Watch the replay again--he was half a yard past when he caught it. You get the forward progress once you have possession unless you willingly go back. Momentum doesn't change the forward progress spot---it's where he caught it.
This is just not correct. You get forward progress at the foremost point of the ball WHEN CONTACTED. The only thing that matters is contact.

Punting on 4th and 1, running out the clock, Mac having his best half yet. Let him cook Bill!

Inside Lou Gorman's Head
They had to snap it before the play clock. Timeout after the snap forces the punt, no? And given the block, don’t you need to make them snap it on 4th?

Don’t get the decision there. At all.

I assume that BB saw that the last 2 drives ended in negative plays - and so wanted to get things back under control at halftime. All that said, I really hate giving up an offensive possession against Dallas

Maybe he lost track of the down?
But... he waited until the Pats ran the clock all the way down, then called the timeout immediately before the kneel. If he had waited two more seconds to call the timeout (until after the kneel), the Pats would have had to punt with 7 seconds left.
