Where it rains. No, seriously.
Figured it is time for a new thread.  Winners so far in the wraparound schedule are Jimmy Walker, Webb Simpson, Ryan Moore, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, and Harris English.

Seventh event of the year, Kapalua, kicks off Friday, small field of 30.  Get ready for the 450-yard drives.

INSIDE THE HOUSE!
I love this event. Not only does it bring the best golfers together on a really cool course (the downhill par 5 - 18? is one of the coolest holes ever), it's on in prime time. I don't care if it's the seventh event on the tour calendar. It still says "Happy NewYear" in the best way.

We're in for a treat tomorrow.  FInal round, 3-way tie for the lead (D Johnson, Spieth, Webb Simpson) with 5 more guys within 5 shots.  Giddy up.

As others said, there's something uplifting and warming about watching this tournament every year, despite the limited field.   Gorgeous in HD.

I'm going to Hawaii later this year, and am lobbying hard to get leave of family for a few hours to play this course.  It helped to have wife watch it on TV a bit.

INSIDE THE HOUSE!
The view off the 17th(?) tee is unbelievable. And it can be played! They have a weekend unlimited golf option for between $350 and $400 from April through early December. Someday boys ...

EDIT--I'm sure the tourney/network is thrilled with a Sunday without Tiger or Phil

That was a tasty 79 today,.   and that might have been the worst 7 hole stretch Tiger has thrown up since he was a teen  (9 over from holes 18 through 6)

Crowded leader board as we hit the back 9. Choi has posted -8, and then there are 17 players within 2 shots. It's really anyones tournament.

Yep he's in the clubhouse at 9. I bet Woodland ties him though.

Nevermind, just saw where Woodlands tee shot on 17 landed.

Bubba has a 1 shot lead with 6 holes to play out in the desert. Looking for his first W since the 2012 Masters.

Kevin Stadler lost the lead when he had to take an unplayable after his ball got suspended in a cactus. The cactus literally punctured the golf ball and it was just hanging there.

Stadler follows suit and splashes his 2nd shot. After taking his drop, Bubba came within inches of splashing down again. Anyone's tournament. Mahan and Matsuyama are in good position.

Edit: Heck of a par for Bubba. Stadler too.

I think the winner's in the clubhouse already.  DeLaet's -15 is going to stand up with the way Watson and Stadler are coming in.

Stadler is really fat. God knows how he's able to turn but it seems to be working for him. Bubba misses a short putt to tie and take it to a playoff. Stadler wins. He will eat many wings tonight.

What did Bubba do? Was it like his freak out a couple years ago down in Connecticut?
Not really. 5 footer to par for the tie, caddy read it as straight, ball broke left. As soon as it missed, he looked at the caddy and said "it went left" twice. Basically saying he hit it right, but the read was wrong.

Bubba was fortunate to be the position to tie in the first place. He butchered both of his first two shots on 18 and got a fortunate bounce off the spectator rope to be in position for that 5 footer.

Maybe this has been the case for a while, but he seems like he's becoming kind of a high-strung ninny. Right before his chip on 18 he made a production of getting people in his line of sight well past the green to move away, the sort of stuff folks get on Tiger about. Bitching about cameras in the gallery and such.

Andy Brickley's potty mouth
Bubba has always been that way. He actually used to be a lot worse; he would constantly throw fits around the course and lose his temper. He has worked on that over the last few years and I think it's the reason he's actually contending (and winning) more.

People just don't realize this because it was before he made a name for himself, but he's always had a reputation of being temperamental on the course.

I was flipping around at that point on Sunday and missed the putt.

Saw it on video a few times this morning on Morning Drive,  but only the one angle.   That putt sure looked like a dead push more than something that broke unexpectedly

Where it rains. No, seriously.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Scott Langley, who was a teenager when he teamed with Dana Quigley to win the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, will be playing with another high-profile partner on the Monterey Peninsula this week.

Langley is partnered with Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. Interestingly, one of the Broncos' biggest fans on the PGA TOUR, Kevin Stadler, who won the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Super Bowl Sunday, has drawn former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

Wisconsin's Jerry Kelly, on the other hand, gets to play with the heart and soul of his favorite team. The rabid Cheesehead gets to play with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who carries a 7 handicap.

Surprising no one, two-time champion Dustin Johnson will play with his soon-to-be father-in-law, Wayne Gretzky. The hockey great's handicap is 11.

In another family pairing, actor Oliver Hudson will play in the same foursome with his mother's long-time boyfriend Kurt Russell. Their partners, respectively, are Kyle Stanley and Tommy Gainey.

Other interesting celebrity pairings include the following (with handicaps in parentheses):
Davis Love III and surfer Kelly Slater (3)
Ricky Barnes and New England QB Tom Brady (8)
Will Claxton and comedian Ray Romano (17)
Trevor Immelman and Don Cheadle (13)
Kyle Stanley and actor Oliver Hudson (3)
John Mallinger and tennis star Andy Roddick (6)
Brendon Todd and Alex Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs (9)
Jason Bohn and actor Chris O'Donnell (8)
John Daly and musician Kid Rock (16)
James Driscoll and New England coach Bill Bellichick (14)
Andrew Svoboda and T-Bone Burnett (5)
Brendan Steele and Andy Garcia (9)
Brad Fritsch and comedian Gary Mule Deer (18)
Jim Furyk and singer Darius Rucker (9)
D.A. Points and former Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice (18)
Aaron Baddeley and Kenny G. (2)
Jeff Maggert and singer Clay Walker (9)
Greg Owen and San Francisco 49er Harris Barton (9)
J.J. Henry and Chris Berman (18)
Lucas Glover and comedian Tom Dreesen (8)
Chris Kirk and tennis star James Blake (9)
Matt Bettencourt and San Franscisco Giant Matt Cain (6)
Matt Jones and actor Eric Close (14)
Michael Thompson and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly (12)
Jordan Spieth and musician Jake Owen (4)
Kevin Chappell and Rascal Flatts' Joe Don Rooney (5)

What is the Pats-Ricky Barnes connection? Belichick played with him last year, and this year he draws Brady with Belichick in the group. Driscoll is a local guy, that makes some sense.

Edit: To answer my own question, Wikipedia tells me Barnes' father, Bruce Barnes, was a punter for the Patriots. So there you go.

Also, most of the handicaps for the celebs are bogus. There is no way Chris Berman is an 18. He might be a 28.

This is the time of year where I bring up how an 18-handicap Andy Garcia broke 80 at both Pebble and Poppy Hills in 1997, odds of which are estimated at 10,000-1.
Those odds don't take into account the "best ball" factor which lets him pick up and take bogey instead of holing out for a double or triple much of the time.

This was the recap of his round at Poppy:
Getting a stroke a hole, Garcia birdied the 10th for a net-eagle 3, and made net birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th. He birdied the 15th for net eagle and made net birdie at the 17th. For the day, he picked up on only one hole and shot about in the mid-70s, only the second time he's broken 80.

Garcia's handicap must have been a bit inflated, or he's seriously worked on his game over the years, because he's now a 9.  Sand bagger.  An 18 handicap shouldn't make two birdies and 4 pars in a nine hole stretch on a PGA level layout.

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am is really something. Kid Rock claims a 16 handicap yet just said he has never made a birdie. He must be the most consistent bogeymaker ever. Do they have a max handicap for this tournament, because I don't understand why he would claim a 16 otherwise.

I would bet if you held amateurs to strict rule enforcement most handicaps would go up a bit. Plus, a lot of amateurs carry a vanity handicap. More than are sandbagging, probably. It doesn't need to be intentional either. All of those three-foot gimmees via playing partners, little nudges, roll-overs, mulligans when the ball goes where you don't want to walk, etc. can add up. Playing the same course all the time can really deflate a handicap too, just through course knowledge.
