Probably is his last stand. When was the last meaningful win for this program? Every time they've played a game with the potential to make them relevant in the last decade or more - they've lost.

Bo has the complete and total backing of Tom Osborne and therefore a large majority of the fanbase. Until Tom is gone (as in six feet under gone), Bo ain't going anywhere (and even Dr. Tom taking a dirt nap may not be enough, it might take the sellout streak ending or some losing seasons). Shit, even when that tape came out of Bo ripping the fanbase and all his clownshow antics on the sidelines, blame is deflected away from Pelini.

And to answer your question, their last "meaningful" win was the 1999 Big 12 Championship game.

Nebraska v. U tonight. Worth tuning in to see the highlights of great games between these teams being replayed. The first time I saw one of my favorite teams win a title was Nebraska topping Miami in 1995. Epic, epic, game.

Two programs that are shells of their former selves. They are the Dallas Cowboys of college football. Haven't been relevant for 10 years or more.

When it's no longer a big deal to beat either of these teams (which is the case nowadays) you know you living on reputation and memories only.

Nice win on the road last night at Northwestern. Still have to go into Wisconsin and Iowa. But they get Minnesota at home. They have a nice path to the Big 12 Championship Game.

Both MSU and OSU have to be rooting hard for the Huskers to win out the regular season. Both of those teams probably need a win over a highly ranked team to reach the playoffs.

Heading to 8-1. Good season for the Huskers. Probably their best team in a while. Winning the conference would be great for this program.

A lot depends on Abdullah's health.

Crunch time for the Huskers. Winning out would give them a shot at the playoffs. Going to be tough to do, on the road in Madison and Iowa and at home against a good Minnesota team. I think they would stand a chance against OSU on a neutral field. It's a good spot for them. They're running in a pack with a chance to make a move.

Nebraska is like some shitty middle Eastern country that peaked in the 200 B.C. - the world has changed and they're trying to restore glory. They are a rudderless program doomed to mediocrity trying to regain something that has been lost and is never coming back.

They should form a conference with Notre Dame, Michigan, Miami, Colorado, Penn State, and the service academics. Call it the legends league. That way at least one of those programs could win a conference.

Power has shifted to the south and to the west. How any coach can convince a prospect to opt for Lincoln over USC is beyond me. The Huskers used to do well in Socal, Texas, and Florida but those recruiting wells have been shut off them.

After a 9-3 season. Ouch.

Getting embarrassed by Wisconsin had to have been the final straw. Well... that and being a colossal asshole.

They played Michigan State & Minnesota tough, and beat good-but-not-great Iowa & Miami teams. Their other 7 wins were nothing to brag about: FAU, McNeese, Fresno, Illinois, Northwestern, Rutgers & Purdue.

Yes, that's the schedule that was before them, but weaker competition significantly ramps up the need to prevail against the truly challenging opposition.

The death blow was when the announcers at the Corn/Minny game said something along the lines of "9-3 and second or third place in their division has become the ceiling for Nebraska under Pelini".

Osborne probably had a stroke when he heard that.

I think Browndog is right. You can be a jerk when you're winning. Average doesn't get away with being a jerk.

Yes the "base of power" in college football has shifted to the south and to the west but there is no excuse for not being able to win just in the division of the conference to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa, and Bill Callahan was able to recruit top level talent to Lincoln, he just didn't do a very good job developing it.

MN, IA, and WI aren't south or west, those are the same areas as Nebraska - mostly rural with limited recruiting areas .  Bo went to just one Big Ten title game and got humiliated.  The humiliating defeats far far far outweighs the nine wins.  He needed to go.

Nebraska admin responds -

The University of Nebraska is in receipt of what appears to be a transcript of remarks delivered by former football coach Bo Pelini. These remarks to student-athletes were allegedly made during a non-official team meeting at a local high school, held two days after his termination. At this time, the University cannot authenticate the transcript nor do we have an audio version of the remarks.

If these comments were, indeed, spoken by Mr. Pelini, we are extremely disappointed, but it only reaffirms the decision that he should no longer be a leader of young men at Nebraska. His habitual use of inappropriate language, and his personal and professional attacks on administrators, are antithetical to the values of our university. His behavior is consistent with a pattern of unprofessional, disrespectful behavior directed by Mr. Pelini toward the passionate fans of Nebraska, employees of the university and, most concerning, our student-athletes. This behavior is not tolerated at the University of Nebraska and, among many other concerns, played a role in his dismissal.

Any assertions that the campus or athletics administration was not supportive of our student-athletes and our football program are flat-out false and are contradicted by the facts.

We are grateful that the new leadership in our football program is aligned with our values and will establish that you can be successful at Nebraska and that you can do it with integrity and class.

That was one hell of a last shot.

That reads to me like a guy who is angry, and is being "honest" with the players in such a way as to encourage as many of them to transfer as possible, possibly as a FU to the Athletic Director.  Going from the "isn't this place so negative?" to "these should be the best years of your life" seems intended to get a pretty specific reaction out of the players.  "I'm here for you, your AD isn't.  Do what you need to do.  Boy, isn't this place negative?  These should be great years for you.  Do what you need to do.  I'm here for you."  Even if it's true, that seems like an impressively well-designed approach to try to get that specific reaction.  Perhaps I'm just being cyncial.

Pelini is like a tenant who has failed to pay rent for 6 months and attempts to burn the house down after being evicted.

Prior to this, I wasn't so sure he should have been terminated. After, it's clear he was a major problem. I can't think of a good coach, college or pro, who lacks judgment to such a degree he goes off like that in public. Venting to a close friend or colleague is one thing - doing this is another.

Good riddance.

That's absolutely how I read it as well.  I don't follow Nebraska football closely, but Pelini strikes me as someone with a keen sense of entitlement who loves to play the victim.

I did love him referring to knowing he was gone when Osborne was forced out.  That was the joke out there, right?  That Pelini's job was safe as long as Osborne was there to protect him?

Yes, since he hired him
