We'll start with the 32-team NIT, where the top four seeds are SMU, St. John's, Minnesota and Florida State. Semifinals and finals at Madison Square Garden.

Dates & times TBA. Teams with an asterisk received automatic bids for winning their conference's regular season while failing to qualify for the NCAA tournament. All games until the final four will be played at the higher seed with one exception, which is good news for BU. Surprised FGCU is an 8 seed.  Of course they aren't the team they were last year, but at 22-12 and with that name recognition, I'm surprised the NIT put them against FSU, where there's a very good chance they are one and done.

Did Maryland, Indiana, Marquette, Richmond and Boise State turn down bids to the CIT and CBI?  The NIT acting chairman said on ESPNU that those teams (perhaps along with 1 or 2 others whose names escape me) were the last teams cut (in part due to the high number of automatic bids this season - 13 out of 32).

Richmond indicated it would not play in the CIT/CBI.

Their RPI (147) is the lowest in that bracket, and 45 points lower than the 7th-best (Vermont 102).

How Siena makes a postseason tournament finishing under .500 is baffling.

Old Dominion did as well--although going from 5-25 to 16-17 with essentially the same roster isn't too shabby.

How many over .500 teams didn't get into one?

The way I understand how the CIT and CBI works is that you have to pay to get into it.  Some schools that are more deserving might not have wanted to get into it.  I heard that if you want to host a game it costs $35,000.

Yep...I know you pay to host the CBI, and I'd imagine the CIT as well.

For young teams it's a good thing to get more practice/play time.

Oh, I understand that, but they don't always use RPI for selecting/seeding teams.  I'm sure they could have figured out a way to get them an easier first round matchup if they wanted to.,

Schedule makers put up BU head to head v. Heat @ Celtics. Wednesday night at 7.  Outside of the Big 10-ACC Challenge, not often B1G teams come to New England.

And the 2014 postseason is officially underway, with Holy Cross leading at Brown, 42-31 at halftime of the CIT opener. The 2nd half should be starting momentarily.

EDIT - The Bears have battled back to within 68-65 of the Crusaders on a Leland King three, but there's only 5 secs left. Time out HC.

EDIT - Brown forces a turnover on the inbound and King gets another three off, but it's blocked by Malachi Alexander and Holy Cross hangs on for their 20th victory of the season.

That's crazy. I would think you would have a hard time recouping it, unless you managed to get a full house.

For a lot of schools it's not about recouping it.

Last year, University of hartford  paid to have a home game - they wanted the experience for their kids to play in a tourney.  This year, they said they would play in one of them as a visitor - needless to say, they were not invited/

CBI is $25,000 to host first round, $50,000 to host second, tourney pays airfare (22 tickets). You get 2500 folks in there at $10 a ticket for the first round, plus concessions and you're okay.

I've also heard that any team agreeing to host a first-round game becomes contractually obligated to host a 2nd-round game if chosen to do so, which prevents schools from banding together and holding organizers over a barrel by saying, "We won't host this next round unless you lower our fee".

Never mind the mid-majors. Tonight it's the sub-majors making noise.

#8 Robert Morris leading #1 St. John's 74-66 with 3:28 left. The Colonials led 49-27 at the break. It's on ESPNU.

#8 Florida Gulf Coast leading #1 Florida St 45-44 with 7:37 left. It's on ESPN2.

#8 High Point trails #1 Minnesota just 23-20 with 6:18 to play in the half.

Man, what a start to the NIT *that* could be.

St. John's is getting absolutely embarrassed on their home court by the same team that upset Kentucky last year. It's a 14-pt lead for RMU with 55 secs left.

#4 Georgetown putting #5 West Virginia away, 68-53 with 3:30 left. The Mountaineers have gone nearly 6 minutes without a field goal, and the Hoyas have outscored them 38-20 in the 2nd half after trailing 33-30 at the break.

The Seminoles are starting to assert themselves down low especially on the offensive glass as they've taken a 56-51 lead inside of 2:00.

EDIT - The Eagles had forced a turnover down 3 with 25 secs left and they could have had a chance to tie, but they ended up losing the ball and giving it right back after a frenzied 5-sec scramble. The Noles hit a pair at the line and hang on for the 58-53 win.

The NIT upset train keeps a-chuggin' with #7 BU leading #7 Illinois 33-24 at halftime. The Terriers were up by as many as 17 with 5:24 left, getting only a John Papale three at the 1:02 mark the rest of the way. It's on ESPN2.

BU gave up the lead for the first time since early in the game with 1:30 left, and they just turned it over. It led to an Illini hoop after the time-out, and now they're up 64-61 with 43.4 secs left.

Meanwhile in Athens, UVM trailed UGA (Tom Brennan's alma mater) by 9 at the half, but they're on a 10-2 run in the 2nd and trail by just a pair with 11:38 left.

EDIT - And it's now a 16-2 run as the Catamounts take a 42-38 lead with 10:57 left.

EDIT - Jesus, make it 21-2, leading 47-38 with 8:50 left. Amazing.

EDIT - Charles Mann hits a pair from the line for the Dawgs. He's got all 11 of their points this half.

Mann scores on a spinning inside move and draws the foul with 2:25 left, and the Dawgs have their first lead in over 10 minutes, 56-54. Vermont looking a little disjointed now as the crowd gets back into it.

EDIT - Thornton with another bucket inside and another foul, this one on Clancy Rugg and UVM's leading scorer is done for the night -- and perhaps his career if the Catamounts don't come back in the next 1:34.  It's now a 59-54 UGA lead.

Vermont has shot just 4 of 12 from the line tonight. Georgia? 24 for 26 so far. There's your ball game.

EDIT - Carissimo sinks a pair to end a 14-0 Dawgs run, but UGA takes it 63-56.

Over the last 5 minutes, NIT #6 Iona and #3 LA Tech swapped the lead 7 times. When David Laury sank two free throws with :12 left, it put the Gaels up 88-87 and in position for the upset. But after the Bulldogs' Alex Hamilton missed a jumper with :02 on the clock, guard Kenneth "Speedy" Smith crashed the boards for the rebound and scored on the put-back, volleyball set-up style. Iona's full-court last-second heave came stunning close, but clanged off the rim. LA Tech survives and advances.

Clemson just beat Belmont to get to MSG, and they stormed the court.  That seems like a whole lot of irrational exuberance to me.

Agreed. I mean, you play in the fucking ACC and you just beat the friggin' Ohio Valley winner -- a team you trailed for most of the 2nd half -- in a game your school only won after deciding it actually needed to play defense in the final 2 minutes. Uhhh... yay. I guess.

I think the vast majority of these court stormings are no longer spontaneous and authentic, but rather planned "flash mob" style through texts, tweets and other social media. Especially those where the victory isn't gained on the final play. I wouldn't be surprised if university administrators (or at least the athletic departments) are in on it more often than not.

The Gophers knock off Southern Miss, 81-73, and get to MSG behind a 32-point night from Austin Hollins -- 8 of 14 from the floor with 6 threes, and a perfect 10-of-10 from the stripe while also racking 3 steals.
