12/3-12/4 Weekend Gamethread: El Classico and El PetroClassico

I'm starting the gamethread early this week to complain about the Premier League scheduling the best match of the weekend for an early kickoff, again. This is the third time in four weeks. In Week 12, it was Man U vs. Arsenal. In Week 11, it was the North London Derby. This week, it's Man City vs. Chelsea, kicking off at 7:30 a.m. EST/4:30 a.m. PST. Is this Europe's revenge for electing Trump? I'm just glad I don't live on the West Coast.

Man City v. Chelsea is followed at 10:15 a.m. by Barcelona v. Real Madrid. That's a lot of excitement for a Saturday morning.

They do it so there is less time for the supporters to drink before the match and cause trouble.
I know this is the case for local derbies, but is Man City vs. Chelsea really that contentious a fixture for the supporters? The late game on Saturday is Arsenal vs. West Ham, which seems like it would be much more potentially volatile.

I think any time they have a big club vs a big club match up they do it. I don't agree with it, but when you start looking at how England treats its fans its basically high grade babysitting and I don't agree with a lot of what they do. My theory is they believe by not pricing out fans they need to take the measures they do but I disagree.

The night slot on Saturdays (12:30 EST) and the later morning games on Sunday also frequently get marquee matchups. I have no clue why so many recent big games have been early Saturday.

However these things are decided, I'm pretty sure television ratings considerations loom large.

It's because the games scheduled at 3pm UK time on Saturday cannot be shown on UK tv by law, so the only games that can be shown on Saturday are the early game and the late game, and the rights are held by different networks, thus if the game is on one particular network then it has to be the early game.

Thanks. That makes sense.

Oh KDB, what a miss!

City have been really impressive but not quite secure enough to think Chelsea can't get back into this.

They scored three great goals, but this scoreline really flatters Chelsea. They were pretty thoroughly outplayed for the first hour, and if KDB scores that chance City probably win going away.

Aguero just hates Luiz. Not the first time he's gone out of his way to try to injure him. Of course you can argue Luiz should have been off the pitch but in spite of all the awful from the ref City had plenty of chances to put it away.

Big lol at Fabregas more or less throwing himself over the hoardings to make sure Fernandinho got his red. Fabregas slaps him in the face, too. But diving off the pitch is a new one.

Aguero might be charged with violent conduct as well. Would be his second offense this season. No idea what the suspension would be like.

It should be an extended ban. It was stupid. Luiz is an annoying piece of shit but Aguero was a complete moron and can have no complaints when he sees an extended ban.

The next match will be!! Aguero just went up to Diego Costa and Ben Afra level of cunty in my book. It was completely pointless, and could of really hurt Luiz.

I always assumed that it was to get the big game on prime time in Asia too.

While I don't think it was intentional, Luiz raked his studs down Aguero on the corner. This happens a lot in football and Aguero needs to be more sensible. Having said that, Luiz is a dirty player who constantly does stuff like that so I wouldn't blame a player for not believing all such incidents are an accident.

The difference though is that even if you don't think it is an accident, you don't respond by turning into Chuck Norris at the next opportunity. Especially as a striker, you get plenty of chances to clumsily truck over defenders. Not speaking from experience or anything like that

Fraser Foster just whiffed on a clearance to give Benteke a free goal. No one happier than Alan Pardew.

And now 2-0 Palace!

Beautiful break by Spurs, topped off by a nice leave by Son for Kane.

Finally showing his Leverkeusen form

Pulisic came on for the last 12 minutes and had a couple of great runs through a billion defenders.

West Ham/Arsenal could get ugly. Hammers missing both outside backs and basically all the strikers.

Edit- and starting CB, his backup just got injured in the 4th minute.

Brutal. Missed handball in the box on one end Alexis with a great goal on the other.

This West Ham team is so frustrating. If they could ever have the same healthy squad for 5 or so matches in a row it should be good. Yes defense is a bit weak and Noble has fallen off, but still should be a top 10 squad easy, probably 6-8 range.

West Ham fits in that stadium like....something that does not fit well.
The stadium is a Jeff Fisher excuse. They aren't losing because of it. They are losing because the injury bug hasn't treated them well and Payet and Noble aren't effecting games like last year.

Liverpool with several significant changes this morning. Lucas in for Matip, Wijnaldum seemingly set up in Coutinho's role, and Origi up top. Lallana makes the bench, but not Sturridge.

For Bournemouth, Wilshere is back and playing center attacking mid in a 4-2-3-1 shape. Nathan Ake is staring at left back, could be a tough day for him keeping track of Mane.

Should be a tough one for 'Pool. The Cherries should be well organized in defense, and their starting XI presents more counter attacking threat than Sunderland or Southampton did.

Who does Klavan need to blow for a league start? How is Lucas above him on the chart?

Origi's miss is going to haunt until there's a breakthrough.

And there's the breakthrough! And a make up from Origi! Boruc with a bad decision to come out, but fantastic strike from Origi to net that.
