It is US Open week!

The main storylines this week will once again surround Phil Mickelson and his quest to win a US Open and now complete the career grand slam. He's finished 2nd at the Open 6 times in his career, the first of which was at Pinehurst when he lost to Payne Stewart. Phil's yet to post a top 10 in 2014, but he's coming off his strongest finish of the season with a T11 at the St. Jude.

As for the field, Rory is listed as the "favorite" but I think the event is wide open. Some quick odds I saw:

Rory McIlroy- 10/1
Adam Scott- 12/1
Phil Mickelson- 14/1
Bubba Watson- 18/1
Henrik Stenson-25/1
Jordan Spieth- 25/1
Justin Rose- 25/1
Matt Kuchar- 25/1

I am taking my Dad to Saturday and Sunday. He was bummed about Tiger not playing, but is a big Phil fan. I would love to see Phil win it - - and then get arrested by the FBI on the 18th hole. :)

Phil Mickelson has zero chance of winning. I'd put money on that.

I had an open invitation to go to this with TFP and am very much regretting turning that down. Bad timing as it's sandwiched between two other vacations, but I should have made it work.

I played Pinehurst last fall and it's a top notch facility (Captain Obvious). Whoever is going, will not be disappointed.

Yep, you're going to miss out.

I'll be there for the week, heading down Wed night and out on Monday morning. Attending on Thursday and Sunday and then golfing in the area on Friday and Saturday. I can't really describe how much I am looking forward to the trip, I have never been to a PGA event and this will be pretty amazing way to experience that.

Watch out for Brendon Todd.  Dude can putt the lights out.  It's his first US Open appearance, so who knows how he'll play, but wouldn't be surprised to see him on the leaderboard on Sunday.

Also liking a rested and healthy Jason Day.  I think Spieth is the safest play to finish with a Top 20.

Brendon Todd and Paul Casey each at 100/1 seem like good bets.  Both have had very strong seasons.

I had a 4-some at Quail Hollow on Friday that I am not going to make if you want it. . . . .

I wouldn't bet on Jason Day, to be honest. I've heard the thumb injury he has is pretty nasty and may be chronic. There are a few members at my club that are also members at Muirfield who have talked to him and heard that the thumb may be a bigger problem.

Which sucks because he's one of my favorite players to watch.

Let's do this - I'll give you 3/1 odds on Mickelson and you give me 3/1 odds on Justin Rose. So if Mickelson wins, I'll send you a check for $60, if Rose wins you send me the check. If neither wins, we each donate $20 to the Jimmy Fund.

Deal?

Bah, that is sucky news to hear. But he actually looked okay at the Memorial. Hopefully he continues to work though it as I've got my fantasy season riding on him. Lets hope he's got some crack hand specialists on the case.

Sure, but he hasn't traditionally played that great there, with a best finish a T27. Maybe being close to home is a detriment for him. We'll see.

Damn, let me ask. Have foursomes already at Foxfire CC and Pinewild CC for Friday and Saturday. What's the time and cost at Quail Hollow?

My cousin-in-law actually set it up, so I'm not sure. We have a 4-some that is a shotgun start on Thursday at Talamore that was only $50 a head at 8am if you want that. . . . .

I posted in the other thread last week, but if folks are looking for a hometown rooting interest, my friend, Rob Oppenheim, qualified for the Open and will be playing this week.  He goes out at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning. Would be amazing if he found a way to make the cut.

Paul Casey is 36 years old and hasn't had a top 10 finish in this country since 2010. 100-1 seems generous. Todd's not a bad bet

I'm throwing a few bucks on half of my fantasy team - Ryan Palmer and Chris Kirk at 80-1 and 90-1.

Splitting hairs a little bit, no?  He's got an 11, 12, 13, 16, and 18 this year alone.  It's unquestionably his strongest season since at least 2011 (he was a stud in 2009 and 2010).

At 100-1, I don't hate the bet.

I'm in a golf pool with about 300 people and I currently sit in 6th place (pool began with the Masters).  I've been racking my brain over who to pick for this thing, but I can't seem to zero in on anyone.  Bubba seems like the play, but I'm tempted to save him for next week's Travelers, where he's a rock.

I rolled the dice and took Horschel in the US Open last year and it paid huge dividends.  I'm VERY tempted to do it again with Todd.  All his stats are there, putting, scrambling, (especially from the sand, which could be huge this week depending on how you feel about the native areas), and his current form is outstanding.

No idea who to roll with here.

The thing about the native areas at Pinehurst is that they aren't maintained, so no matter how much you think a guy is good at playing out of the sand or fairway bunkers all it takes is a few shitty lies in those and he loses a stroke or two.

I played #4 last year and hole 18 has a huge native sand patch that runs down the left side. I hit what I thought was a really good drive that ended up bounding into the left sandy area, when I got to my ball it was nestled in a 2-inch deep groove of sand that had formed from the wind. I couldn't even get a club on it and it ended up taking me three shots to get out of there.

Todd is a bit too untested. He's yet to play in an elite field event. This will be his first major start and he also hasn't played in a WGC. So who knows. He's playing well now, but the US Open is a lot different than the Byron Nelson, Crowne Plaza and other smallish events he's feasted on of late.

Bubba's a wild card. He's feast or famine. 4 career top 10's in 25 major starts, including the 2 wins at Augusta. This has been his best season of his career, and if he's driving the ball well, he's hard to beat. The problem is you never quite know what Bubba is going to show up on any given week. If he keeps it on the fairway, he's got a huge advantage. But if the driver is leaky then he could go off the rail quickly.

Quail Hollow is Friday, I said Thursday is out.

That said, unless it was a tee time before 7am I'm likely out for Friday as well.

My site has him at 80-1, along with Palmer and Senden. Palmer and Senden have 9 top 10s between them this year.  Kirk and Todd (90-1) have 8.

So no, I wouldn't call it splitting hairs that Casey doesn't have a single top 10 in four years.

I'd make a friendly wager on any of those four against Casey if you're interested.

Caught some of Phil's press conference today. Basically, same old Phil. Says the waste area'a are playable and thus he'll be aggressive and hit a lot of drivers. Apparently he's going back to the claw this week since he can't putt for shit.

I had to bag on Quail Hollow. My FIL is a member and he had set it up through the Pro who was letting us on as a favor since my FIL was not going to be in town.

On another note, I'm more than likely not going to make it down at all for this trip. We're going to have to eat the costs of the house we rented and most likely the golf on Thursday at Talamore. I do have 4 tickets to both Saturday and Sunday that MAY be available once I confirm we're not going.

And closes par-par to finish at +5. Currently T60 but that's meaningless.

He hit 10 of 14 fairways (71%, field average 73%) and is right on the field average for putts (1.71) but he's only 9 of 18 on greens (50%, field average is 60%). So it looks like it was his approach shots that hurt him a bit.

Still, +5 in your first open I would think is something to hang you hat on. If he can repeat his back 9 tomorrow and have a better front...
