Will be very cool if home ice comes down to a bunch of bullshit decisions by some guys in Toronto looking at Zapruder-level footage to make determinations on good goals!

Some fancy town in CT
Three in four nights, back to back with travel, rested opponent at home, Rask plays like shit, a BS goal overturn and Habs eek out a win.

Enjoy the upcoming year 27 of your Cup drought assholes.

Yup I'm about to give up on video review of offsides in both hockey and football. It just sucks the life out of the game. They should have a rule that if it takes more than 2 minutes(or some other amount of time) to decide that the call stands as the replay is clearly not incontrovertible proof.

The worst part is that after every goal the first thing that comes to my mind is I want a shot of the visiting coach to see if he is considering a challenge. That really sucks as a fan. Yay! Wait, hold on...

Can’t remember in Colorado, but on the last 2 Babcock and Julien were afforded extra time to make a decision. Rubbish. Get on with the game. If they are going to allow time for video staffs to Zapruder it then might as well just have an automatic review on every goal and get rid of coaches challenges all together. I’d imagine the success rate is pretty damn high on these because teams have war rooms looking at it and the coach isn’t risking a penalty unless he is 100% sure he will win.(Although you’ll never be able to convince me the goal tonight was conclusive).

I listened to TSH rather than deal with Sportsnet Pravda tonight, and Beers mentioned that Mete’s 2nd goal looked an awful lot like a goal in the Colorado game that got called back because Krejci got knocked into Grubauer. So, NHL replay is officially broken because who knows what you’ll get.

I just caught up with the end of the game. The offsides replay rule is total horseshit. I would say that if the roles were reversed too. If you need to keep it - some simple changes:

1) Once the puck is in the zone for 30s, it’s no longer applicable
2) 30s only to review it
3) Full speed cameras only

That’s the big one. Make it like the NFL. If you’re not ready to review by the time the linesman is at the dot for the face off, tough luck. Don’t give a coach 3 minutes to consult his video guy, then be satisfied only when the coach declines to review.

Yup. Goal is scored, officials skate over to the bench of the team giving up the goal and ask "do you want to challenge?" Anything less than an immediate "yes" is considered a "no" and play goes on. The whole reason for this ridiculous system was a blatant, you-could-tell-in-real-time missed call. Especially if you're going to gamify the whole challenge process (something that I don't particularly care for - it shouldn't be the job of the teams competing to correct your on-ice officials' mistakes, but that's another topic). "Are you willing to risk a DoG minor?" is a really hollow penalty when teams are given minutes to make sure that their challenge won't fail. I also have to wonder if there's a meta-level impact of the penalty always being applied now: the reviewers have it in their minds that a team wouldn't risk digging a deeper hole for themselves with a frivolous challenge, so that biases them toward overturning the goal even when things aren't "conclusive".

I'm usually the opposite of a Luddite - if you have the tech, use it. But here, I feel like if you're going to trust the linesmen with the ability to halt play for offsides (where they may get it wrong and kill a legit scoring chance), you need to trust them when they let a play proceed. Train them to be the best they can be, save the microscope treatment for after-game assessments and incentivize them for making the least number of wrong/missed calls. Save the replay stuff for actual game-changing judgment calls like major/match penalties, where another official can confirm the call with the benefit of multiple camera angles, slo-mo, etc.

My question is, "Why was't the off-side called when it happened?" If the goalie had gloved the shot, the face-off would have been held in that zone; whereas, if the off-side had been called when it happened, the face-off would have taken place at center ice. Would you risk having a minor penalty called for challenging a call in that situation? The millisecond, or so, that constituted the off-side had absolutely no bearing on the scoring of the goal. Instant replay is bringing about the ruination of sports.

Cassidy is right. Once the review goes past a minute or two, they're just looking for a reason to call it offsides. This is not what the coaches intended this to be used for. Clear and obvious ones should be overturned, not if someone's skate blade is over the line by .000001 millimeter.

Still fuming. Can overturn this bullshit but can't review a slew foot in the Finals. Cool cool cool. Nice league.
