Obviously take this with a grain of salt but my coworker was a team mate of Franklin in college . He has talked to people still close with Franklin and said that the job was offered to Franklin and he's currently mulling it over
Some Nit insider tweeted that Franklin will be introduced as HC Thursday. Makes sense, based on that flight tracker Canderson listed.

Got to say I'm surprised and pleased that Joyner and The Searchers may have hired a second straight outsider who knows how to recruit and run an offense. Hopefully he will promote LJ to DC. Now this would be a new era, a progressive one, for however long Franklin stays here.

I like the hire for PSU.   I commented before that I liked Franklin as a coach more than Strong. I think he'll be an upgrade on BoB

Hearing it's a done deal.

Wonder how much that rape coverup follows him and if the media kills PSU over it. Hope not.
I imagine Erickson went on the plane yesterday to find out how Franklin would respond to questions about the scandal. He must have been satisfied.
Nothing tops a pedophile scandal. We've seen rape charges and sexual assault cases in big programs for many years. Somehow, they seem to go away, usually at the expense of the victim. Amazing how the formula hasn't changed much in the 42 years since Penn State dealt with a rape case involving a touted young prosect. It went to trial and the defense lawyers ripped away at the victim's credibility. Paterno layered himself from the case. Never spoke to the media about it. Welcomed the kid back in the fall of 1972.

Something you may want to keep an eye on is that a sports guy on a TV station in Philly is reporting that Larry Johnson is leaving the program.
Pennlive.com updates this, says Johnson is probably unhappy, as John Clark of NBC10 suggests, but that the school will do everything to keep LJ in the fold. That means a good raise and a more prominent title. If Franklin gets the job, the first thing he does is reach out to Larry Johnson and ask him what he needs.
LJ has never been a head coach. I suspect he could get a HC job next year but right now is not a good time to look for one. Most D-I schools require head coaching experience from applicants.
BTW, LJ has already interviewed for the Penn State job, according to Pennlive.com

I'd like to believe that the first thing the new coach does is reach out to Johnson. It would obviously be the smart thing to do. I think Johnson had his interview for the job on Tuesday if I am not mistaken.

Even with suggested pay raise and pumped up title, I just wonder how many times LJ is willing to accept the role of bridesmaid.  Granted, for the longest time PS (Pre-Scandal) it looked like JoePa was going to stay until he dehydrated from age and blew away.  In that scenario no one was going anywhere.  But now, in the span of a little over 2 years - in the immediate-post scandal fiasco-naming-of-Tom Bradley-as-interim fallout, the national search that lead to BO'B's hiring, and now this, LJ was within immediate striking distance and was bypassed, LJ must be miffed to some degree that the school did not immediately look within to a loyal soldier, all the comments about no head coaching experience notwithstanding.  I can understand if he walks.

Of course, LJ may be a person who is content to never head the fray, but to excel at what he knows best and to fit well within the well-developed schema of someone who has experience running the whole show.

All I know is that LJ, alongside Tom Bradley, is one of if not the best assistant coaches not only on the Penn State staff, but likely on any staff in the country.  A coach who not only has produced an army of NFL talent, but who has also sat in the living rooms and kitchens, and sat in stands of untold high school games, and met with scores of the HS coaches of promising recruits all over the east coast and beyond - and achieved great success in those visits.  In many cases - probably even more so than JoePa (especially in the past 10 years) LJ had MORE influence in a prospect's decision to join the Nittany nation.

I hope whomever the next HC is, that he does whatever needed, and that the school will support, to keep him at his rightfully and hard-earned place of respect.

I don't think LJ has any problem leading the show. He was quite the successful high school coach for two decades. The Internets claim he was a six-time MD coach of the year. Don't really get why he's not the clear choice, but that could be because Joyner was a BOT guy and doesn't want the old regime (speculation alert). This smells like Scrap all over again.

Franklin earned his recruiting spurs while coaching at Maryland. His skill in that region rivals LJ. Maybe he doesn't want to keep a holdover coach who interviewed for the head job and is unhappy he didn't get it. Happens all the time.

I think this is a great hire ... And not just because I think BC has a chance to grab a kid or two from Vandy's recruiting class.

Larry Johnson is not getting a head coaching job, unless he wants to drops many levels down.    The guy is 62 year old, and no one is hiring 62/63 year old first time head coaches.

I guess he could call UMass they might be willing to take a chance, they have nothing left to lose

If he wants to leave and be a DL coach somewhere else, his phone would ring off the hook.

Yeah, I agree, Mike. Didn't mean to imply he could still get a D-I job at his age.

Penn State has scheduled a major press conference for 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Gotta be James Franklin, right?

I think I mis-read Joyner's connection to the Football Lettermen Club at Penn State, of which he is a member. Most of the football alumni wanted to stay inside. Joyner even mentioned he is one of them at a presser after O'Brien left. But the difference is, the Lettermen and everyone else pounded Joyner two years ago after Paterno got fired. Joyner became AD and represented administration. He's obviously on the side of management, and maybe it's a good thing because Franklin is another good choice in terms of recruiting and creative offensive ideas. If they get two years out of Franklin, the program will have four solid recruiting classes from its interim coaches to ensure a solid future a level or three below Ohio State.

I don't think O'Brien has given PSU much of a thought since he took the Texans job. PSU is ancient history for him at this point.
He's definitely looking forward but it's hard to ignore the news at your old job. I think he will at least note the salary adjustment before going back to interviewing assistant coaches and taking down old Texans photos from his office wall.

This is a big raise for Franklin, right?
His salary wasn't public record so no one really knows, though it was widely believed he made $3m/year. Reports said Vandy's AD offered him a 10 year / $5m per deal this week.
