It's actually more my own perception than anything I've read, so I probably shouldn't have made the point so definitely. At the 2010 World Cup, only one foreign-based player started a match for Spain (Fernando Torres), and at Euro 2012, only 2 (Torres and David Silva), and they didn't start every match. Then I read bits like this in http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/tacticsandanalysis/id/1521?cc=5901]Michael Cox's column[/url]:

You could just as easily say the selection is based on merit, and for players like Xavi and Iniesta of course it is, but why so for someone like Busquets? As Morgan's Magic Snowplow said, he's not going anywhere- but why? Javi Martinez is better, imo, and since they're similar players I think it'd be worth trying Martinez in Busquets' role.

Not trying to imply it's a big conspiracy, just that the domestic-based players probably have a subtle leg-up by playing in their home country. Then again, that seems to have worked out pretty good for Spain these last few years.
For Euro 2008, there were more Liverpool players on Spain's squad than either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

At that time, English teams ware dominating the European Cup, so top players went to the EPL to try and win it.  Since then, the balance of power has shifted, and a lot of those players were brought back to Spain by the Big 2,

Yeah, I claimed conspiracy during the 2010 WC cuz Fabregas wasn't playing when I felt he deserved a spot in the XI and I hated the decision to employ a double pivot. I think Mata deserves to play now (though I'm happy to see Cesc play, obviously ;) ). I consider Cesc to be a pretty "immediate" player too though. The whole Busquets vs Martinez debate is interesting. Busquets has the advantage of playing with the other three midfielders, which I think is a valid argument in his favor. I guess the same argument could be used for Cesc vs Mata. It's a really complicated situation.

Germany has something similar, IMO. Germany plays a ton of players from Bayern even though there are plenty of worthy players from Dortmund. I guess there isn't the same home bias with Khedira and Özil starting too, but there is definitely a lot of preference to a certain club. Spain has a tremendous Barca contingent, and it's pretty hard to overturn that at the moment.

But yeah, I don't know. When you've got so much talent, there are going to be decisions that are challenged.

3-0 Nigeria at the half, Tahiti has been surprisingly fun to watch play. Chong Hue just nutmegged two Nigerians.

Nigeria is playing the ball at the feet too much, not enough passing, and kind of letting Tahiti attack and then trying to counter. It's a bit BS since they could really just dominate possession if they passed more. For instance they had a two on none with only the keeper to beat, and the guy took it in alone instead of passing, and the Tahiti keeper saved it

Also, Adrian Healy is good, but whoever the color guy is talks too much. Healy needs to know when to cut him off. When Chong Hue nutmegged two Nigerians, the color guy had some long nonsense story and Healy should have cut him off. It was an awesome play

edit-Color guy is Keller. Expected better from him.

I've been watching a lot of EPL and int'l matches on sky or BBCSport, and usually the color guys don't say much, sometimes I forget there even is one. It's awesome.

We belong!  We belong!

Goal difference for Tahiti may well be -20 by the end, but that's still a big moment.  Good for them.

Holy shit...that is an awesome moment for Tahiti. Good for them.

The group celebration was also awesome - the whole team rowing while on their knees.

Wonderful moment - and the crowd was great in appreciation.

Nigeria better give up on the diving in the box. Short of Tahiti kicking someone's head off their neck, the ref is not giving Nigeria a penalty.

If Nigeria plays like this against Spain, they will lose 5-0. They are not taking Tahiti seriously and while they have WAY more talent they are not playing the way you need to against good competition.

And as I type, Nigeria gets a 4th. They really do have much, much, much more talent.

Well, Tahiti has a population of ~175,000.  Nigeria's population is ~170,000,000.

There are literally .001 Tahitians for every one Nigerian.

These sort of arguments make me uncomfortable, given that Jamaica has beaten the US in some important games and we have 300 million to their <3 million!

I understand why Nigeria is going to run this score up in the last 15 minutes but it's too bad because Tahiti gave great effort.

Anyone fancy a guess at how many Spain will score tonight against Tahiti?

Some random odds being made available are 8/1 on 10-0, only 12/1 on 12-0, 50/1 on 18-0 and 100/1 on 20 or 21-0

Myself, I'm going going with 9-0 as I don't think Spain would want to embarrass them.

So far, not quite 20-0. Spain seems a bit complacent.

Kind of a no-win for them, though.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I think the end of the game could get ugly. The ability to play 90 minutes with consistency is such a huge difference between amateurs and pros....and the pros in question happen to be sorta good.

Spain should go 75% in the first half, then in the second half only shoot from outside the box

The other tough thing is Tahiti played Monday and is playing their regulars, whereas Spain is almost entirely B-team, who haven't played at all. Tahiti will be dead tired in the second half

This is kind of fascinating, I just keep assuming Spain is about to put one in and then they keep finding ways to screw it up. It should be 4 or 5-0.

I appreciate that it's a thrill for Tahiti to be here, and I'm all for world tournaments being truly representative, and I'm sure Tahiti's goal against Nigeria was a historical highlight and that guy who scored will never have to buy dinner in Tahiti again, but I wonder if Oceania really belongs here.

They don't, it's kind of silly. And yes, I cannot believe he's still making enthusiastic goal calls. I thought the first one was a bit much but understandable, and that would be it.

4-0 now, at 39'. If this were a fight, and I was the ref, I would stop it.

Just curious.  How did Tahiti get the Confed Cup berth, and not NZ?

New Zealand managed to lose in the semis of the 2012 OFC Nations Cup.  Not to Tahiti, but to New Caledonia.  Tahiti beat the Solomon Islands in the other semi then went on to win the final.

NZ apparently partied hard the night before the New Caledonia match.

FIFA has New Caledonia the second highest rated nation in OFC; Tahiti is third.

Hat trick for Torres, who can now add Tahiti to his impressive list of hat tricks for Spain, alongside San Marino and New Zealand.
