The Slums of Shaolin
The time has come for another golf thread (I'm trying to set the record).

I'm more excited for this golf season than I've been in a long time.  This is the first off season that I've had in a while where I knew I'd be going back to playing golf a lot more regularly, so I've been trying to work on my game a bit.

Up here in Rhode Island, especially this winter, it has been tough.  I actually joined a gym for the first time in my life, and the biggest reason was because they have a golf facility in the basement where I can hit balls.  I started taking a lesson once a week and will continue to do so until April or so.  I also take a "Golf" fitness class on Wednesday nights which works out core muscles as well as for arms and back muscles.  It doesn't seem like much work when I do it but I am sore as fuck the next day.  I hit balls 2 or 3 times per week as well.

Last year I came back after a 3 year hiatus or so.  At the end of the year I was an 11.  Thinking about my game after the season ended, I figured I became an 11 while averaging 1 fairway hit per round, and that is not an exaggeration.  My short game has always been great, but last year it became a crutch instead of something that helps me score low.  By far, my worst club was my driver.  People say, "Well then, don't hit the driver".  Fuck that.  If I want to get good again, I need to hit every club in my bag.  We've worked on my driver a bit this off season and I like what I see so far.

I was "chicken winging" at the top of my backswing last year, which meant hitting the club straight into the ground, or pushing everything WAY right because my arms had to double hitch to get back into a hitting position and my arms weren't catching up with my hips.  This year I'm concentrating on the transition at the top of the back swing and driving through the ball.  Here is my progress so far, but if there are any tips out there they are appreciated:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptIZgitokLo

I know my grip is strong, but believe it or not that is the most neutral its been in a long time.  At some points last year, my hand was almost under the club.

I belong to a club in RI and my goal is to play 54-72 holes per week.  Whether its 9 after work or 36 on the weekends.  Whatever.

Also, last year contemplated going away with Dad to play Turning Stone.  We didn't do it last year but this year I think we are.  Its a 4 hour drive or so and the courses look great for the value.

Anyone in southern NE who wants to play this year let me know.

Zomp, I'd be delighted to play with you, but I am a 24 so I will bring your game down.

This winter I have taken intensive lessons at City Golf in downtown Boston, reconstructing my swing from the ground up.  All winter I've had one lesson a week plus two practice sessions in a simulator  plus the occasional practice session (without balls) in my home.  This is a very long term project and I don't expect to see dividends untl perhaps mid-way through the summer, but it is clear that my swing is being shaped into something totally new and much more classic.  I'm excited about the project.

Zomp,
what gym has the golf facility in the basement? I'm in North Prov...
I'm equally excited as my wife informed me that my X-mas, bday, anny, and father's day gift is a set of custom irons

I'm eager as my last round of '12 was cut short (6 holes) but I was only 2 over and had hit 4 of 5 fairways and 4 greens

How're the quality of lessons there, and what's the cost like? I live in Southie and have been looking for a place to swing during the winter and maybe take some lessons. I definitely need some instruction on my swing but also don't want to overhaul it. I'm generally in the mid-high 90's but have a good swing base that I think I can build on to get my scores down.

I am thrilled with the quality of the instruction, but I can't tell you what the cost is like for the occasional lesson.  That's because I went all in for their one-year membership (about $2,500) that gets me unlimited lessons and playing time for a year.  I knew that I needed a complete overhaul, and just a few lessons were not going to do it. The clincher was the round of golf with the pro later in the year, so he can see what I actually do on a golf course.  In general this facility is not cheap, but it is very good.  They now have a spots on Bromfield St and at Internatlonal Place.

steve,

426 fitness in Warren RI. Its a little pricey though.

Also, by posting that video of me hitting driver, I'm hoping to go in the 8th round of the money league.

That swing looks pretty good to me! I shudder to think what I look like on video, which is probably why I will probably call up City Golf and get a couple lessons this winter.

I did get some new game improvement irons for xmas, which I hope will be more forgiving than my 15 year old titlist dci's i got off craigslist a couple years ago.

I'm down playing any time down in Lil Rhody, Zomp.

Zomp, contact me if you want to play Rehoboth Country Club this season. We have a lot of tree-lined fairways at RCC. You look like a guy who can hit it long and occasionally wrong! That's how I play, too. Hit the bleepin' driver all the time.

Has your instructor mentioned anything about your hands being too far away from your body at address? You look like you setup great, but right as you're about to hit, you straighten your arms and stick your ass way out. Maybe it's the angle.

Also, download V1 golf and then import that video and draw a straight line next to your left ear and another on top of your head and look at how far off the ball you're moving your head.

Nothing about my setup.  Sometimes he tells me to stand "taller" to the ball, and the only way I do that is by moving closer to the ball so I do stand too far sometimes.

I definitely move my head...even when I was playing good I moved it.  Definitely have to work on that.

They seem to have saved the greens on the back nine that were burned out last summer. Course should be in good shape in 2013. Rehoboth CC plays to around 6,500 yards. Here's a link:

Will do!  I'm a member at Alpine Country Club down in Cranston.  In the summer, I doubt there are faster greens in the state.  Always down to reciprocate

Eddy is my fucking idol.

Still here.  The best player I've ever played with, by a very wide margin.  He lit it up this year on the NEPGA and almost qualified for the senior tour.

Quick story about Eddy:

The first year my dad and I were members, we're pulling onto the 10th tee which is right next to the putting green and Eddy is giving a lesson.  He's teaching one of our better golfers how to hit chips that bite.  We pull up, he says to the guy "watch this", chips the ball, it takes two bounces, checks, and rolls right into the hole which was about 30 feet away.  He and the guy start laughing and Eddy says, "Well, thats luck...but I'd take anywhere within 5 feet from this distance".

Then he did it again.

My favorite Ed Kirby memory is the time he was under par early in his first round at the US Open and was just about leading the tournament. He played better at the Open twice than Faxon and Andrade.
Kirby is a great example of how good you have to be to make it on the Tour. It might be a tougher climb than baseball.

I'm seriously considering the annual membership since I live in Southie (and can get there quickly) and they dropped the price to about $1700. That's tough to pass up, along with your recommendation. I'm going to head in tomorrow in person to see what the deal is. Any preference between Bromfield or International place?

Bromfield is the more complete facility but you don't have to choose.  You can go to either one at any time.   I'd recommend going to Bromfield first to see what they have.  International is newer and cleaner but less stacked with hitting bays etc.

Went in today to check it out and talk to Chris the manager guy. Was very impressed, it will definitely help me, and I think I'll get a few months for a membership at minimum. I'd jump for the annual, I just don't know how often I'll use it in the summer months to make the cash outlay worth it.

Yes, that's probably wise.  In my case I needed a new engine, transmission, struts, the works.  It can't happen just in the winter.

I'm going to St. Pete in three weeks for my spring training golf tuneup. Playing three days with my brother. At my age, you need to tune the old muscles up down South before getting serious about the golf season.

Watching a little golf on TV is important, too. Seeing Tiger in good form last week and then seeing Phil's highlights today just whet the appetite for a new season.

Who else goes South to play golf in late winter? And where?

I haven't in 4 or 5 years, but we used to go to either Orlando or the World Golf Village in St Pete to play.

Not in late winter, but my dad and I used to go to Myrtle Beach 3 times a year to play.  Usually in April, July (for the Father/Son challenge), and Columbus Day weekend.  If anyone needs any advice on where to play in Myrtle, let me know.

4 Peters and I were discussing going to Turning Stone the other day.  I mentioned it in last year's Golf thread but it never materialized.  This year I'm definitely going.  For around $500 you get to stay in the Hotel and play their 3 courses (2 of them unlimited use).  All 3 rank pretty highly on any New York golf list.  If anyone would be interested, let me know.  Thinking a Fri-Sun, not sure when yet.  Late May perhaps.

Thoughts Zomp? I haven't been down there in 10 years. Joining in on a buddies trip they take every year.

Please don't take offense to this, as I have played all of those courses and love them, but aside from Heritage Club you are playing the "second tier" of courses in Myrtle.  They are all pretty nice, and Kings North is a blast...but if you want to have a treat, try to get on one of Grande Dunes (both courses), Caledonia, and The Dunes.  Also, the Barefoot courses are really fun...but the Pete Dye course is hell (because of the difficulty).

Caledonia is my favorite golf course I have ever played.  If you can somehow switch one of your days to that course, its worth it.  Its what you think a Southern Golf Course would look like.  Think Augusta mixed with the course from Legend Of Bagger Vance.

Parkland and Moorland are a lot of fun if you're into Links Golf (I am).  Some days they have a person playing the bagpipes outside of the club house...kind of neat.

Going to Orlando at the end of Feb beginning of March.  Have organized this kind of trip for 10+ years.  Courses will be:

Shingle Creek
Southern Dunes
Reunion (Palmer)
Orange County National (both courses)
Celebration

My game sucks and I am in the middle of a complete overhaul, but what the hell.  I can't stop myself.

If someone out there wants to get involved in this group in the future, let me know.  It is mostly men in their 60s with handicaps ranging from 16 - 26.

So I broke my 5 wood today. The face has a crack in it so the club is officially fucked.

If anyone can find me an Adams Insight XTD a3OS 5 wood, they get a free round at my club.

I've searched the internet and came up with nothing.

Short of that, I need recommendations. I want to Golftown today and hit the new Tour Exotics and Callaway 5 woods, I liked them, but for $300 they need to be able to regrip themselves.

I also hit a used Nike VR 5 wood with the Str8-fit shaft and I liked that. For $50 it may be the winner.

Will do.  I usually get back east once a year and I'm long overdue.  Would love to get in a round when I'm back and all of my fellow golfers growing up moved away.  I'll buy the drinks.

FYI, watching your video above, you start your swing by sliding your whole torso away from the ball.  It's not the shoulder turn you want to start with and will lead to inconsistent contact.  I bet you can it hit far to the right and far to the left.  Additionally, your hands look behind the club face at address instead of in line or a bit forward.  Have you ever tried a slight forward press at the start of your swing or at address?

I am officially the biggest sucker for drivers.  Played yesterday at Pumpkin Ridge and hit my driver like shit all day.  My buddy just got a new RBZ Tour X-Flex which I of course had to hit.  Murdered it every time with a nice high draw.  Mine ships tomorrow.  Golf is such a tease.  I'm sure I'll develop a nice snap hook or block slice with it within 4 rounds.

You say its not the shoulder turn you want to start with, but you don't tell me what is. Don't tease me.

I hit it far left, far right, and far everywhere. Its maddening because I'm hitting the ball on the screws almost every time but my swing is inconsistent.

Yeah I'm trying to get my hands ahead of the ball, definitely something I'm working on.

I went to the range on the day we had 58 degree weather. Definitely hitting the ball incosnsistent (this time a year I'll take anything) but really working on sticking my right elbow into my side on the down swing has helped tighten up my shots.

All I mean by the shoulders is that you sort of slide backwards as the first move in your swing.  If your head is in the middle of your stance at address it's closer to your back foot when you start moving the clubhead.  It's kind of hard to show with youtube videos.  I second the notion on getting V1 golf on either your phone or computer (or both).  You can draw a line straight down from your left shoulder and you'll see how much your upper body slides to start your swing.  It has the additional side effect of moving your hands further behind the ball.

Have a look at this swing sequence of Rory McIlroy and watch how his shoulders never slide left or right, they just rotate.  That's what you want.  I tried to go frame by frame through your swing because there are a few other things going on but it's too hard in Youtube.  I'll also just throw in that your backswing is too long.  It's one of the things causing your arms to break down.  Try 3/4 back swings (which will end up parallel) for a bit on the range and see if your consistency improves.

So, quieter takeaway and shorter backswing then post more video.

I was watching our club champion and +2 on the range last weekend start every swing already 1/2 way through his backswing, abbreviate the backswing and hit every ball perfectly.  The more you do in your backswing the more you have to do correctly.  All of the power in the downswing comes in the last 1/2 when your hands, wrists and forearms flip the clubhead like whip.  If you can see the clubhead you've gone way too far.  Long backswings are the devil.  I've found that people don't see how long their swings are either.  If you tried to take 1/2 a backswing I'll bet it ends up parallel.

I have to agree on Caledonia. Amazing course. Not long, but immaculate set up with fast greens and a great look. Try not to get stuck teeing off on 10....the 9th hole is the only disappointing hole on the course...it's a 90 yard par 3 where it appears they ran out of land frankly. Ending on 18 is fantastic...400 yard par 4 with a second shot over water to a two tiered green, and the clubhouse porch overlooks the 18th green, so you'll be the subject of wagers from the onlookers.

Dye Course at Barefoot is extremely difficult. Dye was originally supposed to be a private course (it has its own clubhouse, while the other three Barefoot courses share one clubhouse), and it's got long carries and some crazy hazards.

I'm actually partial to the Legends courses. Heathland is links golf, Moorland is a bit of a tricked up Dye design, but for my money Parkland is a treat. The designer of Caledonia (and True Blue, which is Caledonia's sister course, and also highly recommended) did the bunkering at Parkland and it also has an Augusta feel on some of their holes. Heritage is also a great course, but when I played it a couple years ago the greens had a good amount of disease, hopefully they have come back. Definitely try and add Caledonia and True Blue to your schedule

Caldeonia is also the favorite of me and my brother. We played it twice last March. Can't get enough. Love the trip in through the tree-lined driveway. It's like Augusta for average people and it's short enough where you can shoot a decent score.

We usually stay south of MB to avoid all the traffic and play the courses down there.

I might also recommend the TPC Myrtle Beach course.  I've only played once and we were interrupted by lightening but I remember it being an amazing track.  Very difficult though if I recall correctly.

Send it back to the company. They'll make it right -- there's no way a 5-wood face should crack. I've heard of driver faces cracking, but that's a lot more force being applied to a driver. Unless, of course, the 5-wood is older than 4 or 5 years.

Great example of this is Gary Woodland, just watch how short his swing is and he's the longest hitter on tour when he wants to be. He absolutely murders the ball.

Anybody got some good courses they recommend in the Fort Lauderdale area of Florida. Going to be down there end of the month to visit some family and bringing the sticks to play a few rounds

any recommendations on a good instruction setup in MA? I've taken lessons at Golf Galaxy and at a course and have usually preferred the video analysis, but I can't say either has improved me for more than 2 weeks.  I'm awfully tired of being a bad golfer who has a swing that everyone says looks great and would love to commit to figuring this out, but it's really hard to know who/where to go to get this corrected

Yes, that's probably wise.  In my case I needed a new engine, transmission, struts, the works.  It can't happen just in the winter.
After one lesson and the one session on my own in a hitting bay...this is going to be a lot of work. Definitely not regretting the decision though.

Edit: I really need to find a place to park though rather than taking the bus. It's turning into a 40 min round trip bus commute for what is realistically an 8 min round trip drive, and I'm the guy who gets onto the bus holding a club or two.

Koufax, I'm willing to bet money that you will be a sub 20 handicap at some point this year if you are doing this much work in the off season. No doubt about it. I've found the single most important thing to improving my game is simply playing more. People can read all the books, spend some time on the range, etc., but until you start playing 72 holes a week, I don't think it's really possible to see much improvement.

Getting to a few other things talked about in the thread, I agree with shortening the back swing. A couple years ago, I started going through a massive funk with my irons and couldn't figure it out. My game has always been about my wedges and short game, and I couldn't figure out why from 125 in, I could hit my wedges perfectly, but any time I went to a longer iron, I hit them like shit. Finally, it dawned on me that with my wedges, I was only taking a "half" of a back swing, so I said to myself "Self, why not hit all of your irons with the same swing as your wedges?" It took a few rounds, but when it sunk in, I immediately started hitting my wedges better than I ever had in my life, and actually went from hitting a high fade to a draw. It was one of the most insane changes to a ball flight you'll ever see. Of course, shortly after, my woods went to complete shit, and I haven't been able to figure out how to shorten those swings and not lose massive distance.

I'm a member at Andover, and we just replaced all of the greens on the back nine, redid all of the bunkers, and changed the landscape/trees, etc. on some holes in the offseason. They did the front nine last offseason, so I'm really looking forward to see how things come out. Unfortunately, I haven't swung a club since Labor Day weekend because we closed the back nine early last year and I kind of couldn't motivate to play just the front nine, so I finished as a 10.3 index, but expect that to climb rapidly early in the season until I figure things out again. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to set something up and get you guys up here to play this summer. If anyone is ever in the area and has a foursome and wants to get out, let me know. I can get guests out there even if I'm not playing with them during weekday afternoons and stuff, just have to pay the cart/greens fees which I think is around $115 for the guest rate. Obviously, this assumes you won't be assholes. :) Anyway, looking forward to this season.

My GF refers to SOSH people as my "imaginary friends." So when deathofthebambino invites his imaginary friends to play at his club, how does he introduce them? It's a legit question.
