Nick Bellore went undrafted and was signed by the Jets anyway. You could say that Ryan overruled the scouts and that was fucked up, or you could say that they were confident they could get both players and it was a smart move.

I understand the point of the story, but it doesn't exactly strike the nerve that was intended.

I read the book and they were not confident that they would get Bellore.  Also the scouts all hated McKnight and were incredibly mad that an unrate player they didn't see as even a free agent signing got drafted because Rex had joked with Sanchez about drafting Sanchez's buddy.

Interestingly they really wanted to draft Jimmy Smith (who Rex loved) and let Cromartie leave in free agency but had to take Wilkerson (who Rex loved) when Baltimore drafted Smith.

The book doesn't tell you who had final say in personnel matters but Rex was clearly a loud and influential voice at the table.

From Coach Bill's press conference this morning, courtesy of Jeff Howe:

Out of absolutely nowhere, Bill Belichick took a hilarious shot at the Jets this morning at his initial news conference of Week 14.

[Re: Cleveland:] "I was there for five years," Belichick said. "It was five important years in my life, for myself, my family and all that. Obviously, we've all moved on, and I have a job to do here and that's where my loyalty is, is to Robert (Kraft), the Patriots organization and this football team. So it's no different than how I feel, honestly, about the Colts, or the Lions or the Broncos. I feel differently about the Jets. We won't put them in that category.

... Belichick famously quit the Jets in 2000 to take a job with the Patriots, and the two organizations have shared a cold-blooded rivalry for more than two decades. Belichick's dig at the Jets this morning was the latest example. It was clearly a joke, but it was a funny shot nonetheless.

This offense was beyond unwatchable, which was good because they were blacked out for home games

The good old days.

The Patriots finished the season with a record of 1-15, the worst record in franchise history. They finished last in the AFC East division and dead last in the NFL. Notably, they lost a nationally-televised game to the Washington Redskins in which they were down 9–0 before the Redskins even ran an offensive play. The Redskins' two first-quarter scores came on a Kurt Gouveia fumble return for a touchdown, and the Patriots snapping the ball out of the end zone for a safety.[1] The announced crowd for the game, played in a driving rain, was 22,286.

The Patriots’ final game of the season vs. the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants drew a sellout crowd to Foxboro, but over 40,000 fans were rooting for the visitors, as tickets to Giants home games are nearly impossible to come by for non-season ticket holders.

The Patriots’ negative-265 point-differential (181 points scored, 446 points surrendered) was the worst total of the 1990s.[2] It is notable that like the previous season’s Dallas Cowboys, the Patriots played only three teams with non-winning records - divisional rivals the Colts and Jets plus one game against the Phoenix Cardinals - all season.[3]

The 1990 Patriots and 1981 Baltimore Colts are the only NFL teams since 1940 to have eleven losses during which they never led in one season.[4]

The Jets beat the Pats this year.

Of course they needed the Refs to help...but still.
What I have liked about the Pats during the BB era is that every year they seem to be playing their best football down the stretch (except for 2009), the Jets have fallen off a cliff in their last three games, outscored 79-20 by the Bills, Ravens and Dolphins (nine of which have a winning record). That is a huge indictment of Rex and his staff.

I am trying to think of another NFL unit in my football watching history as inept as the 2013 Jets offense, and I can't.

They're not even the NFL's worst offense this season. That honor belongs to Jacksonville, and it's not even close.

The Jags' D held the Titans to 218 total yards and forced 7 combined TOs in the wins vs. Tennessee and Cleveland. Their recent improvement from historically bad to merely relatively bad wasn't driven by any sort of real improvement on the offensive side of the ball.

Its getting pretty close between the two according to weighted DVOA and Id wager the Henne led Jaguars have been better.

I sat through that 1990 Patriots season along with 5 of my friends as season ticket holders.

The one and only year they were coached by Rod "I'm proud of my men/cigar store indian" Rust. Started out 1-0 too, it was all downhill from there.

We got our tickets in 1984 and had them up until 1990, we threw in the towel after that.

That team was just awful on so many levels.

Sitting through that season makes me appreciate the current edition that much more.

I agree. The pleasure I get out of that video is not the crap Geno is getting.

It's the years of pain the douche (anyone who wishes ACL tear on a player, nevermind a rookie is a douche) has already endured and will continue to endure as a Jets fan.

The main thing I remember from the 1990 Pats was poor old Steve Grogan trying to play through a pinched nerve in his neck...he wore this huge neck brace, didn't look fit enough for a touch football game in the front yard, let alone the NFL. Every time he got hit I was afraid he'd never walk again.

KennyFP has already expressed it best, and there's no need to best the circumlocution or the circumference of his remarks...but I would add that it is pretty damn hard to criticize RR for this...a seventh rounder?? BB has overruled 2nd rounders, to my knowledge, and although he has screwed up, it's not a final stripe of loss...

RR is a superb defensive coach...perhaps the best in the league from game to game...whether he can do better is very much an open debate.

He's obviously not being criticized for Bellore. It's simply an example refuting the idea he has no responsibility for the Jets' groceries -- i.e. "Anyone who questions Ryan’s influence in the draft room...."

I went to that Redskins game and it was even worse than presented. 22,000 fans, and if I had to guess, 15,000 were Redskin fans that drove up from DC as it was back when people wanted to see the Skins play. It was a shitty, shitty day, and the Skins scoring twice before the Pats offense saw the field made for the longest 3-hour sporting experience of my life.

I went to a Stanford game in Autzen in 1999 where Stanford was down 14-0 before the offense took the field. Oregon three play drive to start (if I recall), then fumble on the kickoff return, one play drive touchdown, 14-0, offense hasn't even seen the field. The Akili Smith/Jed Weaver years. We lost 63-28 and it wasn't all that close.

Watching that Jets fan ranting and raving is even more comical in that nobody around him seems to give a shit.

I guess ranting and raving like that at Jets games is a pretty common sight.

His comment about watching this shit for 30 years; why torture yourself like that for 30 years?

In those 30 years, they've been to four AFCCG's and really had no shot in any of them and zero, as in none, Super Bowls.

Must be a glutton for punishment.

My suggestion is to run his head down to the local fix it shop in town and get that loose screw tightened.

I'm not sure this is true anymore after watching the Jags' offense last night versus one the best defenses in the NFL. Would the Jets, had they played the Texans this week, rush for 149 yards, throw three touchdown passes, convert 18 first downs, and commit zero turnovers? Considering how dreadful they've been over the past month, it seems unlikely.

Yeah, cherry-picking, but JAX has scored 21.6 points per their last 5 games, and the Jets have averaged 9.8. Jacksonville now has scored 12 more points on the season with one extra game played and has 4 more TDs scored. In yards JAX is 32nd and NYJ is 30th. DVOA before this week has Jacksonville at -30.2% (likely to increase) and NYJ at -28.1%. Jacksonville is still worse by most measures but the Jets are falling fast.

I'm guessing uncomfortable, with a pinch of "why won't an usher or a fan shut this down?"

I asbsolutely love how they are one of the three or four worst teams in football and could likely be picking outside of the top 10. They can't even rebuild well.

Let's see how this prediction is working out almost 2 months later:
  • vs Pitt: W (4-2) > LOSS (3-3)
  • vs NE: W (5-2) > WIN (4-3)
  • at Cincy: L (5-3) > LOSS (4-4)
  • vs NO: L (5-4) > WIN (5-4)
  • at Buff: W (6-4) > LOSS (5-5)
  • at Balt: L (6-5) > LOSS (5-6)
  • vs Miami: W (7-5) > LOSS (5-7)
The two divisional losses at Buffalo and at home to Miami are real killers. And for upcoming games, I'll stick with the original prediction (updated W-L record):
  • vs Oak: W (6-7): Raiders travelling to Jersey for an early 1pm game is just the ticket to break the losing streak
  • at Car: L (6-8): Another road blowout loss seems inevitable
  • vs Clev: W (7-8): Weeden is not beating the Jets on the road
  • at Miami: L (7-9): Miami always plays well vs. Jets at home, playoff-hunting or not
So a lot closer to my original camp prediction of 6-10 than the more optimistic 9-7 record that happened right after the Falcons win.

7-9 should net somewhere in the 11th~16th pick range, where Idzik will be pressured to either pick another QB, or at a skilled position.

A middling record, no playoffs, and a genuine QB crisis is a pretty good early gift from Santa.

You mean since I predicted Jets will win vs. Oakland while no one else did on this board?

By that I mean Stich and I discussed it and I thought the Jets would win. I also had them as part of my 5 team parlay that hit this weekend at -3. I've had a really shitty month so far (but I'll be single soon ladies) so I need my ego stroked.

Slipped under radar Sunday: Geno Smith set #Jets record for most passing yards by a rookie (2,475), surpassing Mark Sanchez (2,444).

I'm a little disappointed in you guys not mocking the Jets for that hilarious play on Sunday where Ed Reed came flying in and collided with Cromartie, sending the two of them sprawling and the OAK receiver for a 48 yard TD. That could maybe happen to any team, but what makes it especially Jets-like is that Cromartie now has a concussion because of that and may miss this week.

As much as Jets have done a great job drafting Richardson, Wilkerson, etc., there have been some really painful misses (to be fair, like a lot of other teams). Stephen Hill is quickly becoming one of them.

As pointed out on Mike & Mike and yesterday, Hill was taken the pick before Alshon Jeffrey. Oops. This is to say nothing about the rumor floated by a beat reporter earlier this year that Rex wanted to take Russell Wilson there and was overruled. I want that to be true.

I realize you could identify a better player taken after basically any high draft pick, but it's more satisfying to point it out when it's the Jets.

I've never heard the Russell Wilson to the NYJ before.  I do think where you are drafted matters.  I think there is no way he has the success in NY that he is having in Seattle right now.  He'd be light years better than Sanchize and Smith though.

To add on your last sentence, the two WR taken before Hill were A.J. Jenkins (bust) and Brian Quick (bust), and the two after were Jeffrey (hit) and Ryan Broyles (bust). WR's tough.

So the claim is that Rex wanted to draft Russell in the second round about a month after they extended Sanchez? It's hard to buy.

EDIT: I do have some empathy for Rex if Rex decided at some point in 2011 that Sanchez was toast but he had to continue toeing the company line because Tanny had the final call.

I believe the rumor sources back to a former Jets player and current radio broadcaster named Greg Buttle (see http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/did-rex-ryan-try-to-draft-russell-wilson/).

The NY Post ran a story that a Jets scout wanted him in Round 3, but Seattle took him first (see http://nypost.com/2013/12/08/russell-wilson-nearly-was-a-jet/).

Sanchez extension was a cap move only and did not signify that they had confidence in him

Now that Jets are out of the playoffs, a quick survey:
  • If you were the Jets GM, would you fire Rex?
  • As a Pats fan, would you like Rex be fired?
  • Regardless of our opinions, will Rex be fired?
For the record, I've voted yes, no, and no.
