After all, the B's did win the Cup on Mother's Day, so why not?

To mark the 50-year anniversary of the storied 1970 Stanley Cup® champion Boston Bruins, NHL Network OriginalsTM will debut The 1970 Bruins: Big, Bad & Bobby on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET, 50 years to the day the Bruins won the Stanley Cup®. In a rare roundtable interview, Bobby Orr, Gerry Cheevers, Phil Esposito and Derek Sanderson discuss how this band of brothers captured the hearts and minds of New England sports fans forever, and produced one of the most iconic sports moments of all-time: Orr flying through the air as he scored the Stanley Cup®-winning overtime goal in Game Four against the St. Louis Blues. Narrated by Dropkick Murphys founder and diehard Bruins fan Ken Casey, a trailer for The 1970 Bruins: Big, Bad & Bobby can be seen here.

And who would have bet on Derek Sanderson living this long?
Yes he's been clean a long time. Good for him. Apparently they were partiers, not just Derek. Hodge, Espo, Cheevers, Derek of course and a few others. The urban legend or rumor of the 5-1 lead choke in game 2 71 first round against Habs was that even though they won game 1 against Habs 3-1, they thought they didn't play well and were lucky to come out with a win. And Dryden frustrated them of course. The rumor is that they went out and partied and drank and were hungover for game 2. And that's why Tom Johnson started Eddie Johnston instead of Gerry. Who knows? I guess we'll never know. But anyway this is about the 70 Bruins and it looks pretty good. That team got me so interested in hockey because my family had moved from Fall River to Wellesley in summer of 69. Youth hockey was not played in Fall River, till 1970-71. Basketball was more popular believe it or not. But Wellesley and the Bruins got me so interested in hockey and the Bruins it became my favorite sport. They had youth hockey there from like just over 5 years old I think. I was 11 going on 12 the summer I moved. Hockey is not my favorite sport today but at age 62, that Bruins team is still my favorite pro sports team of all time. Even over 04 Red Sox or any Pats or Celts team. And baseball has been my favorite sport for years.

Kind of disappointed they didn't say a thing about Ted Green's pre season injury after being struck in the head by Wayne Maki. On the Goal Bruins album Don Earle mentions how that would hurt the team on defense. Not one word by the narrators or the players about Teddy. He was their best defensive defenseman those years from what they say.

Agreed on them not mentioning Teddy, but they managed to miss mentioning more than half the team. Novices might think the only players were Orr, Espo, Bucyk, Hodge, Cheevers, Sanderson, McKenzie, Cashman, Carlton, Westfall, and Stanfield.

I’d say most Bruins fans under 45 have no idea who Ted Green is. If they won in ‘69 he’d be a legend.

If I'm not mistaken Derek mentioned Billy Speer and Ace Bailey as the only 2 dead teammates, omitting Ted Green and Johnny Pie. Maybe it was an old interview?

By mostly showing the goals all the goalies looked inept, despite their being future hall of famers.

Yes Don Marcotte, one of the best penalty killers in the game then. Don Awrey, Rick Smith, Dallas Smith, Gary Doak, Wayne Carlton(swoop) and Eddie Johnston who played great in the nets when Gerry went down with cracked ribs in March. They also mixed the highlights up from early 60's and early 70's. They didn't start wearing the gold socks at home until the 69-70 season. Then of course in 70-71, home teams switched to white(which I never liked) and they showed a lot highlights from early to mid 70's playing the Flyers and other teams in white at home when it was supposed to be the 69-70 season highlights. Now they did show highlights from playoffs with Habs in 69 where they did wear the white sox at home.

The other thing I didn't like was the disrespect they kind of gave to the Celtics of the 60's. 11 out of 13 titles and all they said was all Boston had was the Celtics?? All????? Yes the Celtics became more popular in the 70's and 80's and I won't get into the reason why which we all know. Anyway interesting comparison. November 1970 they are selling tickets for remaining games at the Garden. My Dad, my cousin and his friend couldn't even get in the building and gave up and went home. I was disappointed but what else are you going to do. Flash forward April 1985. My friend and I are up for the Marathon and Red Sox weekend. Sunday afternoon we're driving around and we know the B's are playing the Habs in game 4 of the opening series at the Gahden. This is the height of the Larry Bird, Parrish etc.. era of the Celts. There were still tickets available and it was a great game as the Bruins came back and beat the Habs 7-6 to tie the series at 2 apiece. Could I have gotten Bruins tickets in the early to mid 70's. Heck no! And do you think I could have got Celtics playoff or even regular season tickets in April of 85??? No way. So like I was saying popularity is cyclical. The special made it look like they're still the most popular team in the area. I still think that belongs to the Red Sox though certainly people criticize the Pats less then the Sox.

As lines where all three guys scored 20+ go, Cash/Taz/Jonathan would be legit scary. Actually, even without the qualifier...

Great pic - loved that team! Plus Cash and Cherry

And checking the stats, how did O'Reilly - who couldn't get through a shift without falling down when he first came up - ever score 29 goals and 90 points in a season?!
