The UCLA site lists him as a FS/CB, though he started out as a WR.

How about this quote:

"These last few years, I felt like I've had an opportunity to leave my mark on the program, and that's in the form of being a great special teams player. But I'll take it how I can get it."

Guess that explains the pick!

And the quest to put together the greatest special teams squad ever assembled continues...

Why would they trade up a few spots to get him? Were they afraid someone else was going to take him?

Any info regarding the terms of the trade?

Presumably because they wanted him and thought someone else might be in on him.

Reality is that most 5th round picks aren't going to make the pats roster...a gunner might, though. The Pats special teams aces are getting older.

Leave it to the Pats to draft a kid who there is no info on in the draft.

The Patriots trade their 2008 sixth-round pick (197th overall) and 2008 seventh-round pick (238th overall) for the Buccaneers' 2008 fifth-round selection (153rd overall).

That leaves the team with just one more selection today -- 160th overall.
I think Reiss might have fucked up - TB is listed as in NE's slot at #160 (unless, of course, ESPN is wrong).

According to NFL.COM, the Patriots last pick in the draft is their 6th. Looks like they also traded their 7th rounder to TB in this deal? You have to wonder why the urgency but I'm willing to accept the possibility that BB and Pioli know something I don't :)

I've seen plenty of teams use a pick on a return guy. I have never seen anything like what the Pats are doing today though - drafting two special teams gunners who have no hope of being regulars on anything but ST.

This is a godawful waste.

Beioli cannot be stopped.

It's a special teams revolution.

EDIT - Hey, at least Brad Seely is happy...

EDIT2 -
Reiss said:
CORRECTION ON TRADE: There was an error in the announcement of the Patriots' trade with Tampa Bay. The Patriots sent their 2007 fifth-round pick (160) and 2007 seventh-round pick (238) to Tampa Bay for the Buccaneers' fifth-round pick (153). That leaves the Patriots with just their sixth-round pick (197).

I think what these draft decisions mean is that there's a chance Kelley will be taking DS's spot as a full-time WR.

I think you need to consider the possibility they have an idea what their roster looks like and who might be able to make it. These guys have earned the ultimate in deference on these things, imo.

Everyone thought they were nuts for picking Matt Cassell, who had about 10 snaps in college and played special teams as a senior. But that pick worked out great, too.

Yeah but you replace your ST coverage guys with replacements off another squad's practice squad or a UDFA. You don't draft guys who have no hope of playing anything other than ST, unless it is for their leg.

It is just kind of dopey.

where the darn libs live
Someone is going to nab Colt Brennan and will be very very happy. I strongly belive he will be the best QB to come out of this draft by far. His accuracy is incredible, and his arm strength is enough to make all the throws, though he is definetly no Jamarcus. HE possess awesome leadership skills, and his football smarts are phenomenal.
The only people I've ever met who love Colt Brennan are people who either went to Hawaii or are from Hawaii. A bartender who used to work for me used to splooge all over Brennan saying he should be a first round pick and he'd be a star in the league.

I think Brennan could be a decent player. But he's no where close to the best QB in this draft.

Chicago either has more faith in Grossman than any sane person on the planet, or they're hoping to pull someone out of another org.

Yes because none of the Patriots' "out-of-the-box" ideas has ever panned out in the past.

Wait, who is the 2nd STer? Wilhite?

I've actually really liked their 2nd day thus far. I think Wilhite and Crable provide some nice depth with good ceilings, and I'm warming up to the O'Connell pick. I think it's tough to evaluate the Slater pick until we see what they want to do with him. It looks like they just drafted an athlete.

Gerbil, I'd relax. This team doesn't waste draft picks, and they don't waste 3rd rounders on ST gunners. I'm sure they have other plans.

Have you ever coached ST or made personnel decisions in the NFL to make such a definitive statement?
