2 straight years Sevilla have played in the CL group stages, finished 3rd, then made it to the EL Final.

Last year was the first year EL winner received auto CL. Sevilla was straight EL previous two wins.

Ah, thanks for the correction. I thought 2 years ago was the first time.

Still funny that Sevilla managed to come in 3rd in their CL group to give them a chance for the 3peat.

I wonder how this breaks down for prize money. In other words, I know that for qualifying and advancing in each round of the UCL, the club's prize money (i.e. share) goes up. Assuming it's the same for Europa (EL), Sevilla should be getting group stage UCL $ and EL finals money. Does that come out to more than Barca or PSG for example, who were both bounced in the QF of UCL? This could all be moot if all UCL and EL monies are combined, and then distributed on a single system. I guess I just don't know and wonder what the financial repercussions are for Sevilla's path this year and how that compares to other results.

So nobody's posted anything about the final yet...here we go!

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Toure, Lovren, Moreno, Can, Milner, Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge.
Sevilla XI: Soria; Mariano, Rami, Carrico, Escudero; Krychowiak, N'Zonzi; Coke, Banega, Vitolo; Gameiro.

The nerves are just kicking in now, a cold beer is by my side and looking at the pictures from the stadium it may feel like an away game for Sevilla.

Why is this game today, on a Wednesday, while I have to wait another 10 days for the Champions League final?

My guess: Last weekend was reserved for last league matches and upcoming weekend is reserved for the cup finals in each country. And I guess every country has more interest in setting the cup finals on a weekend, instead of the Europa League final, as there´s only two teams playing. I don´t know if it could be set up on a weekend, if Sevilla wouldn´t play on 22/05 in the Copa del Rey final vs. Barca.
(Last year´s final was also on a Wednesday.)

Until pretty recently the Champions League Final was played on a Wednesday. Next Wednesday is actually the 11th anniversary of the Liverpool-Milan final in Istanbul.

Sturridge had to bring in the cross here (´24), chip it in front of the goal, instead of shooting it with the keeper closing in and a bad angle.

Thanks for the responses. It feels a bit like the NCAA football championship bowl games with nearly three weeks off for the finalist teams.

Beautiful goal - perfectly placed between the post and the keepers fingertips.
With the lead and the fans now singing like it´s a Liverpool home game at Anfield, i could see an easy win for Kloppo´s boys. Sevilla has a poor away game record (not a single away win in LaLiga this season: they went 0-9-10)

(Imagine if Gameiro´s bicycle kick a few minutes earlier had gone in..)

Spanish guys suck at English, so I always get a laugh out of them trying to tell an English player something.

There is nothing worse than being behind to a Spanish team late and having to watch every bump take 5 minutes to recover from.

Sorry, Liverpool fans. Tough loss.

So that means no Europe for Chelsea and Liverpool next year? They should be rested and prepared for the league, to look on the positive side.

So...that didn't go as I hoped. Time to congratulate the victors, look forwards and hope changes are made to improve the team.

By the way, Kolo was outstanding.

How many Spanish teams are qualified for the UCL group stage (5, 4, or 3)? Do Sevilla or Villareal automatically qualify for group stage? Also, does a 3rd Spanish team (Malaga) get to join Europa as a result?

Five Spanish teams qualify for UCL: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico, Villarreal, and Sevilla. The first three go directly into the group stage. Villarreal needs to qualify for the group stage through one play-in round. As for Sevilla, the winner of the Europa Championship goes directly into the group stage.

Good question about Malaga. Normally the winner of the Copa del Rey gets a spot in Europe, but Barcelona and Sevilla have already qualified, so I suppose it is possible that another spot opens up for Malaga in Europe.
