Mariners back to sucking. Down 0-3 to the Astros having K'd 9 times by Colin McHugh who has a career ERA nearing 9.

I'm really enjoying Cano's level of suck so far. I know he'll get hot, but still. Fun while it lasts.

Billy Beane paid $10mm for a closer and the A's cannot find anyone to reliably close out games for them.

Should I just start a Vin Scully splooge thread? Every time I listen to him call a game, I feel better about life.

Second that, I know I tune to Dodgers games sometimes just to hear Scully. Between him and Kuiper and Krukow for the Giants, surely the NL West is the strongest announcing division in baseball?

Pujols hits number 500 last night and nary a mention on SoSH or in this game thread. My how times have changed in baseball. This would have been one of the three biggest events of the season prior to the steroid era.

So sad to see Glenn Beckert hobbling onto the field with a cane. That guy could play some serious second base in his day.

Unlike the Fenway celebration, every player on hand at Wrigley is being introduced individually.

And here comes Dempster.

EDIT - And now Hawk Dawson. Still built like a brick shithouse.

EDIT - It's a parade of ex-Red Sox as Fergie Jenkins joins the party.

EDIT - Only 15 or so ex-players? Weak sauce. Well, that's why they could each be introduced.

So strange to hear Wayne Messmer sing a national anthem in front of a crowd in Chicago without everyone cheering at the top of their lungs. #Blackhawks #ChicagoStadium

Definitely enjoying the Cubs 10th Anniversary celebration.  Nice throwback units too.  Brutal winter in the Windy City, the ivy on the outfield wall is dead.  Gotta say I love that park.  Watched quite a few games there.

Yeah, it's strange, and also depressing. No matter what else they were showing at the time, and regardless of time zone, ESPN used to break into broadcast coverage to air every AB of a player about to hit #500 (provided no competing network was showing it). I remember Reggie Jackson hitting his 500th at about midnight eastern time. My roommates and I had been in our apartment at UMass for about a month, the first time we'd had color cable TV on our own after two years of dorm life with rabbit ears on a shitty black & white. So that was pretty cool to see live.

NBC did the same with Michael Jack Schmidt, breaking into Red Sox-Jays five times on a Saturday afternoon before he finally went yard in the 9th.

Anyone have the pitch fx for the Rangers-A's game? Gameday has Gray getting insanely squeezed.

Kuiper in midseason deadpan form on the Giants telecast. Bochy thrown out for arguing balls and strikes; "well, I think people have been arguing balls and strikes since the game was invented, 100 years ago, at Wrigley Field."

Could there be a more appropriate outcome on Wrigley's 100th Birthday than for the Cubs to lose in spectacularly agonizing but wholly predictable and hilarious fashion by blowing a 3-run lead in the 9th?

Grimm now on to face Aaron Hill. Three runs already in for ARI, still 1st & 3rd with 2 outs...

Thank god someone else saw this. I need to share the misery. Oh, the Cubs. My poor grandma is 84 and still watches every day and it breaks my heart.

Of course not. A routine fly to RF eludes the glove of Ruggiano, who lies motionless in the bullpen grabbing his leg after attempting a sliding catch. Two runs score, and he's being gingerly walked off the field with an arm around each trainer's shoulder.

A 5-run 9th for the D-Backs.

Oh god I didn't even realize it was the 100th birthday. It's so appropriate but oh man....ouch. To be a Cubs fan...

You all know there's zero chance the Cubs come back to win this, right? I mean, the outcome has been pre-ordained by the Baseball Gods.

I feel like that kid. The Cubs have always been my #2 as my dad and his family are all from Iowa/Wisconsin and love the Cubs. I was ready to not root for the Yankees in the 2003 World Series because they deserved their chance. I turned on the game right before the grounder off second base. God damn.

That's beautiful. More proof why OHR is a must-follow Twitter account for any baseball fan.

In the running for the best account on Twitter.  Firing fastballs like, well, like Old Hoss.

A related if slightly off topic question: anyone have a link to good lists of baseball Twitter folk to follow?  I've got a couple of beat writer ones I subscribe to, but I'd like some analysis and comedy as well.  I could do it myself, but I greatly prefer mooching off of other people's hard work.

Wacha headed for Wood/Clemens territory. 9ks through 3 innings.

After a long fourth inning, Wacha looks to be more in Danny Salazar territory.

Wacha so far tonight: 4 IP, 10 K, 8 H+BB, 2 ER, 93 pitches
Salazar on 4/10/14: 3.2 IP, 10 K, 8 H+BB, 5 ER, 93 pitches

Proof that the save stat is pointless. He did not deserve the save

He was unlucky on the BS in Texas a couple of weeks ago (should have been out of the inning when an underhanded flip from SS pulled the 2B-man off the bag for what would have been the last out). He was lucky tonight (bases loaded, 1 out, line drive into 1B-man's glove, who touched the bag for the unassisted DP).

Like they say, it all even's out.

V“@matthewpouliot: Oh geez, Ryan Braun was stretching with a bat in the dugout and clocked Segura in the head, WGN broadcast showed.”
“@LenKasper: Segura hit in face by Braun who was swinging bat in dugout. Hard to watch.”

If they start to get on Braun for being a dumb ass, how long before he starts the rumor that Segura was making anti semitic slurs.

ESPN's Keith Law reports that Bryce Harper will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and is expected to be out until at least early July.
