The public was given perhaps the most rewatchable event in sports history: The Malice at the Palace. It is still completely unfathomable that this took place, even if there had been some warning signs in the decade leading up to it with some ugly fights that spilled into the stands. Obviously I can't even imagine what it would be like if this took place today in the age of Twitter; I think the following day would have to be some form of national holiday so everyone can focus on all the takes.

Some additional thoughts after rewatching the event today:

- Stephen Jackson deserves a lot of credit for ending up looking crazier than the guy who went into the stands to fight a fan. What is even nuttier is that later in his career he would become a highly-respected league veteran and mentor for younger players.

- Jermaine O'Neal slipping and still managing to totally K.O. a heavyset fan who runs onto the floor will never not be funny.

- Mike Breen is unintentionally hilarious calling this for ESPN, particularly when he said after the melee winded down "Artest...he has a look in his eye that is just scary."

- A lot of players took a ton of unnecessary heat after this event, when most of them went into the stands to break-up the fight and stop Artest, but ended up getting punched by fans.

- I remember Bill Simmons once saying what it must of been like to be the fan that Artest punches first. Remember, Artest ended up going after the wrong guy and not the fan who threw the cup. So this fan was just sitting near courtside, watching the game for two hours and all of a sudden Ron Artest in your lap, punching you. That would be like watching Jaws in a theater and at the end of the movie, Jaws pops out of the screen and bites you.

The funniest thing is that the guy Artest punched (in the hat) isn't the gut O'Neal punched. The guy O'Neal tagged was the guy that tried to get between Artest and the hat guy. He was trying to push Artest away and slides down the redwood that was Artest. He gets back to his feet to see the O'Neal freight train coming in.

I'm not saying he wasn't an instigator, only that O'Neal got the wrong guy.

That's what she said.
This is one of the events in life I remember exactly where I was at, who I was with, and what I was doing when it happened. I had some early form of text message alert on my phone that let me know about it, was watching a movie with a date and another couple at the time and asked that we turn on ESPN immediately....

In many ways it seems much longer than 15 years ago. The league, media, HD, life... Ha ha.

I liked Jamal Tinsley trying to be a peace maker, and the guy in red pulling at him, backing off, then pulling at him again so Jamal just shoves him like "the fuck off me dude."

This has always been my favorite part.

“After we calmed down, [Artest] looked at me like, ‘Jack, you think we going to get in trouble?’ Jamaal Tinsley fell out laughing. I said, ‘Are you serious, bro? Trouble? Ron, we’ll be lucky if we have a freaking job.’ That lets me know he wasn’t in his right mind, to ask that question.” —Stephen Jackson
The idea of a serious and sincere Artest asking that question after inciting a massive brawl with fans still makes me laugh.
