Hill had an opt-out deadline today. He declined to opt out, presumably because the Sox told him they'd find a landing spot for him that would be mutually beneficial. He gets to join a big league roster and they get a nominal amount of cash. Seems win-win to me if the alternative is he walks away for nothing.
I didn't realize he had an opt-out deadline. That makes a little more sense.
If he didn't have an opt-out then I would think this says something about the team's plans re: Miller and Breslow but the opt-out clause and professional courtesy explanation clears that up.
I thought after the tragedy he and his wife experienced this spring maybe he'd want to stay closer to home. But, a big league paycheck for the last half season is probably worth the time away.
Sadly, Hill faced 4 batters, walked 3 of them and gave up a hit to the other. He also had a wild pitch, and of the 19 pitches he threw for the Angels, 5 went for strikes. Ouch. Hope he latches on elsewhere and is able to figure it out.
