INSIDE THE HOUSE!
Someone had to do it.

I'm going to be in the LA area at the end of January/beginning of February for a conference/vacation and I want to play two or three rounds at courses that cost around or less than $100. I'm going to be in Manhattan Beach and Anaheim. I'm pretty sure I want to play one round at the Malibu Golf Club. Do any of you have any other recommendations for me?

I hate to brag while there is a snow storm, but I am spending a week in Curitba, Brazil. I have played three rounds a Club Curitbano. Tough course. I haven't broken 95. I will get one last round in tomorrow and then I fly back to DC.

I started out last year as a 10.9 and got it down to an 8.3.  I'm shooting to become a 6 or less this year and will try to play at least 45 holes per week as well as range time.

I am on a young member's membership at my club.  My dad has been a member here for a long time and I finally joined on my own membership last year.  The place means a lot to my family but I don't think I'll be able to afford it in 3 years when I'd need to pony up for a real membership.  As a result I'd really like to give myself a decent shot at the club championship.

This winter I'm starting to take fitness a bit more seriously.  I started going to a gym a month ago and work with a personal trainer once or twice per week.  I told him about my love of golf and how ideally I'd exercise and train to become a better golfer, not a musclehead.  We are still in the beginning of the training period but I basically have 4 months to see what I can do.

I'm getting married in May.  I'm playing one of the courses at Pebble Beach (right now Spanish Bay but I'm relatively confident of getting on Pebble as a single) and 2 or 3 times in Hawaii.

You're an 8.3 and gunning for the club championship in 3 years?  That's a hell of a goal.  Do you have a golf instructor as well as a trainer?  As I'm sure you're well aware, moving from an 8 to a 6 is about twice as hard as moving from an 11 to a 8.  Club champions are usually either scratch or better so you've got your work cut out for you.  What was the total for the current club champion at your club?

I'm not trying to be negative, I know you have to have goals but I'm curious what the plan is.  I went from about a 10 to a 0.8 but it took me playing a minimum of 36-72 holes a week for about 7 years and I still never sniffed the club championship (2 rounds in the high 60s did the trick).  That was in a place where the courses never closed so there was no off-season.  Going from 2 to 1 was extremely difficult and I never made it all the way to scratch.  I've since moved and rebounded back up to almost 4.  Shooting in the 60s constantly is really, really hard.

I'm well aware its a lofty goal, as well as how difficult it is to lower a handicap.  Our club champions are usually between 1-2 handicaps.  Format is 2 rounds of qualifying, low 16 qualify for match play.  I'm hoping in 3 years I can lower my handicap a few strokes.  Could a 4-6 handicap beat a 1-2 in match play?  Stanger things have happened.

Yeah I'm learning that lesson the hard way - I've been able to get myself down to a 4 at times, but am sticking around a 5-6. I practice and play a lot, breaking those last few handicap points is really fucking tough. I'm hoping to get down below a 4 this year.

If the club uses match play to crown their champion (as we do at our club) this is not necessarily true.  Match play can flatten out the distinctions between low handicaps, and while I'm not saying it's common, we've had winners who are a three or four handicap.

The "second major" at my club is the President's Cup, and this is a stroke play event.  The distinction between a scratch golfer and a 2 handicap over three days of tournament play is significant and it shows in the final results.  This is almost always won by a golfer playing at scratch or better.

I totally agree.  Match play changes everything but I'll also note that the difference between a 3 and a 6 is bigger than between a 0 and 3.  I generally range between 1 and 4 and have a lot of friends in the 6-8 range.  It's much more frequent that I can beat my 0-2 friends than my 6-8 friends can be me.

Either way, a 3 or 4 can win a match play at a smallish club.  It would be awesome to come from a 10 to club champ in 3 years.

Marriage adds 3 shots to your golf handicap. Mostly it's the guilt.

I'm heading to Phoenix tomorrow for 4 days and I plan on playing 2 rounds while there. One round will definitely be Lookout Mountain and the other most likely will be Greyhawk.  I'm looking forward.

I bought a set of Taylor Made MC forged TP 3-P in late September and haven't had all that much opportunity to play with them.  The opportunities I did play, it was pretty mixed because the shafts were to light/long. So, I just had them re-shafted from the S300's to the KBS 90's at 1/2 inch shorter so that the length and weight match my older set in weight and my fitting.

Gonna be nice getting out of the cold for a few days.

Anyone have any experience with The Broken Tee in Lakeville, MA?  http://www.thebrokentee.com/

Basically its 3 simulators with like 30 courses and a range on them.  You pay by the hour and can virtually play the course or hit balls.  I'm thinking of going once a week until March or so.

I have no illusions about it being really accurate around the greens, but I would like a place where I can swing freely and be able to see my projected ball flight.

I'm thinking about going this week, mid morning, if any soshers are interested.

Can you post your thoughts on this place after you go? I need to do some winter tune up.

You posted while I was there today actually.

It was basically what I thought it would be.  They have simulators with a few different surfaces that you can hit off of.  After you hit the range (which looks like any simulator in a golf store) they'll plug in a course and off you go.

You tee off, watch the ball land then the next shot quickly loads.  It will give you distance, if the hole is below or above your feet and by how much, and surface.  So it works on the honor system but basically you put the ball on the surface it says to and swing away.  I found the distances to be pretty accurate on most shots, but I don't think it lends it self to guys who take big divots (which I do).  It was fun, and most importantly I can let my golf muscles get a workout in while there is a blizzard going outside.  The rate on a weekday is $32 per hour, and they suggest one hour per person.  It seemed pretty dead on for time, as I finished right at the top of the hour.

Chipping is awful, putting takes some getting used to...but if you use it just to swing during the winter and realize its better then just hitting into a net, its enjoyable.

If anyone wants to go, let me know and I'll meet you there.  I had 81 on Torrey Pines today.

In the air over Savannah, on the way to Orlando for 5+ rounds. No Disney, no side trips, just golf, food, and taking some cash at the card table from my drunk partners. 9 of us headed down, playing Windemere, Metrowest, Celebration, Falcon's Nest, and I'll probably squeeze in Stoneybrook East before the rest get down here. Looking forward to the activity, first since the last round 12/8.

I'm going to be re-shafting my driver. I bought it off the rack at golfsmith 2 years ago. Went into the simulator, etc. with a few and settled on the Burner, it has an r flex shaft. Last year i went and got fitted for new irons at Joe & Leigh's. ended up with RocketBladez with the Rocketfule stiff flex. He was nice enough to let me take out my driver and swing a few. He immediately noticed that the flex is wrong and i should go to a stiff flex driver as well. That's what i'm doing later this winter

Haha I'm holding strong on equipment, it's my game and my swing that needs the overhaul.

Looking forward to getting back out there and taking some swings at some point, even though we are in the doldrums of winter. Also fortunately, my girlfriend's family has a house on Pinehurst so I will be heading down there for a weekend in March/April to get some rounds in at the member's rates and everything.

Oh yeah...I'll be down for the U.S. Open too. Score.

I'm going to bite the bullet and get a fool fitting on my irons and driver. I love the RBZ hybrids and fairway woods but it's time for me to get new irons.

Pinehurst is a great take, enjoy it. I played #5 several years ago as a graduation present from college and had a total blast. Great golf area, wish I could've played more of the courses and #2 especially.

I'm experimenting with hybrid equivalents for the 4 and 5 iron.   I have trouble with long irons, hit them like I'm holding a purse, but hit hybrids better.  Got the 4 late last year, and liked the result (truer distance, hit the ball high).  Got the 5 for XMAS.   Callaways, but older models so relatively cheap experiment ($100 a club or so).

I will undoubtedly get a new driver this year since it's a year that ends in a number.  I've hit my buddies 913 D2 and ended up with one in a set of rentals and I really love it.  I want to hit the D3 though.  I have a high swing speed and a descending strike so I put lots of spin on my drives.  If I keep the ball in play off the tee all summer I'll get to scratch I hope.

Edit:  Good call on the hybrids.  I may replace my 4 iron with a 5 hybrid.  If I'm hitting a 4 iron it's usually because I messed up the tee shot and am in the deep shit or I'm on a very long par 3.  In either case the forgiveness of a hybrid is probably in my favor.

Doug ... I added a 5 hybrid last year and it made a huge difference. In fact, I hit it too well. I ended up with a full club gap between my 5i and 6.

The house is on #4 or #5 I think, I can't remember. The trip down in March is to play the courses with her dad and relax and just play golf. I doubt we'll get on #2 that close to the open but damn I would love to try. Either way, there are plenty to play so can't argue either way. Then going down for the Open is actually just me and her plus any friends we want to invite, and I doubt we'll even be able to play anywhere that weekend. But it's going to be a blast either way.

Have you tried the SLDR?  It may be perfect for a guy like you.  The only reason I mention it is because I actually went on a simulator today to try out different drivers.  It sounds funny, but I was disappointed and relieved at the same time to see I was getting the best numbers with my Stage 2 RBZ.  I really wanted to like the SLDR, but I just couldn't.  I was hitting it fine enough, but my ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate was lower than the RBZ 2.  I averaged a 270 carry with my driver, rolling out to 283, with the SLDR I carried it 261 and rolled out to 279.

I've only hit the SLDR with a regular flex shaft.  I like it but obviously can't judge with that shaft.  I really want to go get fitted again for driver.  I've done it twice but haven't been really satisfied with either fitting.  There's a place here in Denver that's supposed to be great but I'm terrified that I'll end up fit for a $700 driver that I'l replace in 6 months because I can make any driver suck.  I'll still probably do it :)

Need some advice:

Currently, I'm working out 3 days a week (MWF).  I also get a lot of cardio in by playing soccer 5 days a week (weekends and Tues-Thurs).  Right now I've been hitting the golf simulator once a week, usually on a Tuesday.  It hasn't been an issue yet, but how do people feel about swinging with muscle fatigue?

For example, today we did shoulders.  I'm sure I'm going to feel it tomorrow.  Should I swing tomorrow, and work on my game while fatigued with the thought of improving my stamina on the course or should I take a break because of fear of developing bad habits?

Zomp - I workout a lot and play a lot of golf, usually what I do is try to get my workouts in right after I either play or practice, giving myself the proper time to rest and recover. Are you starting to workout for the first time or have you always worked out? Your body will eventually adjust to working out and you won't get as sore, but you will be tight and will need to warm-up/stretch well before swinging.

Also, make sure you're drinking a ton of water and putting the proper nutrients in your body to recover.

In my experience - it's not an issue swinging the next day when I'm sore, but make sure you warm up properly. It'll take a bit before you get fully loose and don't feel sore while swinging. Start with very small wedge shots and work your way up to full shots. The club will feel a lot lighter to you, so you need to keep reminding yourself to feel the weight of the club.

I just started working out this year.  I've always played soccer but that was the extent of my exercise besides golf.  Because of that, I started to see a PT and we started the first month with general exercises and weight lifting to give me a solid base.  Now we are entering the second part of the training which is muscle specific mixed in with a few exercises to help with golf.  For example today we focused on shoulders with regards to lifting, and then mixed in some TRX training and core workouts.  On Wednesday I will deadlift and work with resistance bands to get my hips firing faster.

I am definitely getting less sore week to week, but since I have soccer as well, rest days are few and far between right now.  I don't mind it because the season is still 2 months away up here but I don't think I've been 100% since I started.  The other day I went to a simulator and my swing speed was 102 or so.  Typically its 107, and I think the biggest reason was because of fatigue.

I went and did another fitting and wouldn't you know I ended up in a SLDR 430, just as you suspected.  SLDR 430 with Kaili 70 X-Flex.  It was pretty enlightening switching from shaft to shaft to shaft and seeing the dramatic differences in spin and launch angle.  Club speed was pretty much right on 112 for every club but the spin rate and side spin were so much lower on the SLDR than anything else that shots went straighter and flew better.  My best drive was a carry of 307 and rollout to 337.  Worst was a carry of 290 with a rollout to 322.

The price they wanted at the fitting place was crazy though.  $827 ($400 head, $410 shaft, $17 grip, build, etc.).  I ended up on Ebay with a brand new SLDR for $339 + $100 for the shaft used.  Should be here Wednesday.  I head to Vegas for a 3 day golf trip on Sunday.

I guess the hit on Taki Mak is that they are not very uniform in weight so they could throw off swingweights but I have a hard time thinking there's anyone on here good enough to notice the difference in even 5 grams from grip to grip.  I've never tried them, was just warned away from them for that reason.  I use New Decade Midsize and it's feels like I can barely hold a club with regular size grips anymore.  I love the New Decades.  They are the second best grip I've ever had for wet conditions (played and lived in PDX for 9 years so I know wet conditions).  The only better set I had were Iomic but they don't make a mid size and their oversize is for giants.

If you take the grips to a good club builder or do them yourself then you can get them blown on instead of glued on.  That way you can try a Midsize in an iron or wood for a few range trips.  If you hate just get it blown off and sell it on Ebay.

One more thing, if you're worried about your gloves getting torn up then I can't recommend highly enough getting a Hirzl glove.  They are made of Kangaroo leather, are super soft but last forever.  I usually tear the palm and thumb off a regular glove in 3-4 rounds.  A Hirzl Trust/Control glove will last me 30 rounds if not more.  They're expensive on Amazon but only $20 on Rock Bottom.

Another new decade fan here.

Anyone have any feedback on the Bridgestone B330 ball?  They are a lot cheaper than the Hex Black Tour and Lethal's I usually play.

Rock Bottom has a deal right now for some Hex Black Tour balls that say "Season Opener 2013" on them but they are 22.99 per dozen.  I'm trying to order as many as I can because what do I give a fuck what they say, but I keep getting an error message.  The lethal's are 36.99 and the B330 are 27.99.

I didn't find very much difference between the B330s and the Hex Black.  B330 are very good.  For me the Hex Chrome has been noticeably softer and more controllable than the Black.

You ever buy new balls off ebay?  I like the firmer feel of the Black instead of the chrome (don't need help spinning the ball) and there are some good deals there as well.  I've bought clubs and other things from ebay before with good success.  Always buy from someone with a lot of positive feedback, a high seller rating, etc...  Just didn't know if there was anything I should look out for.  Right now I can get 6 dozen Hex Black for $25 each or so on ebay and the seller rating is 57,000.  I think its safe...

I have, but only from people with other stores not on Ebay.  I think it's easy to make fake/refinished/used golf balls look real online in pics but once you get them in your hand it'll be pretty easy to tell if they're real.  Are they in commercial packaging or loose?

One more thing, if you're worried about your gloves getting torn up then I can't recommend highly enough getting a Hirzl glove.  They are made of Kangaroo leather, are super soft but last forever.  I usually tear the palm and thumb off a regular glove in 3-4 rounds.  A Hirzl Trust/Control glove will last me 30 rounds if not more.  They're expensive on Amazon but only $20 on Rock Bottom.
I have two Hirzl gloves and that I bought two years ago. They're great gloves.

Just wanted to also sing the praises of the Hirzl gloves.  Switched to them last year after going through yet another glove in a half dozen or so rounds, and I ended up finishing the season with it, which was probably another 35 rounds.  I'm not sure if the glove is all weather or not, but it is really good in the rain as well as compared to other normal gloves that aren't all weather.

The trust/control is their all weather gloves. They have others that are supposed to be softer but I fail to see the need for anything other than the trust/control glove.

IT has been a lousy, lousy winter.  I am usually willing to play in the cold, even on frozen ground, but this winter has been merciless.  Furthermore, I have not had the discipline to continue my indoor practicing or even go to the gym.  I am turning into a schlub.  Nonetheless, I have booked a trip to Florida for March that will include PGA Village, a day at Streamsong and two days in the Orlando area.  I will think of you all then.

I used a simulator for a while today testing out drivers.  I hit the SLDR 430 and 460, Jet Speed and my current RBZ. Like Zomp, I really wanted to like the SLDR and figured that is what I would buy but after taking a number of swings, the Jet Speed driver was the best one I hit today. Spin, launch angle and ball speed were all optimal on this driver.

Of course, the best shaft was the Kai'li 70 X-Flex.

So, I bought the driver without that shaft and am looking for a used version of the Kai'li 70. Jercra's found one for $100  and I think that is reasonable but I can't seem to find a used one on Ebay, Rockbottom, Amazon etc.

If anybody comes across one or has any recommendations of other similar shafts, let me know.
