'19-'20 Warriors: who's left?

I thought 3/$15 was low, but Strauss had it nailed.

Based on my survey of salary cap aficionados, general managers and other basketball ops workers, I believe the Warriors will still be getting a bargain if Looney re-signs this summer. The responses were remarkably consistent. Every person I asked listed a figure in the $3 million to $5 million range. Even if the aforementioned market forces make such an affordable deal understandable, anything in that range seems like a win for the Warriors. Factor in how Looney has shown recent flashes of a mid-range game and there’s even more reason to like a multi-year deal at those prices.

Just turned 23, 7-4 wingspanned switchable big, credible handles and jump shot (miles better than, say, Tristan Thompson ever had) #27 ranked player in the NBA by RPM, .636 true shooting last year (.704 in the playoffs). Was by far the Warriors best player last year outside of Hamptons Five.

That's a great deal. A remarkable misread of the Looeny market as well by the "chattering class" on Twitter, who expected him to get double that contract or more.

That’s one of the better deals in FA so far. I saw a report that his agent said the Celtics never even reached out to him, and I figured it was because they thought he’d be out of their price range. So unless he gave the Warriors a discount, seems like a inexplicable missed opportunity by Ainge.

In a world where Bobby Portis can get $15.5M per year, what will Looney cost?
Quoting myself here, I guess, but wow. One year of Bobby Portis (or Terry Rozier) costs more than three years of Kevon Looney. Let that sink in for a minute.

Well, the Celtics would have been able to offer at most roughly the same deal. It’s not that surprising that, faced with roughly similar deals, he would have chosen to stay with what he knows.

Given Looney's contract, I can almost guarantee his hips are bad, probably impingement issues on the way to IT territory. He had earlier surgical intervention than IT so that might help, plus he doesn't rely on quickness as much as IT.

Still might be a good to great contract for the next 3 years, who knows. But there is almost no way that many GMs are dumb enough to not top that offer by quite a bit unless the medical staff had some input.

#1 rule in sales, you always make the call.

If this is true and the Agent felt like mentioning it:eek::eek::eek:

call up Bob Myers and offer Semi for Damian Jones...at least get the phone slammed down on you

Checking on the RPM, the stat aligns with the eye test, by and large.
But from that stat sheet, Klay is a net negative?! 30th best shooting guard in the league? Negative defensive value? Bizarre.

Advanced stats don’t love Klay’s defense, with the usual explanation being that he has a bit of the Avery Bradley thing going on- he’s a great on-ball defender, which stands out to most people watching games, but not great with team defense, which hurts his overall impact. He also doesn’t generate a lot of steals/blocks, which is why he rates poorly in DBPM.

Dunno Mark Murphy, but his bio says he's longtime Herald reporter covering the Cs.
jeez. It's a pretty easy sales pitch:
1. Kevon you'll start day 1 in Boston (mention Jones started over him last season and Cousins is lurking)
2. Kevon you're the age of the guys we're building this team around, so you will be a major piece to our next Championship
3. Kevon you can decide on 1yr or 2y deal
4. Kevon thanks for considering the Boston Celtics...

120 second call...probably get told no thank you, but make the damn call.

I've seen some of the smartest people do some of the dumbest things. Nothing shocks me.

D’Angelo Russell is 8 months older than Jaylen Brown and the league’s savviest organization just placed a big bet on him. I think SoSH is seriously underrating Russell’s upside.
I love this signing for the Warriors and Russell’s did take a mammoth leap last year that coincided with him physically maturing. They fill Klay’s spot until he returns when they go small with a Steph-Russ-Klay-Dray-Looney and runs teams out of the building.

Best case it all works out and they are lethal.....worse case (barring injury) is Russell becomes an extremely valuable trade asset that has to return greater than an aging Iggy and a low 1st rounder. Plus they get to fill Klay’s minutes.

Wasn’t he an RFA? The amount GSW signed him for was about the most Boston could have offered, so possibly they figured it would just get matched and didn’t want to tie up the room.

GSW add Willie Cauley-Stein and Glenn Robinson III today. They are both 25 -- still some potential upside for both. WCS in particular urged the Kings not to bring him back because he wanted a new start, so now he's got to prove himself.

GSW withdraws their QO to Quinn Cook, making him an unrestricted FA.
I'm sure he'll land with a contender somewhere. Career 42% from 3.

I'm sure cap related, as he was an appreciated role player last season, with upside.

Sigh. Godspeed, Quinn. He was besties with KD; and with the acquisition of Russell and need to pinch every penny under the hard cap, the writing was on the wall. They also just signed Ky Bowman to a two-way contract. presumably as their Santa Cruz PG project / de facto Cook replacement. Any BC fans here with some thoughts on Bowman?

I am not a BC fan but I liked what I saw of Ky in Summer League the other night. If he can improve his outside shot to make it NBA-credible, the Warriors may have found something.

Livingston waived, bringing the GSW offseason casualty total to 10 (I think, though I may have lost count).

Kevin Durant (BKN)
Andre Iguodala (MEM)
Shaun Livingston
Andrew Bogut
Jonas Jerebko
DeMarcus Cousins (LAL)
Jordan Bell (MIN)
Quinn Cook (LAL)
Damian Jones (ATL)
Marcus Derrickson

Once the Durant domino fell, the writing was on the wall for a lot of these guys; and the hard cap that kicked in with the D'Angelo S/T sealed the deal for most of them.

I mean, I supported the D'Lo move, both for the max salary slot it deftly preserved and in pure hoops terms (23 y.o., 6'-10" wingspanned PG with upside who can both spell the Splash Bros and play alongside them). And in a lot of ways I'm looking forward to the fresh start, the infusion of youth (Curry now the elder statesman of the team at 31) and being the hunter instead of the hunted. But man, losing ten guys from the team is a lot for this fanboy to process emotionally. Andre and Shaun in particular were such an integral part of the soul and identity of the dynasty, both on and off court. Sigh.

I'll probably post on all the new additions shortly, but in the meantime, possibly my favorite SDot moment, from the 2018 WCF...

I continue to be impressed by Steve Kerr
+1. My first instinct was to be somewhat disappointed in what I thought was a somewhat sheepish reaction to the issue, but I see his POV much better after his eloquent elaboration. It's easy for me as a US civilian with no public platform to say "this is not that complicated — we should stand for a free Hong Kong, and China can fvck right off." But for public figures I also see the importance of wise, measured speech, especially in areas where one is not an expert. (Basically the opposite of Tiny's approach to everything). Biting one's tongue doesn't always have to be a matter of selling out one's principles in the name of $$$; it can also be a matter of respect, humility, or compassion, somewhat akin to not telling somewhat their music recital (or school paper, or recent haircut, etc.) sucked even if you kinda thought it did. On reflection, I think Kerr's demurral is more a case of the latter, though obviously not further inflaming the issue and risking further financial damage to the league is a nice side benefit. Basically, I can't begrudge him or anyone for choosing his public battles wisely and carefully.

As long as this thread is bumped, some random thoughts on the team after last night's meaningless pre-season tilt vs. the Wolves (partly cross-posted from the non-Celtics thread)...

• Curry looks fresher and sprier than he did at the end of last season. Has scored 58 points (on 30 fga) in his 43 preseason minutes, with 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals, and a +28 net on-off. Still looks like the most positively impactful 5-on-5 on basketball player in the world, as he has been over the past five years. The team is generally transcendent when he plays, even when the other guys on the floor with him are largely scrubs. I worry about how he'll hold up physically to his crazy usage with Klay out; but if he can stay healthy (knocking wood furiously) it should be fun to watch.

• Prototypical Warriors line last night: 143 points, 34 assists, and 21 turnovers, most of them on illegal screens or crazy football passes in transition. With the Warriors' extreme youth and lack of size this season, I'd expect them to push the pace more than ever.

• Defense could be a problem this year. D'Angelo Russell, Glenn Robinson and Alec Burks are not KD, Klay and Andre; and the team overall is kinda small. Hopefully getting Looney and Willie Cauley-Stein back healthy will shore up the interior a bit.

• Marquese Chriss has impressed to the point where "Warriors vets" (which I always read as Draymond) are apparently lobbying for a roster spot for him. Live 6'-10" body on a team that needs size, with great hops and decent ball skills, plus a lot tougher and headier than I remembered. Dude did just turn 22, so maybe he's figured some things out? He didn't get owned by KAT last night, which is something. They have a free roster spot, but the hard cap makes it impossible to fill it without dumping salary. They could cut Ky Bowman — who has shown very little to date and seems to have lost the third-string PG job to Jacob Evans. But he's only on a two-way contract, and the way Chriss has looked, I suspect he could do better. That leaves Alfonzo McKinnie, whose non-guaranteed contract makes him the easiest to cut, as well-liked as he is. If he goes, it leaves Steph, Dray, Looney, Jacob Evans, and Damion Lee (and Klay) as the sole holdovers from last year.

• Defensive shortcomings aside, DLo looked a lot more comfortable tonight than in the first game v. the Lakers: 16 pts and 5 assists in his 25 minutes, with some nice flashes of growing synergy with Steph. They're gonna be really hard to contain when on the floor together, though Kerr will likely stagger their minutes to keep one of them on the floor at all times (as with CP3 and Harden in Houston).

• Jordan Poole (19 points in 21 minutes) already looks more like an NBA player than Jacob Evans did any time last year. Very sweet-looking three point stroke, with the near-total lack of conscience they'll need with Klay on the shelf.

• The Kerr-Walton-Fraser-Iguodala "Wildcat Connection" has been replaced by a new Wildcat Connection: Omari Spellman and Eric Paschall. Early times for both, but both seem impressively composed and tough for guys as young as they are. Kerr apparently picked Jay Wright's brain on both of them during their Team USA stint together. With the hard cap restricting everything this year, they're the type of guys that are gonna need to show out if the Warriors are going to stay afloat without Klay.

Warriors waive Alfonzo McKinnie and sign training camp sensation Marquese Chriss — giving them nine brand new players (out of 13, not counting Klay), and eight players under age 23.

Could be a rocky start to the season, especially with Looney and Cauley-Stein both still ailing (both expected back soon, but both will have effectively missed camp). Should be a good test for Kerr and his off-the-charts .785 career winning percentage (322-88).

I think Curry is going to do great things this season but my primary concern would be him holding up during the grind; I don’t know if he can maintain such a high level of play for 75+ games which is what they are going to need to make the playoffs. Especially given how much he has had to play over the last five years with all of the deep postseason runs. If they get off to a slow start is it even worth pushing him, given that if Klay doesn’t come back their ceiling in the playoffs is pretty low, and theoretically next year with healthy Klay and Curry and Green is a title contender in 2020-2021.

It isn’t only Durant though. It is Durant....and Klay....and Iguodala.....and Livingston.....and (injured) Looney.....and Quinn Cook. You can even include Boogie if you’d like.

I mean maybe not everyone here willing to “give them a chance” is paying attention to them over the first two games but their rotation after Curry, Draymond and D’Angelo consists of.......

Eric Paschall
Glenn Robinson Jr
Jordan Poole
Omari Spellman
Marquese Chriss
and Jacob Evans

What are we giving these guys a chance to do? I’m regret is that I didn’t fade them harder in my season prop bets.

I’m sure Curry will step up here and there.....if they win tonight it wouldn’t shock me....but this has to be a depressing outlook for Steph and Draymond to bring it every night. This is a dumpster fire waiting to happen.

Yea I liked just about all your over/under win bets. Did you get 48.5 under on GSW? I figured you were hitting that bid relentlessly.

Feel bad for Steph, has to be frustrating, you just know he's going to play his heart out. That will be his undoing. He isn't going to last the season, getting double-teamed/beaten to a pulp every night.

BTW is it a "hot take" if we thought GSW was in for a tough season weeks ago??? The Western Conf is just a beast for a team with 9-10 young, inexperienced players.

"hot take" is the most fukn overused/tired phrase in sports talk these days IMO

U47.5, U46.5 and very little on “NO to make playoffs” at +265. I didn’t want to get too involved in that division and choose fading the Clippers more than fading the Warriors by playing off the Lakers Win Total and Division Win......yeah, fading Clips looks brilliant right about now.
