The B's finally got a couple days off after an onslaught of 9 games in 15 days. But it's right back to work tonight against another quality opponent.

In the first half of this season, the Hurricanes have shown themselves to be an elite defensive team. It's time for the "new look" Bruins of 2022 to test them in that regard.

Willie O'Ree's #22 goes to the rafters tonight. Believe the ceremony is at 7:00pm and puck drop will be at 8:00pm. Unfortunatley, I believe Willie will not be in the building as he is taking precautions against covid.

Tickets sold at a 50% loss for tonight. Seems like it is gonna be an awfully subdued jersey retirement, but given his age, better thirty-odd years late mid-pandemic than never I guess.

Grz is out of protocol and awaiting final clearance. He should return. Cassidy's not sure who will come out. Same forward group, Rask in net.

Marchand - Bergeron - Smith
Hall - Haula - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Coyle - Steen
Blidh - Nosek - Lazar

Grzelyck - McAvoy
Reilly - Carlo
Forbort - Clifton/Vaakanainen

Rask

I really don’t get why Vaakanainen is coming out when he’s been playing well, for a guy that’s sucked all year.

Well we don't know that Vaakanainen is sitting just yet, though I suspect it'll be him or Clifton. Clifton (and then Reilly) was the guy who lost his spot when Zboril started to emerge. If they do pull Clifton out, that means Vaakanainen would have to go to the right side which may not be ideal, but he has played it.

I think the jury's out on Vaak. I'd like to see him play more minutes with a middle of the road player. Either on the right side of Forbort or the left side of Clifton (this would be my preference). His most common linemates this season have been Charlie McAvoy (30 minutes) and John Moore (17 minutes). He hasn't played more than 10 minutes with any other defenseman. Predictibly, his results are awesome when he's been paired with McAvoy (77% xGF) and been beyond awful when paired with Moore (17% xGF). It's hard to find his true level of play with that kind of discrepancy. It's hard to look at the raw data and discern how much of the results are due to the partner. A few games with Forbort or Clifton should give us a better idea of where Vaakanainen is. I guess they could probably put Vaak with Carlo too and bump Reilly down but Reilly's been going good lately so I wouldn't mess with that pairing.

I would prefer that they kept Vaakanainen with McAvoy while that is working, and try Grzelcyk with Clifton. It puts a good puck moving D on all three pairs, and ensures that one of McAvoy, Carlo, or Grzelcyk is out there defensively at all times.

That's fair- if it's not broken, why fix it. I just think before we can make any long term conclusions on Vaakanainen, we need to see him play away from McAvoy (and Moore on the other end). Maybe now isn't the time, but at some point they need to do it. McAvoy could drag Hal Gill around to an elite pairing. Playing with McAvoy doesn't really tell us much about Vaakanainen's level of play.

Not sure what Tuukka’s supposed to do with a guy top of the crease without a defenseman within 5 feet
