ESPN loves them some Manziel:

That's 26% of all mentions last night.

By the numbers, as aggregated from closed captioning:
  • ESPN brought up Manziel's name 83 times, and referred to him as "Johnny Football" 30 more.
  • The total of 113 mentions outpaces that of the top five draft picks combined.
  • #1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney came in second, earning 29 mentions on ESPN.
  • The network's longest period of time without mentioning Manziel: 18 minutes, 50 seconds—spanning the first three picks of the draft.
Obviously, there's some survivorship bias here, with Manziel falling to the 22nd pick. However, even simply going by mentions after the player's slot (and ESPN talked about Manziel clean through n0t only his 22nd slot, but basically the entire 23rd slot as well), Manziel racked up 14 mentions after his slot package. Clowney had five, Bortles had four, and each had a good deal longer than Manziel to be mentioned again.

I havent seen much outside of those two reports that say they were furious that they lost him.    Seattle was looking to move out of the first round before the draft even started given their lack of true pressing needs.
Well I don't think we'll know for sure, but Loyko is a good reporter and claims he confirmed that Seattle "lost their guy."

Either way, seems reasonable to believe the Pats had to take Easley there if they wanted him, which is the point.

Edit: I guess Loyko confirmed and Kyed RTed.

Niners trading a conditional 2015 4th rounder to Bills for Stevie Johnson.

I'm surprised the Bills could get that much for him coming off a down year, but with a billion picks at their disposal I love this for the 9ers. Three straight 1000 yard seasons before that. Good move.

The weird thing is that the 49ers are trading a 2015 pick, when its this year that they have a bazillion picks.  I expect them to try and trade at least one pick from this year into next year but I would still have expected to see them deal a current year pick in this kind of deal.

Good deal for both teams overall I think.  Johnson gives SF a speedy option on the outside.  The Bills just need to stockpile picks (especially having lost their 1 next year) and will be committed to starting Watkins and Woods anyway.

Last night was the most watched NFL draft. I fully expect ESPN's treatment of JFF to be Tebow-like for at least another year.

ESPN’s Most-Watched NFL Draft First Round: 9.9 Million Viewers
ESPN’s live telecast of the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Thursday, May 8, averaged 9,943,000 viewers with a 6.1 US rating based on fast nationals, according to the Nielsen Company, making it the most-viewed NFL Draft telecast in ESPN’s 35 years of presenting the event.

Just read that 9 DBs in the first round this year is a record.  The previous high was 7 three times including last year.

The NFL Draft destroyed playoff competition from 2 of the other 3 majors.

ESPN NFL Draft - 6.8
ESPN2 Port/SA - 2.7
ESPN2 Mia/Nets - 2.6
NFL Network Draft - 1.9
NBCN Bos/Mont - 1.2
NBCN LA/Anaheim - 0.7

Wow, it beat every other game combined. And the NBA and NHL games were staggered start times.

Question: do most of you guys watch on NFLN or ESPN? Wouldn't mind seeing a poll. I think each network has its own positives and negatives but at the end of the day Eisen >>> Berman so I tend to stick with NFLN.

Edit: also, I wonder if Berman ever had the chance to join NFLN, and if so, wonder if he regrets not going

Eisen>>>Berman but the main thing is Mayock >>>>> McShay/Kiper x Infinity. 2 years ago I switched 100% to NFL and never looked back.

My wife is having a bunch of her college friends over tonight, hosting a dinner party. So aggravating. I like them and all, but not tonight! Any posts you see from me after 730 or so will be from my bathroom.

Predicting I may have some "stomach issues".

I want OL today badly

Agreed. This team can win, even with injuries to any position, as long as they can protect #12. Depth, redundancy, and backups at OL is important and consequential.

So do the Pats go after a TE in one of these two rounds?

It's possible. I was kind of hoping for a Guard or Center though.

If Hyde drops to the NE as in Kiper's mock 2nd round, I'd be ecstatic. I don't think he'll get there, though.

Really hard to say, I think. They went to the 2 TE Set of Awesome after Gronk and Angel Dust both fell in the draft. So we don't really know if Belichick & Co. was planning that set, or found himself with too incredible talents and altered the offensive plan to take advantage.

Without knowing that, it's really hard to figure out if they want to try to go in that direction again.

I'll pay the NFL Network $50 to never show the Dallas war room (and the ball of creepiness that is Jerry Jones) again.

Kevin Seifert

Teams swap second round picks and Redskins get a third (No. 78 overall).

I get the importance of building around lines, but I had to go look up who Houston's QB was because I couldn't remember... great player they chose as I understand it, but was that wise?

I was saying same earlier today. This position has gone from being overvalued to being undervalued virtually overnight. You can sneak in and grab an immediate impact player outside of Round 1 which is rare.
