Watching this Stanford team vs Oregon is frustrating. Feel like this is what mich should be (physical team, plays pro style but mixes in other stuff). Realize harbaugh wouldn't have done it overnight but feel like he would have made the wolverines pretty damn tough.

Not giving up on hoke et al, but still...harbaugh was such a great fit.

Pretty sure Stanford is the kind of team that Hoke wants to build but...you know, execution. The team has to execute.

Yes, it's frustrating. Hoke promised us that he'd build a tough physical team. The current team is far from tough and physical. It's year 3. What's worse is that you don't see the progression you wanted to see.

I don't like the shots taken at true freshmen. At the same time, I don't think it's as far off base as everyone in the Michigan media made it out to be. I do not like Jason Whitlock either.

That was my take. Felt like Whitlock went too far with his criticisms, but I sense that there is at least a sliver of truth to it.

I was also happy to be reminded of what Hoke was able to accomplish in the past and hope he can find that success again.

Deserved to lose after that terrible playcalling after the muffed punt.

Really tired of seeing Hoke clapping on the sidelines. He should have his foot up some asses.

I'm so disappointed and angry. This year is a colossal setback.

Ohio State game will be a disaster. Today's boos were nothing.

At least Brandon erected a big electronic sign outside the stadium.

This is so gross. I'm glad to see young guys getting PT at least.

Coaching staff gets an F. Someone misses a block completely on EVERY SINGLE play. It's a joke.

All the disappointment over where this team is aside, I am happy for the players and coaches that they got the win yesterday. For all the scrutiny, the players have not seemed to quit on the season, and Hoke has maintained his composure pretty well.

One of the things that makes this year such a bummer is that I really WANT Hoke to do well. He definitely seems like a good dude. Of course that's the same reason many of us probably fear that he lacks the killer instinct to make some necessary changes to his staff.

Yeah, I've tried my best to direct my frustration towards the coaches and not the players. I know it's Northwestern, but the offensive line looked...*better.* I liked the Derrick Green/Deveon Smith combination. Both guys are more direct than Toussaint and they get to/through the line of scrimmage quicker. I thought Green had some opportunities to get some bigger runs but overall I was pretty happy with him. Smith looked pretty good too. Once again, I'm not sure the coaching staff put them in the best position to succeed with the play calls.

The call to go for it in the red zone confuses me just because of how conservative and stupid they've been this year. Penn State, they had plenty of opportunities to do the same thing and messed it up. Part of me was like "why now?" I actually like the aggressive "we're going for the win aspect of the call" but that actual play call was terrible when you consider how many times it had failed before.

Desmond called out the Michigan coaching staff on Game Day yesterday. It was pretty great.

Howard usually equivocates on national TV, but he really let the staff have it yesterday.  Good for him.

One thing I noticed yesterday was that Northwestern was selling out to stop the read option, i.e. any designed scrambles from Gardner.  Since that is pretty much the only way that Michigan has gained yardage via the run for the past month, this was a logical approach.

Yet Borges continued to attempt the read option, particularly on third and short, for the entire first half with terrible results.

The fact that Michigan didn't convert a single third down until OT was telling.

I actually think Gardner is much better than he's shown recently.  The OL has given him the yips, both in terms of fleeing the pocket prematurely as well as throwing too late (if that makes any sense).  As the broadcaster said countless times yesterday, Northwestern DBs and LBs broke on the ball after diagnosing the play, and probably dropped 4-5 INTs.  They also made several other athletic plays to break up another bunch of passes.  It spoke in part to the athleticism and intelligence of the Northwestern players, but it also spoke to Gardner's confidence and decision-making, as he telegraphed a good number of those plays.

A win is a win, and I actually think they have a chance next week against Iowa (despite our poor history of performance in Iowa City), but they've got to be less predictable on offense.  In short, hopefully this will be Borges' last away B1G game as Michigan's OC.

Basically, that youth/inexperience is not a sustainable excuse.

Coaches haven't gotten best out of players, no signs of improvement with a rotating cast of interior lineman.  Wasting offensive talent at other positions due to staff's inability to get OL to function properly.  Coaches are responsible for the identity and character of the team, and this Michigan team is demonstrating neither.

Other than that, he was very complimentary of the program.

This study from mgoblog really sheds some light on our interior line issues

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/five-star-offensive-linemen-brief-history

Even elite prospects take time. I'm still concerned about Borges given his inability to adjust, but I found this little study to be pretty encouraging.

If Borges isn't gone next year, alumni are going to go nuts. People want to see heads roll, and heads should roll. This offense is a disgrace, and I see no evidence that coaching is part of the solution.

10 first downs and 158 total yards of offense.

That's bad, right?  I mean.... even in the Big Ten... that's really bad.

What an utterly disappointing season.

BFeldmanCBS #Michigan is ranked No. 100 in rushing now. Have #Wolverines ever been anywhere close to that far down in rushing?

Even when we had Rich Rod, we could run the football, though a vastly different style from the traditional Power-O. Let's also not completely exonerate the D. I think it's still far from where it needs to be physically. However, 4 turnovers, but get outgained by like 300 yards. Just. I don't even.

I give this defense a pass on almost everything. They're doing all the lifting and the offense just keeps finding new ways to make it harder on them. If the offense was any good, I think you'd see a big improvement on an already-good D. Yes, there have been some issues, but that's true of any offense/defense. I just think the ineptitude of the offense and it's negative effect on the D cannot be overstated.

Michigan's 5-star recruit Jabril Peppers indicates he will take officials to other schools.

Says he's still committed to Michigan, but doesn't know if Hoke will be around so is checking out other schools just in case.

Great.

In my opinion, the "style" of offense isn't the issue.

Where Borges is falling down dramatically is in the ability to a) develop talent, and b) adjust gameplans to match player strengths.

Outside of Jeremy Gallon, it's hard to notice a single offensive player that has gotten better over the last three years.  The lack of improvement this season is embarrassing and unacceptable.  Gardner is a wonderful talent, and I give him credit for cutting down on turnovers in the second half of the season, but that has come along with diminished confidence, physical pummeling, and now (seemingly) some hesitancy in decision-making.

The line has been a season-long disaster -- mental mistakes, technique sloppiness, and complete lack of strength and/or ability to use leverage.  Lewan and Schofield have held their own, but it's difficult to say where they've improved.

The receivers?  Funchess can't/won't block, and now has the dropsies.  Chesson is a decoy.  Butt seems to be open just about every play, but Gardner is only focused on Gallon or Funchess (i.e. the primary read) and never progresses to him.

RB is a chicken/egg story.  Don't want to impact Green/Smith's confidence by getting them mashed, but I think they stuck with Toussaint too long when it became apparent that he shifted to an East/West runner instead of a North/South runner due to OL ineptitude.

I'd like to see the "big boy" football as much as the next guy, but it has been Borges' complete inability to play to the strengths of his players that has sunk Team 134.

I agree that it is as much about execution and developing players as it is about system. I just don't want the hunt for an OC, which I hope occurs, to be limited to a certain type of offense.

The decision to go for 2 was absolutely the right call. They, especially Gardner, had very little left in the tank. I doubt that they would have been able to keep up in OT. The D didn't look very good at all and struggled to keep contain on the read option (thanks Frank Clark). What are you going to do...great fight.

Great college game today. Loved the effort by Michigan, especially Gardiner playing hurt and still making big plays. Hopefully this keeps the Buckeyes out of the running for the BCS title game. Their defense sucks.

Gardner was tremendous today.

Was anyone else blown away by the o line's performance? Did we turn a corner? It was exciting to see green and especially smith gaining yards up the middle. Forgot what that looked like!

If the o line can make a jump next year, I think Gardner becomes more consistent. Huge year for the program, obviously, and I'm trying to think positive.

I'm pleased to see on various blogs (e.g., mgoblog) that most fans support Hoke's decision to go for 2.

Very gallant effort by Gardner and the O.

Like the call to go for two, though Gardner was hobbled and the read/option wasn't viable in that situation.

Proud of the way they competed today. Both the OL and DL need a lot of work.

I really hope that Jake Butt develops into every bit the star he's shown glimmers of being.

Agreed. I'm also intrigued by de'veon smith
