I think Rose wins it.

Would be a very impressive run for him, having won the Quicken Loans National and Scottish in his last two outings.  Tough not to root for him though.

You may be looking at the practice day tee times. Guys will tee off by themselves, or even in foursomes, sometimes on practice days. Should be all threesomes on Thursday and Friday.

Tough to pick a favorite here. Rose is hot right now but historically hasn't played well at the British. His only too 10 was when he was 18. Stenson has been trending up the past few months, but he's never won a major. Rory has had flashes of brilliance this season, but then seems to follow that up by losing it for a stretch effectively knocks him out of contention. He can't seem to put together 4 consecutive solid rounds of golf. Tiger is obviously a mystery. Phil can't putt. Kaymer has obviously dominated this year, so he has to be in consideration.

Should be a fun week. Hoping for at least some drama on Sunday, the first two major's have been pretty uneventful.

Where it rains. No, seriously.
I don't love the chances of any of the Americans, but among them I think Fowler has a pretty good shot. Even though he isn't in great form, Hoylake feels like a place where Westwood might be able to get it done.

Love how early this gets going.

Favorable scoring conditions, lots of guys making birdies. But this is the best Tiger has looked in a long, long time. Swing looks solid, he's working the ball, and putts are dropping.

He bogeyed 14, but bounces back with birdies at 15 and 16 to get to -3. 18 is a par 5, so he'll have an opportunity to get in at 68.

Super easy round for Rory....let's see what he does for a follow up tomorrow because that's where he's struggled

Did I just see that right? Ernie just gave up on that short putt on 1  - missed it, tried to backhand it in, missed that, and tapped in for a 7... yikes. That's how I play golf.

It's anyone's guess as to what McIlroy does tomorrow. His Friday struggles are well documented for this season, plus in the 2010 Open at St. Andrews he shot an 80 on Friday after having the low round (63) on Thursday. So who knows.

And this was after hooking his tee shot left and nailing a fan.

Andy Brickley's potty mouth
I woke up early this morning to watch the live coverage. Tiger started out rough (missed the front nine), but from what I saw on the back he was lights out. Even when he made a bad swing (17) or got unlucky (18) he was able to recover nicely.

I was pretty impressed, but we've seen Tiger put together some great rounds in the majors over the last 4 years and then follow them up with stinkers. I will say, though, that something looked and felt different with him today. He his confidence seemed through the roof.

He hit someone in the gallery with his tee shot and injured them pretty badly I guess. I think he was rattled, to be honest.

For a moment I thought he had hockey sticked it on the backhand (dragged it rather than hitting once).  he just really does seem absolutely done as a player at this point.

I watched most of the back nine and he seems like he's in a good frame of mind. Maybe he's telling the truth about how good his back feels, maybe he just loves the layout, maybe hitting those knock down shots and keeping it low allows him to play with some controlled aggressiveness. Either way, two things seemed on today. He was shaping shots for the most part with good control and he was putting good.

Since he won't have to hit the driver much, it should be much easier to repeat his swing. The knockdown tee shot is more similar to how he hits fairway shots.

Tiger's front really wasn't too terrible either. He stumbled out of the gate, but settled in. 6/7 fairways hit and 7/9 greens on the front side. He wasn't knocking the approaches stiff, but was controlling the ball well and landing it where he wanted it. Zinger and Strange were both harping on Tiger's distance control and how he was leaving everything pin high.

Even his 'bad' start wasn't as bad as it looked. He got a shitty lie in the bunker on #1 and his only play was trying to get it on the back of the green and 2-putting and he just over-cooked his birdie putt on #2 and couldn't make the comebacker.

Well Rose didn't have the start I had hoped, finishing even on the day.

If somewhere near -14 to -18 wins this thing, which it very may, then Rose would need an epic weekend. I might need to revise my prediction.

That debacle at the 5th green seemed like some rust. I'm surprised he tried to putt that ball from that far off the green and he obviously didn't have the feel for the speed coming off the fringe whatsoever.

ESPN has actually done a pretty good job so far. They had Peter Alliss on for a bit this morning, which was awesome.

It also helps that there is no Chris Berman anywhere in sight. Also, have to overlook Zinger calling the Claret Jug the Wanamaker trophy constantly.

No Berman is the biggest difference, but I think ESPN is a lot better with Tirico in the lead chair over SVP. I can only take SVP in small doses.

The early/late group definately got the better end of the draw. They've gotten much more favorable conditions. Wind is pretty calm now.

DJ is making a charge, he's -5 through 11.

Well as good as Tiger looked yesterday, in control, confident, compact, in rhythm, etc... it was just the opposite today. Almost looked disinterested.

I think he's at a stage with this swing where its either there or it isn't, and when it isn't he's not capable of in course adjustments. I wonder how long he'll keep Foley around if he doesn't play better in majors. Now I know its his first of the year, but the contrast between yesterday and today was large and if he blames it on his swing leaving him, then the coach is feeling some of that heat.

I have no earthly idea why he even hit five drivers today.  He missed every fairway with them and hit every one with his 3-wood.
Yep - there was no need to take a driver on #1, especially after the bad start yesterday. He should have just come out and punched one down the fairway and made an easy par to get his round going.

My impression of Tiger today was that he was pressing too much trying to force a good round. If he had just played his game, like he did yesterday, he probably would have shot 68 or 69 again and been right in the mix.

Oh well, this is the new Tiger. He does not know how to handle being the guy in the middle of the pack trying to make a move. He presses too much and makes stupid mistakes. That's where he misses Stevie the most.

Tiger said he was trying to be aggressive today which is alarming considering he won 14 majors with pretty much the exact opposite approach.

Anyway, Rory and DJ should be a fun pairing tomorrow. Weather could be dicey too.

I was wondering about this today. I always thought an elite golfer, in response to a driving slump, would be able to dial it back (and as Freddy mentioned, choose a more [stable? forgiving?] club) and just work on splitting the fairway again. I realize they know a hell of a lot more than I do, but it seems like a player at Tiger's level could easily make up for any sacrificed yardage via better lies for second shots. I get "aggressive," but it seems like it is too often bordering on foolish.
