The lack of a bench and a few better arms in the pen is hurting the team. There’s a handful of pitchers that are unusable; and the options to replace a struggling Renfroe are less than appealing. It’s kind of amazing they are where they are, frankly.

Renfroe in regular year: 6 GDP (572 PAs).

Renfroe in playoffs: 5 GDP (41 PAs).

He was so crucial to this team getting to the playoffs but he just really hit a wall and it may be the difference.

Yes, it’s been a brutal few games for Renfroe but he was unexpectedly instrumental in getting them to the tournament. There’s always someone who shits the bed when it counts and he still has another game or maybe two to come through.

I keep playing Renfroe.

I don't see a way that they win without him returning to form and he's not going to return to form on the bench. Does it look like snapping out of the funk is likely? Nope. But you just have to hope he gets a lucky hit or catches one and snaps out of it.

Here's the bottom line. There is really no difference between the Red Sox playing and losing one more game this year or the Red Sox playing 9 more games this year and losing 4. Either way they are not going to be champions.

There is no more feel good. That's for when the year is over. At this point there are two possibilities: The Red Sox get 6 more wins before they run out of games to do it, or they don't.

They aren't winning 6 more games if Renfroe doesn't snap out of it. They need him. So he keeps playing.

Does he have >=5 hits? At least that would make his outs per plate appearance ratio below 1.
Heh. Yeah, 7 hits and 7 BB. You wouldn't know it given how he's played with runners on base though. He's been at his worst with runners on. Only 1 RBI with a ton of chances.

The other good argument is that if you keep Renfroe in, we have a chance to see a MLB record with 6 GIDP's in one post-season, so there's that too.
