Hendriks warming, cannot imagine how nervous I would be as an A's fan.

I haven't followed this series closely, but the (non)use of Cease has to be a huge mistake on Renteria's part. If you know there's a chance you're going to your rookie to start a do-or-die game with a short leash on him, your other half-decent starting pitcher needed to be the first guy out of the bullpen today. I don't know if his short appearance yesterday changed that, but if so, Renteria should have known better than to use him then.

Yeah, a lot of very dubious managing these last few AL games. Do you think the Indians win last night if Francona was managing?

Nice pitch from Hendriks to K Moncada, he looks surprisingly fresh.

I think Rick Renteria loses his job after this by the White Sox. It's a shame, because the White Sox overachieved this year, but their collapse over the final few weeks of the season followed by this disastrous bullpen usage today is probably too much for him to overcome.

Anyway, congrats to the A's! First postseason series win since 2006 is wild, and will be a fun series against the Astros. Remember this?:

The 4 AL teams remaining were all among the 5 AL teams in the 2019 playoffs, the Twins were the 5th.

The overachieved part is the key. He’s done a great job with this team. I highly doubt he goes anywhere

On Twitter he should have been escorted out of the stadium mid-game and on trial by the 9th. :)

More seriously, Ozzie Guillen and Frank Thomas have apparently been all over him during the late season struggles on TV broadcasts, and the fanbase is pretty livid. It's probably not fair (I haven't watched enough of their games to judge), but I wouldn't be surprised if he's Grady Little'd.

The 4 AL teams remaining were all among the 5 AL teams in the 2019 playoffs, the Twins were the 5th.
If the Cardinals and Dodgers advance and join the Braves, that would mean 3 of the 4 2019 NLDS teams are playing again in the 2020 NLDS. Odd that the only one missing is last year's WS champ!

I don't see how it's Renteria's fault his rookie X factor reliever got injured today, or the White Sox couldn't bury their chances.

the team is a year or two early and the pitching talent wasn't quite there. they'll be back soon. maybe they decide Renteria was the rebuilding manager and they want someone else now, but firing him over this game, no.

Renteria's strength is developing a young team. People forget that he managed the kids on the Cubs before they replaced him with Maddon's super genius.
He's done a great job with the White Sox, and I doubt he goes anywhere. But if he does, it sure as hell won't be due to alleged broadcaster criticism and alleged fan anger.

Meanwhile, w/o their top two starting pitchers, the Padres dream season is headed to an early exit

Rick Hahn owns a lot of the responsibility for the White Sox not being an October threat this year. This year's team was two starting pitchers short of challenging for a championship and made no significant in-season acquisitions. I'd have to go back and look at what was available, but surely they could have improved at least one rotation spot by trading for an rental without giving up an important piece of their future. Hahn's also responsible for most of the good that's going on there, and their total lack of moves this year hints that they weren't that invested in winning this clusterfuck of a season, so I think they all get a pass for this week's results.

4-0 STL, but the Fathers have 2 on, 1 out. Don't sleep on SD, led MLB in come from behind wins.
They stranded those guys, but they have bases loaded and no one out in the 4th now.

So many quick hooks these last handful of games, so rarely is it the right move (not that we really know without seeing how both ways would play out, but it has rarely gone well).

It did work short-term (after the bases loaded BB) but now the SP is out of the game and there are still five innings left. Crochet in the White Sox game earlier today worked the inning he came in also, but it came back to bite them in the middle innings (partly because he got hurt, can't blame the manager for that).

Yeah, I'm not saying it's easy to make these decisions, a lot of unexpectedly bad relief pitching also.

This is actually I think maybe TB's biggest edge, they manage their pitching staff all year like this so the guys I think are more used to it. Crochet coming in in the first or Karinchak in the 4th or Green/Britton in the 5th/6th are not situations they're used to, that can't help.

Yeah, damned if you, damned if you don’t. I love seeing the unwritten rules crowd get blown up, though, and all these teams embracing new ways of thinking.

I think you’re right about the Rays edge on that front. They don’t do anything in the playoffs that they’re not practicing year round. They’ve completely dispensed with set bullpen roles and all their arms are accustomed to being called on at any time. It’s a mentality as well as a strategy.

Lousy time for the White Sox and the Padres to be my adopted teams for the postseason. I’ll have to reassess for the divisional round.

Good call. Yea, it’s a tough decision in a 3 game series.

It's still weird to be happy for Machado, but I live a block away from Petco and heard the horn before seeing it on TV. That was pretty awesome!!! Good to hear people out on theor balconies cheering
