Yeah, there wasn't anything overly flagrant about it. He was literally on the baseline when he made contact, and everyone seemed to agree it was an okay play at the time.

What I don't get is why they sent runners back to 1st and 2nd. That's a headscratcher.

edit: Single by the next batter, umps decision to reset runners cost Virginia a run for sure.

I don't think there's a stipulation in the rule book to send runners back. If they rule that the runner interfered with a play on a second runner after he was tagged out you call that runner out. I don't get the sending him back at all.

(d) Any batter or runner who has just been put out hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate;

Wiel draws an 8-pitch walk.

Norwood reaches on a nubber in front of the mound as Waddell falls down after gloving it. He had no shot anyway.

EDIT - Great play by Cogswell, diving like Pedroia and throwing out Wiseman to end it.

What a gem by Waddell. 115 pitches, 9 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K.

We'll settle it tomorrow night.

Saving Howard for tomorrow night is so huge. Big chance he could be the difference maker. Waddell is the man.

Virginia owns 20 national titles all-time. First one was in 1938 in boxing. Last one was in 2013 in men's tennis. 9 innings away from 21st.
Back when college boxing was a thing, UVa was a powerhouse. They used to have fights in the old mem gym and pack the house consistently. Would be cool if that could come back somehow.
Other than that they tend to be dominant in sports played at country clubs or by people who belong to country clubs. The polo team kicks ass.
Couldn't watch tonight, looking forward to the game tomorrow.

I was just taking a shit at the espn crew who kept taking about vandy and their bowling title.

Oh, I know. And it was a well-deserved defecation. Just giving the Cavs their props.

Dansby Swanson swats Josh Sborz's first pitch off the glove of SS Pinero and into LF for a leadoff single for Vandy.

EDIT - Tremendous catch of a Rhett Wiseman foul pop along the 3B photographers' well railing by Kenny Towns. Swanson is able to tag up & move to 2B.

EDIT - Bryan Reynolds draws a walk. Two on for John Norwood.

EDIT - A double-steal and Robbie Coman throws to 2nd but it's two stories too high. Swanson scores, but UVA CF Branden Downes is able to gun down Reynolds at 3rd. Two down, bases empty, Commodores lead 1-0.

EDIT - Base hit up the middle for Norwood. Artie Lewicki already warming up in the Cavs pen. Zander Wiel up.

EDIT - Sborz loses Wiel on 4 straight balls after being ahead 0-2. Two on, two out for Vince Conde. Sborz at 20 pitches this inning.

EDIT - Conde caught looking at strike 3 to end the threat. Huge escape for Sborz after 27 pitches.

Vanderbilt is 39-9 this year when scoring first. Virginia is 11-9 when the opponent scores first, and 5-3 when foe scores in 1st inning.

Vanderbilt's 17 stolen bases in the 2014 CWS tie a series record by one team. First done in 1955 by Oklahoma State in 5 games.

In addition to Vanderbilt's 17 stolen bases in the CWS, keep in mind they've only allowed 2 SB in 13 NCAA Tourney games.

Like Swanson for Vandy in the t-1st, UVA's Brandon Cogswell with the first-pitch swing and contact off Carson Fulmer. Unlike Swanson, it's an out -- a grounder to Dansby at 2B.

EDIT - Pinero down swinging at some nasty 96-mph heat. Two down for Mike Papi, who's roundly booed by the Vandy contingent.

EDIT - And down he goes on three pitches, with the changeup sealing the deal on the swing-and-miss. On to the t-2nd after a dominant inning.

O'Connor wastes no time and takes no chances, as Sborz is done after just one inning. RHP Artie Lewicki takes the hill.

EDIT - Ro Coleman, all 5'5" of him, flies to left after a 7-pitch AB.

EDIT - Tyler Campbell grounds an 0-1 pitch to 2nd. Two down.

EDIT - Karl Ellison looked hopeless and helpless, going down swinging on three pitches. Fooled badly each time. On to the b-2nd.

Joe McCarthy leads off with a walk for the Cavs.

EDIT - Great play at 2B by Swanson, going to his left for a hard grounder by Derek Fisher, and he gets McCarthy on the force. Conde drops the ball but it's ruled on the transfer, prompting an argument by O'Connor and boos from the Hoos in Hooville.

EDIT - Towns flies to left where Reynolds makes the tough catch in the sun.

EDIT - A balk called on Fulmer's pick-off move to 1st, and Fisher heads to 2nd with 2 out for John LaPrise.

EDIT - LaPrise reaches on a comebacker partially deflected by Fulmer's bare hand. Swanson had no chance. 1st & 3rd for Downes.

EDIT - Down goes Downes swinging at more 96-mph heat. Inning over, but they made Fulmer work for it as he's now at 37 pitches. On to the t-3rd.

Lewicki gets Swanson swinging.

EDIT - Wiseman pops out in 3B foul ground to Towns.

EDIT - Reynolds draws a 5-pitch walk.

EDIT - Wow, an extremely close play at first on the pickoff move, but Reynolds barely gets back.

EDIT - Norwood draws a walk after falling behind 0-2. Two on, two out for Zander Wiel.

EDIT - A high shallow fly to center ends the threat. On to the b-3rd, still 1-0 Vandy.

Between his jerky motion and stupid glasses, Fulmer reminds me of K-Rod. Makes it easy to loathe him.

Good call by O'Connor on the early hook. Lewicki's presence on the mound is much more comforting even with a couple of walks.

Still can't believe Lewicki lasted until the 8th round of the draft (Tigers). Meanwhile, Fulmer's a top-5 pick next year for sure, and perhaps the #1 overall. Good call on the K-Rod comparison.

Coman goes down swinging.

EDIT - Cogswell's 8-pitch PA ends with an easy fly-out to CF.

EDIT - Pinero with a hard-hit liner but right at Norwood in center. On to the t-4th.

Lewicki off the mound to field Conde's nubber and throws him out.

EDIT - Coleman's inside-out blooper falls into shallow CF.

EDIT - After 7 throws to first, Lewicki gets the 6-4-3 DP grounder from Campbell. Inning over, on to the b-4th.

Papi flies to center.

EDIT - McCarthy grounds to Wiel, who flips to Fulmer covering. Two down.

EDIT - Fisher grounds to short, and it's another 1-2-3 inning for Fulmer and his most efficient frame so far tonight -- just 8 pitches and 61 for the game.

Ellison down on a wicked Lewicki slider. Jesus, that's just sick.

EDIT - Swanson grounds out, Towns to Papi. Two down.

EDIT - Wiseman flies to center. Lewicki with 64 pitches, and both hurlers are in full command right now. On to the b-5th.

Towns flies to center to lead off the Cavs' 5th.

EDIT - LaPrise fouls out to Campbell at 3B. Two down.

EDIT - Downes whiffs for the 2nd time tonight. That one capped an 8-pitch PA. Fulmer now at 77 pitches (5 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K).

Reynolds with a fly to left leads off the Vandy t-6th.

EDIT - Norwood with a Baltimore chopper to 3rd, and Towns has to rush the throw. It's in the dirt, Papi can't snare it, and Norwood heads to 2nd. Pretty sure that's a base hit plus an E-5 rather than a 2-base error.

EDIT - Norwood moves to 3rd on a Wiel grounder to 2nd.

EDIT - Conde with a high-bouncing grounder to the SS hole, but Pinero had no chance. Had to range right and then set, but his feet slipped on on the grass and Norwood crossed the plate easily. 2-0, Commodores.

EDIT - Coleman flies to CF to end the frame. Lewicki's at 82 pitches. On to the b-6th.

#9 hitter Robbie Coman with an 8-pitch AB and an opposite-field single to short RF.

EDIT - Great diving stop by Swanson to his left saves a hit. Cogswell retired, but Coman moves to 2nd.

EDIT - Pinero with a RBI single to right-center, fighting off the inside pitch. Coman scores, and it's a 2-1 game. Fulmer now at 97 pitches with Papi up.

Pinero steals 2nd. Tying run in scoring position. And now Papi walks. This should be it for Fulmer at 103.

Ruh Roh. McCarthy HBP, sacks juiced for Derek Fisher. Still just one out.

EDIT - Two great pitches by Stone after falling behind 1-0 on Fisher.

EDIT - Make it three, as he gets him swinging. Huge.

EDIT - Hard grounder to Conde at short, but he bobbles it. Throw to 2nd is late. Run scores. Tie game, 2-2.

EDIT - Stone whiffs LaPrise, but the damage is done. All square heading to the 7th.
