But it does matter. Whitlock gave up a blast. Eavoldi let runners on. The ump is an abomination and putting Perez in was dumb. But the Sox could have been up at least a couple more runs, and the ace pitchers could have held the line.
Everything matters. But with a competent ump the Red Sox would be batting in the 9th in a tied game with a chance at a walkoff

Perez came into the game because Cora was conceding the loss rather than deplete his actual relievers on the longshot odds the Sox came back in a game they've managed 3 hits. Situations like that are the only reason he's on the roster, not to win games.
That might be the reason but it’s bad reasoning. You don’t punt a 1 run game.

The Sox staff has at least three pitchers who are almost completely useless in situations of any kind of significance. They’ve been at least a reliever short for awhile now and finally got burned tonight.

Had the bats not taken the last 7 innings off, we probably don’t get tot his point hit here we are. Worst places to be than 2-2.

and now Shaw hits…

I don't understand this logic. They only had one at bat left. Bringing someone in to get ONE out to give yourself a chance to score one or two runs is not depleting your bullpen.

They were never pinch hitting for Vaz in that situation. Maybe if they had an actual lefty bat. There is too much belief in the Vaz mystical leadership and late inning heroics.

Possibly. This game might look a lot different with a competent ump. He blew a ton of calls for both sides. Seemed like more went against the Sox, but the Astros got screwed a bunch too.

Geez you're excited to play some defense here. It's a fucking game thread
I’m done, I always just hate blaming losses on officiating, I guess it’s a pet peeve of mine. Laz Diaz most certainly is an awful umpire though, no denying that, but he’s awful for both teams and you have to deal with his garbage.

it’s the playoffs and if a good lefty hitter is up, you’ve got to use your lefty even if he isn’t. A particularly good pitcher. I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.

So he was saving Shaw for the Pressly match-up? Seems like Cora got a bit too locked into some plans tonight and didn't adjust. Whitlock for 2 and Eovaldi to close is fine, but that changes after the Altuve dinger. You think Shaw is a good match-up versus Pressly, cool, but you needed him in the 8th not when the game was a blow-out. Kinda brutal.

In a one run game at home with their closer in their second inning of work, that's inexcusable.

I still don't know why you go to Whitlock in the 7th. Ottavino whiffs Correa looking (his only batter faced) to end the 6th. You've got Tucker coming up to start the 7th. Why not see if Ottavino can steal a couple of outs, and go to Whitlock at the first sign of trouble.

Why not let Pivetta go another inning?

Of course, all of these buttons Cora pushed were fine until Laz fucking Diaz. And folks citing the 0-8 with RISP by the Sox and 17 LOB is also directly related to Diaz' strike zone turning into the size of a continent at the most inopportune times all night.

Got fucked by Laz but the blame is still on the offense. Couldn’t capitalize on opportunities. Come back tomorrow and get at it. No one really thought this was going to be that easy.
