So Lezzar and Alston get their 3rd Star and BC is now again in the Rivals Top 30.

I see #32.

You understand that the rankings only include each team's top 20 players, so BC is done, while all those teams within 100 or 200 points with 14 or 17 recruits are going to add points, right? 25% of the rivals 250 are still uncommitted. Those are all 4-star guys who are going to go somewhere; schools like UCLA and WVU, and USC and USC. The lowest ranking guy on that list adds 105 points to the school he signs with.

BC should end up somewhere around 45-50.

Yes I understand but thanks for the lesson. I said so in my last post that I didn't expect them to finish here. The fact is that this class is settling into being the best class in some time even coming off a 2 win season. Hopefully, they build on this year's success on the field and keep the momentum.

They also need to hold onto this class which I think is more likely given the 7 wins.

Well in fact as of today the class is identical to Spaz' first class (2010),  and ranks behind Spaz' second class (2011)

Yes, as I said about six months ago, comparable to, if a little bit worse than 2010 and 2011.

Which was his first class and was coming off years of success and bowl appearances (including 2 ACCCGs). Last year BCs class was ranked 88. The year before 64. In 2008 before the coaching change they were ranked 33. It's all relative.

What are you talking about? Spaziani's first class followed a year in which BC's class was ranked #70, and he moved you guys to #47 and then to #38.

You wonder why I call you out for being Pollyanna, but it's worse than that, you just keep changing your tune.

That class you mention was still way back at 38. There were way too many 2 star reaches at positions of need. When BC was successful it was ranking in 20s under TOB. That's where this class is going to finish. Particularly of note is the early success BC has had with its targets.

No I don't. Take a look at my posts. I admit that I see things through maroon and gold colored glasses and have used the same term to describe myself.

I just wonder why you care.

I am happy with the class because overall it has depth and has some good looking players in positions of need (QB, DL and RB).

My point was probably inarticulately made. I've been consistent with my opinion that this is a solid class coming off of the year we did. Next year will be key.

But don't get me wrong. I vote with my wallet. I was happy with the Bates and Addazio hires. For the first time in many years I made my Flynn Fund donation and season tix purchase. Just because I don't jump up and down and criticize on a message board doesn't mean I don't hold the program accountable.

So it looks like Andre Williams will be making the rounds at ESPN today.  I suspect that this may be impacted by the Winston news but we shall see.  I like that Bates is using one of BC's strengths (its alumni network) to push the program.  In case you didn't see it, it seems that Bates is lobbying for the Heart of Dallas Bowl by playing up the Cotton Bowl History and appealing to Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings (who is also a BC grad and former football player).  It looks like a long shot but I like the effort.

Anyway, here's today's AW (and Addazio) schedule:

Williams Heads to ESPN Studios Thursday, Dec. 5

Dec. 4, 2013

Boston College senior running back Andre Williams, one of five finalists for Walter Camp Player of the Year and one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award as the nation's premier running back, will travel to Bristol, Conn., and ESPN Studios tomorrow - Thursday, Dec. 5 - for a full day of interviews and appearances on several ESPN platforms.

Williams, who will be joined by head coach Steve Addazio for College Football Daily taping at noon, begins the day with a live appearance on ESPN's First take at 10:50 and concludes the day with a live appearance on College Football Live with Scott Van Pelt at 5:45 p.m. His live Sportscenter hit is scheduled for 11:40 a.m. and he will join ESPN New York's Mike Lupica (BC '74) Show live at 12:45 p.m.
The complete schedule is listed below. Times and appearances are subject to change pending breaking news.

Not sure why he is wasting his time barking up the Dallas tree when tie in is the Big Ten and CUSA teams.

Because the Big Ten won't have enough teams.  If Michigan State goes to the BCS as a second team, they are short 2 teams. Also, ESPN "owns" this bowl and ESPN has tons of BC connections.

Dallas actually has a decent alumni base and it's easy to get to from Boston.  It sounds like they put a plan in place to assure and rally attendance.

The bowl strategy seems to be a long term one.  Given that ANY bowl is ok this year, find one where BC might be able to shake some of its "doesn't travel well" rep.

The only problem with the recruiting class is that the last good bunch of guys have all been "Trust the Staff" types after they began the class with Outlow, Landry, Wade....One would have thought they'd finish stronger. Past that the class has been pretty solid.

Tevin Montgomery has left the team; DL is the absolute monster priority for the Dazzler, weakest position on the roster.

Ok ... Last "fanboy" recruiting post for awhile :)

The good news is that 2 of those "trust the staff" guys had really good seasons and received the "3rd star".  I am particularly interested in seeing what Alston can do at RB.

TOBy did crack the top 25, but I believe that was only once,  Rivals has nothing pre 2002 in the history, but this is the history of TOBY's rankings.

2003 was an insanely good class  (in the end it may have been the best class in the country) , but on the other hand it was "overrated" a bit by Rivals as they consider Dorian "pie charts" Bryant as the #2 player in that class.

Here were the O'Brien rankings

2002 43rd
2003 24th
2004 53rd
2005 49th
2006 37th

You're absolutely right. It just seemed we stopped being in on better guys when the on the field results improved.

Hopefully the ratings translate onto the field.

Any idea where ND finished those years? And what was the head to head record during that stretch? It's all about getting a top 50 class and coaching them up. I think this staff is pretty damn good at doing that. This program is heading in the right direction.

If you want BC in Dallas you have to root for MSU tomorrow night to solidify 2 B1G BCS slots and freeing the slot up. If they get it looks like they will play Rice. It would be against a Houston based school in the Cotton Bowl stadium 29 years to the day another BC team played a Houston based school with BC having a national award winner with a double number headlining its offense. 22/44. Pretty cool stuff. Great marketing and RECRUITING tool.

So looks like BC added a home game against Colorado St. as it's final non conference game next year. Not bad.

After a season with only 6 home games, BC will have 7 home games and an "away" game at Gillette vs. UMass.

anyone here recent rumors on BC bowl option scenarios (depending I guess on ACCCG and SECCG results)?

I suppose Duke could beat FSU but I think the ACC is only getting one bid after Clemson lost last week. So the odds of BC getting an ACC tie in bid are lower. If they do, it'd be Shreveport on NYE. If not, the Heart of Dallas and Texas Bowls are possible landing spots.

Top 2 rushers in the nation. BCS member opponent. Location is Hooterville. 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
When I was still in school we went to Independence, Gator, and Sugar. Indy Bowl was easily the second best trip (Gator was played in Gainesville that year because of stadium renovations but all of the other stuff was still in JAX so it was a clusterfuck) and was frankly close to Sugar as far as the fun went. We had an absolute blast. Of course we were coming off of 2-8-1 and weren't spoiled by winning yet so it was all an adventure. I was in the band and we worked out a deal with a local club (Cowboys) and went there every night in the buses. They had a crawfish bake for us one night, bud girls one night, and something another night that I can't remember. And the game was early enough on Dec 31 that we were back to the hotel, showered, and out early enough in the night to have some fun.
That was the trip espn called us the most obnoxious college band in the country. Good times, good times.
I'd go back to Shreveport. Probably before I went back to the Sugar for the 3rd time to be perfectly honest.

If BC can make it a little easier for fans to get there I may try to make it.  I think the match up worked out pretty well.

Not to bring up TOB and the memories that come with him...but apparently he is a very strong negotiator.  This is from an article about a possible Mack Brown buyout at Texas:

Most coaches received at least 50 percent of the money that was left on their contracts with a couple of exceptions, including Purdue's Danny Hope, who received only $600,000 of the more than $4 million he had left (15 percent).
A review of buyouts given to coaches last year could find only one coach who was given a smaller percentage of a buyout than what Brown would receive.
That was North Carolina State's Tom O'Brien, who was owed $4.5 million but the school negotiated to give him only $200,000, which represented less than 5 percent of the money left on his contract.

I have no idea if this kid is any good, but I can't imagine anyone playing worse than Rettig this year in a system that involves so little risk-taking from the QB.

Also, first black QB at BC since...Willie Hicks?
Interesting development. Looks like Muschamp has officially released him to play wherever he wants. I think he would be a nice bridge to Wade as a RS Freshman.

Do you guys have any thoughts on the job Ben Albert has done this year with the d-line?  Rumor is he could be a candidate for the open URI head coach position.

According to the Twitter machine (Mike Pucci from 247), BC has its first recruit in the 2015 class, Anthony Palazzolo, 4 Star OT from Connecticut.

Not a bad start.

Two things:

1. The commitment has been confirmed by multiple sources.

2. The roundtable is next week before the Clemson game. They are offering 2 extra tix to the game or an upcoming hockey game if you attend. I got the invite over the weekend.

So looks like ALJ is out for the game for a violation of team rules.

Heading down to Shreveport for the game. I really don't know what to expect but I can't think of a better place to spend New Years Eve. Ahem.

Good luck on that one!! You must be the only person other than the official BC contingent at that game. Now you have actual credibility to walk up to Bates and the group and say "this is why we don;t travel well!!". Have fun.

We need to do a sosh BC bash sometime. Problem is the bball season is over so I don't know when we would do a game watch.

And here comes the blowout. Our secondary couldn't stop a pee wee football team's passing game. Lots of work to be done in the next few years.

Honestly the secondary has held up better than I expected this year,  So many games this year where I see a team only throw 1 or 2 deep balls against BC (and the vast majority have been successful).

Problem in this game is the vaunted OL has been abused by the front 7 of Arizona.  So Williams has been completely irrelevant

Rettig has played his ass off, and is killing himself out there,   but you had the horrible missed block by Patchan that killed one drive (and got chase hurt pretty good).  And no BC is basically forced to throw every down, and Arizona is sitting back and waiting for it, leading to the pick 6.

If you looked at the year end stats the thing that struck me was how bad the D performed in 3rd down efficiency. It was over 40%. That is attributable to a very weak secondary playing in a penetrating front 7 defense. If you can get the ball away quickly you can carve that D scheme up. Arizona has done a good job doing that.

All part of the building/rebuilding process. They are not a first division team yet. They can be there in 2 years or so.
