10/5 - It was wild before this

There was a cat in the outfield, a turtle in the clubhouse, the players played like dogs, and hopefully the manager becomes a stray. There is no way to look at this wild season as a success to this point but even still, there are so many bright spots right now that could carry the 2021 Yankees deep into the playoffs. You have Severino, Loaisiga and Holmes emerging as absolute studs, Judge and Stanton absolutely locked in, Rizzo and Torres potentially about to go on hot streaks, Kluber and Taillon looking good, and a team that is never out of the game (except Saturday). They are not even close to the best team on paper but they have a roster that could carry them through a series or two.

You all know how I feel about one-game playoffs but this is exactly what Cole is here for. Dominate early and crush Eovaldi before Cora has a chance to bring in a different pitcher we need to also crush. No lead is safe tomorrow.

Boston's magical run in 2018 started (after an amazing 108-54 regular season) with a 4 game series win against NY, they split the first two in Fenway, Boston obliterated NY in game 3 and then held on to win game 4 and close it out.

Since then in games played after August 1 each year, NY is 21-2 against BOS, covering 2019, 2020 and 2021 (so far). Here's hoping for 22-2.

Just saw Renfroe’s throw from the wall in center in Fenway to get Wendle at third on one bounce, impressive. Maybe don’t try to run on him this time, NY?

Welcome to every year as a Yankees fan.
Nah, this is the first year in a while where NY were the clear league faves coming into the season, but they underachieved and TB did what they do, lost their three best SPs from 2020 and still got decidedly better.

Ranked 3rd last year

Ranked 3rd 2019

I can keep going back but it's typically been 1-3 every year minus 2016/2017

I already feel like throwing up. I know they just roughed up Eovaldi, but he typically owns us. Maybe our lefty bats will do something (Gallo? Ha, yeah right).

Proving my point, the Astros ahead of them in both of those rankings. They’ve been a top 5 team in talent since 2017, this was the first year they were universal AL preseason favorites.

Mike Axisa’s Patreon column today has one of his dumbest suggestions ever: he wanted to DFA Chris Gittens to get Andujar on the roster for this one game. Luckily he does not make decisions for NY because yikes.

So NY will probably take 15 position players, the 12 from Sunday plus Florial, Allen and Brantly, maybe 16 if Gittens is healthy.

Greg Allen was 15-15 in SBs in the final 13 AAA games, 5-5 in his brief time with NY.

My guess at the lineup

Torres (2b)
Rizzo (1B)
Judge (RF)
Stanton (DH)
Gallo (LF)
Odor (3B)
Urshela (SS)
Gardner (CF)
Higashioka (C)

Are you guys talking about what you prefer or what you think will happen? I obviously want him gone, but unfortunately I feel like just making the wild card game might have saved his job. I think he'd need to make some obvious blunders tonight to get himself fired. Hope I'm wrong though.

I think the only way just making the wild card game saves his job is if the front office and analytical guys are even more involved in the day-to-day decision making than what has been claimed in the media. More shared blame than we realize and keeping Boone would be easier than canning him and looking inward. Also, I think Cashman values a manager who allows that kind of input. Many would not.

I still think Boone might not come back on his own anyway. Health issues, stress, etc.

I don’t like this team much but will root hard for them tonight. White knuckles all the way. Big knot in my stomach. October baseball, which I have enjoyed since 1955.
I’m pretty slow on research these days. just read that JD Martinez sprained his ankle tripping over second base while running out to right field. Has that ever happened before? I need BrandName to look that one up.

It's going to be hard for me to root for NY next year if they don't fire Boone. The point is that TB is the clear competition, and NY is at a decided disadvantage in every game against them with Cash vs. Boone. Cashman has to know this by this point even if he doesn't want to admit it. If NY can knock out both BOS and TB, then maybe Boone can stay but even then they need to hire a coach specifically for bullpen moves.

This is NY’s best defensive team, better than if DJ was healthy:

Anthony Rizzo 1B
Aaron Judge RF
Giancarlo Stanton DH
Joey Gallo LF
Gleyber Torres 2B
Brett Gardner CF
Gio Urshela 3B
Kyle Higashioka C
Andrew Velazquez SS

Pawtucket Times had a good article today where Brendan McGair talked to Fred Lynn, mostly about 1978, but Lynn found time to mention the terrible defense played by the 2021 Yankees and Red Sox. Lynn cited two plays in RF by Lou Piniella in 1978 that saved three runs, maybe more. Glad to see the Yankees emphasizing defense tonight behind Cole.

ESPN and MLB make me laugh. Can they possibly cover a game between these two teams without reliving 03 and 04? It’s the lowest form of analysis and it’s so boring. Talk about the relief pitching in early innings or the released lineups.

Oh, that reminds me: ESPN 2 is also televising this with their stat crew, who are also not ideal but you can avoid A-Rod and his endless flow of incorrect info if you like (I like).

Oddly confident about this, but think it comes down to a matter of close bullpens. Expecting a low scoring game that the Yankees score first, but the Red Sox threaten late but do not cash in because of a Holmes
ground ball.

Really hoping for good bullpen management if need be but I’m only fooling myself for false hope in this specific respect.

And I’ve got nothing on that base injury and precedent. Mantle and the drain came to mind immediately as the closest comparable.

What's the story on the turtle?
Nestor Cortes got a pet turtle, took it the clubhouse and the team was infatuated with the turtle. They then went on a 6 game winning streak and there was a lot of funny intra-team humor related to it. The Yankees dont allow mascots so this is as close as they've gotten in a long time.

Turtle had a bad series against the Rays.
That might be true.

It could also be true that the Rays own the Yankees so damn bad right now that the little ninja turtle is the only thing that kept them from being swept. When the Yankees get going on streak, winning or losing, they go deep.
