With Smart, Irving, Hayward, and Theis out, the Celtics can (and will) petition the league to give us an extra roster spot that can be used for the rest of the regular season, or until one of them comes back.

So, what do we think we're looking at? A small forward type player so we can never see minutes from Nader again? A ball handler, since we really only have Rozier and Larkin who can do that?

It isn't a huge deal because the player won't be in the playoffs, but if the Cavs get super hot it will help us stay in the 2 seed.

A ball handler. I think folks here are too hard on Nader. He's never seen NBA action before. Give him a little time to find his legs.

The Cs are going to find out what they have in (or whether Brad can work any magic on) Anthony Bennett I would guess.

Cavs have 43 wins. They play @ BRK, @ MIA, @ CHA, NO, DAL, TOR, WAS, @PHI, @NYK, NYK to remain. If they lose two of TOR, MIA, NO, WAS, and PHI, they will at best be at 51 wins.

Cs have 49 wins. They still SAC, PHO, CHI, ATL, and BRK on the schedule. On these games alone, they should get to break 51 wins minimum whether or not pick up anyone meaningful.

Shane Larkin steps up in ball handling? As long as Brad convinces him he’s not to dribble around like Bob Cousy with the game put away.

Shane Larkin is without question the backup point guard for now. The purpose of added another player is to deal with the possibility that he or Rozier gets injured.

Any offer where Kilpatrick will have an opportunity for minutes is a better one than signing with Boston to sit behind Rozier and Larkin while having no future here next season then doing this all over again. He's better off on a bottom feeder being able to get out on the floor and possibly secure a guaranteed deal with that team for next year if he impresses.

Kilpatrick got a 3 year $6 million deal. Can't blame him for blowing off the 10 day contract.
Good deal for both sides. Only the remainder of this season is guaranteed as Years 2 and 3 carry Team Options. I love these types of deals when they are a win-win......Kilpatrick is assured of regular rotation minutes over the final 9 games to earn a guaranteed deal which he would never have had in Boston. Team gets two cheap option years if he develops quickly.

James Young was just released by the 76ers. He knows the system, or at least he should, in theory. On the other hand, he is not very good.

If they sign a wing to a ten day, it's likely just to be Bennett. I think they specifically wanted a combo guard as insurance as they have three healthy guards at the moment, only two of which are playmakers and only one taller than 6'2".

Are you implying that James Young isn't a playmaker and couldn't fill that role? For shame...

Bennett is a wing?

According to Yahoo!, the Celtics have agreed to a 10-day contract with veteran guard Xavier Silas. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the expected deal. Silas hasn’t played at the NBA level since the 2011-12 season and has played in two career NBA games. He most recently played in the BIG3 basketball league for Brian Scalabrine’s team, the Ball Hogs, and will become the first BIG3 player to play in the NBA

He played on Maine Red Claws in 2012-13 so he has some familiarity with the organization.

This season he played with the Northern Arizona Suns, and averaged 18.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.1 blocks per game. 38.3% shooting from 3 on 9.4 3P attempts per game.

Strikes me as a favor to somsome more than a possible game contributer. Maybe Scal convinced Danny he'd be a good practice body?

We were never expecting a 10-day guy to be an actual game contributor. If any of these available guys were they wouldn't be available on 10-day deals. It is important to have extra bodies especially this time of year to eat garbage minutes.

Kilpatrick got 18 min for Chicago last night, 12 pts/2 rebs on 5-9 shooting.

Fair enough, but I would expect a bit more out of Kilpatrick than I would someone who hasn't seen an NBA floor in 5 years or so.

I don't know all the rules surrounding this sort of thing, but I'm assuming they weren't allowed to pick up someone from the G league?

Silas played in the G-League this year. I think his team's season is over. Here's some highlights from a January 23rd game.

He's got a nice jump shot, that's for sure.

As would I which is why he was Ainge's first choice and another team made a more aggressive offer with guaranteed playing time for the remainder of the season. Nobody was making aggressive offers for Xavier Silas last week which is why he was available on a 10-day.

I went to a bunch of those 12-13 Red Claws game and remember Silas well. He was a decent ball handler but I don't remember him scoring much. Of course this was the season the Red Claws were running a lot of offense for Fab Melo so it was hard to get a read on the other players.

Anybody finishing up in China who might be interesting?
Scouts of today aren't the scouts of 15 years ago. Aside from Kilpatrick you have MarShon Brooks, a player who years ago would get a shot on a 10-day. This year the Grizzlies signed him out of China and GUARANTEED next seasons NBA contract to get him in.......and MarShon has responded by putting up 23.3/3.5/3.5/1.5 in his first 3 games on 57% shooting.

You guys got a roster spot to spare? If his ankle gets right in time for the playoffs, he seems like a pretty great fit in Stevens-ball...

Edit: never mind, now it sounds like he might not be playoff-eligible. Bummer for him. He had some great moments this year for the Ws; just got injured at exactly the wrong time and caught in a roster crunch with the sudden emergence of Cook and Looney.

Your Warriors are heartless. He sticks with them all year, plays all their garbage time minutes and then they cut him before the real fun begins. All for Quinnsanity! Or KD. Or Draymond...
