And Rodney walks Escobar to load the bases. And now he's yanked and loudly booed as he leaves the field. One small bright spot in an otherwise miserable season.

40 or so games into the 2014 season - the records are a little bizarre:

12 of 15 teams in the AL are at or above .460 and 11 are within 3 games of .500

12 of 15 teams in the NL - same deal, at or above .460 and 8 are within 3 games of .500

Houston, the Cubs and Arizona account for an average of 26 losses apiece.

There's a lot of treading water in baseball so far.

So Harold Reynolds thinks the shift causes clubhouse rifts. He's the NBA referee of the MLB Network studio show.

I mean, just, why? What possible justification could there be? Not a household name for the casual fan, and drives the rest of us crazy. Why?

He is replacing Tim McIdiot. Seems like that is the type of "analyst" they like.

If Mejia is available in your league and you need saves hes worth a grab. A bit of a surprise entry into the Mets closer sweepstakes, but the guy has definite upside if he can keep his walks under control.

Umps really blew one in favor of the Giants tonight. Man on first no out and Pence at bat. He dribbles one along the first base line and runs into into the ball, clearly touching it with his left foot, in fair territory. Ball goes foul and umps call it a foul ball instead of an out. Pence proceeds to single and Posey doubles both runners in, giving the Giants the lead. Marlins manager apparently was told ground balls in front of first or third base umps are not challengable and he meekly walked back to the dugout. I would have been kicked out yelling and screaming after ripping out the first base bag.

Rays up 5-2 in 9th....Balfour comes in to close...walk, walk, single...he gets yanked and the Boxberger gives up a 3run homer to trout. Angels walk off 6-5.
Rays pen is a joke.

Quite the turnaround from the last time that he inherited loaded bases (2 Ks on 9 pitches).

Edit: "only" a 3 run jack. So not loaded. Must save his good stuff for then. Shoulda walked him.

As I understand it, Boxberger was just tossed into the game and wasn't quite warmed up.

As to why the shift causes clubhouse issues, it's because players get put in unfamiliar places, make an error, pitchers get upset, players get upset and BOOM. Honestly. He said that. "It causes all these problems and it doesn't even need to be done."

I guess the fact that it apparently works is lost on him. Not like he's going to see the numbers.

That's worse than Michael Kay claiming that the shift needed to be made illegal because it hurts offense and nobody spends the money to see good defense.

Unless I missed something, he only said that like a week ago.

When they played the Rays recently the Yankee announcers were basically saying the rays invented it but the Yankees perfected it. Maybe it wasn't Kay, though.

This is shaping up as a hilarious "Welcome to the D'Backs" game for LaRussa, trying to blow a 9-2 lead after they shelled Kershaw (10-7 now and guys on again in the 7th).

Heh, this couldn't have been more wrong, LA couldn't score any more and ARI scored 8 in the 7th and 8th for a 18-7 final. Goldschmidt is a monster.

Brandon Crawford is having one hell of a defensive season. Another play in the 5th today against the Marlins to add on to an already crazy highlight reel. His footwork and mechanics are flawless. The Giants are my other team so I'm biased, but with Simmons coming down to earth a little after last year's masterclass, I hope Crawford can get consideration for the Gold Glove this year.

Old friend Scott Atchison shows up in the Indians' bullpen. Tito call on him to ROOGY Miggy, and Atch gets the job done.

ed: and earns the win when Brantley pulls a walk-off homer on an Alburquerque meatball.

Hey, an interference call, except the runner was not given another base. Giants Tyler Colvin was rounding second and runs right into big Tulo. Ump pointed at Tulo but Colvin was not given third. First (near) interference I've seen since the world series. Good times.

Same game, for Red Sox fans, at least we don't have Latroy Hawkins, who must be older than Bill Russell, as closer. The Rockies are playing well this year, in large part to that Tulo guy, but Latroy ain't got nuthin' and how could they possibly contend long term with him there.

I am on Gameday, but why would Ausmus keep Scherzer in the game after giving up 12 hits and 7 runs and having more than 100 pitches?  Does he have no one he trusts in the bullpen?  (BTW the game is tied 7-7).

Well, Joe Nathan just blew a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the 9th, so...

What the he'll is wrong with Santana? I just looked at the box score and he's the only Indian without a hit, and that includes Giambi.

Jeff Samardzija is going to single-handedly should but won't get all the remaining yahoos who think wins mean something to admit defeat.  He's now got a 1.46 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, is averaging just under 7 IP per game over 10 starts, and is 0-4.

Edited to be more realistic.

DET/CLE ends on an Al Alburquerque bases loaded balk in the 13th.

11 - 10 CLE

It's not every day that we see a balk-off ending.

Old friend Victor Martinez hit his 12th home run, leads the league in batting average at .329, and is slugging .615. Hitting behind Miggy suits him.
