Well after 2 periods it is 2-1 Canada. Canada took a 2-0 lead when Mantha scored on a penalty shot and then the Swiss scored a disputed goal with 1 second left in the period. Knocked into the net with a high stick, it was ruled a goal by the referee and replays were inconclusive so if the official had ruled the other way it would have been no goal. Tough one.

Ugh, that Grzelcyk ending was brutal. USA didn't play their best. Gillies could have done better on the first two goals, but there was nothing he could do about the 5-on-3 blasts.

By the way, could anyone tell who the American was who clipped the Russian at the end? Poor display of sportsmanship in response to a poor display of sportsmanship.

Amerikaners! (of which I'm a naturalized member)
Who do you root for now?
Do you pack it in, watch no more hockey, and focus on who Tom Brady plays next?
Or do you pick a B team?
Sweden, the kind, slightly bland hosts with the mannish, bouquet-bearing girls in traditional garb?
Canada, your insignificant continental partner, whom you are likely reminded of only when witnessing your own shortcomings?
Finland, the little-known Scandinavian mavericks who kindly knelt before your coronation at Lake Placid?
Or Russia? Oh wait, that's entirely out of the question.

So, now that I've spelled it out, anyone still paying attention who isn't rooting hard for the Finns?

Sweden. (Go Burakovsky!) Definitely Sweden. I'm a big Wennberg fan, too. And I wish I was still a Forsberg fan. :( If not the Swedes, the Finns. I hope Canada and Russia are playing for another third place consolation medal just like last year.

If it ends up being Canada-Sweden, I fear for the McDavid-Dansk storyline being a little too prominent.

I suspect you might be backing a winner.

I vote for the Finns.  Should cut down on the number of suicides in Helsinki this winter if they win.

Funny that there isn't much love for Canada here yet the Bruins, this sites favourite team, are one of the teams with the highest number of Canadians in the league. ( 62%) Many of you should be Pittsburgh fans(most Americans 37%) or Buffalo fans. ( fewest Canadians 27%)

There are zero Bruins prospects on Team Canada though. And obviously, given that they're Canadians, none of the team is from New England. And they all play in the CHL. Bruins fans supporting Canada would have made a lot more sense last year with Hamilton, Subban, and Camara on the team then.

In contrast, the US team features a ton of players with Boston area connections. Grzelcyk is a Boston pick (and BU player). Gillies plays at Providence. Santini, McCoshen, and Demko are at BC. Eichel is a Massachusetts native and BU commit, and O'Regan is already at BU.

Furious third period action between Russia and Sweden. Russia PP with :19 left.
And it's over. Sweden wins.
No, wait! A huge brawl ensues! Unbelievable!

Wow, Sweden lucky to win this one. They escaped getting a penalty after shooting the puck over the glass in the first but capitalized at the end of a 5 on 3 advantage after getting a similar penalty called in their favour. Great game !

Year after year, we two are the only ones for the True North. This year is my first WJC experience as a Canadian citizen!

BC! Nice. BTW, when is the best time to do Edmonton -> Jasper -> Lake Louise (maybe ski there for 1-2 days) -> Banff -> Revelstoke (ski for 2-3 days)?

Canada look very energetic so far. The crowd is really into it too.

Hard to say. Depends on the snow. We're a little light on the snowpack so far. Revie is reliable, but I'd like to ski it when it's colder to maximize it's huge vertical. Lake Louise is great, but prone to drought. Look at it this way, if it's clear, the scenery is gorgeous. If it's not,the skiing will likely be better.

Tight game, but that goal was essential for Canada.

Well Finland full deserving of this win. Thy completely stymied the Canadian offense.
Agreed. I had a feeling Canada was going to get found out; I just thought it would be in the final. Full credit to the 'Phins. They contested everything, and the TC players showed little skill. Ah well.
Go Finland!

Well Canada lost the Bronze Medal game, falling to the Russians 2-1.Matt Dumba scored the Russians first goal when a shot going wide deflected off his skate into his net. It was a hard fought close contest. Overall, in this tournament the Canadian team lacked offensive creativity with the exception of about two players. Connor McDavid certainly did not look like the next Great One. As a 16 year old, Wayne Gretzky led this tournament in scoring, McDavid as 16 yr old was basically invisible but most of the 18 and 19 yr olds play was disappointing as well.

Great ending to a terrific game, and to yet another exciting tournament.

Less than 51 weeks before it all happens again!

(Next year's Group A looks a lot like this year's:  Finland, Canada, U.S., Slovakia, and Germany.  Only one change.)

Finland switches with the Czechs to make Group A a touch more difficult (And Denmark replaces Norway in Group B due to relegation.)

Good for the Finns. I was rooting for Sweden, but Finland deserved that win. Fun game to watch.

What a goal by Ristolainen. That's some grit, knocking off Canada and then host Sweden for the gold, I love the Finns, they grind.
