Anyone still wondering why Chris Sale took a below-market deal from the Red Sox?
I'm just checking into this game thread to point out a couple things:

-A starting pitcher with a history of elbow issues is about to come back FROM AN ELBOW INJURY to be a relief pitcher in a role where he may have to warm up more than once a game, though he has shown he can handle long relief on short rest
-They have a starting pitcher with closing experience IN THE POSTSEASON and a clear issue with maintaining velocity and effectiveness once he gets over a certain pitch count, though he does some times twirl gems like striking out 17 in under 9 innings
-Both are signed long-term and are sunk costs no matter what, though one is making more THIS SEASON
- They just traded for a guy who regularly pitches fairly deep into games

In summation: they should reconsider which starter goes to the bullpen so they have a real weapon at the end of the game.

calling Sale & Eovaldi sunk costs in year 1 of their deals (year 0 technically for Sale) is classic gamethreading. get off the ledge for now, please.

The optimist in me really thought tonight would be a great night for this team. It’s been a very frustrating year. I don’t mind being 8 games over .500 per se; it’s just that this team should be way better.

Observations from the game:

1) Holy shit there were a lot of Dodgers fans there. maybe 75%2
2) Holy shit it's possible Chris Sale may be toast.
3) Holy shit, Wright sucks
4) Friday's game was possibly the result of jet lag.
5) Please no more CV at 1B.

I meant that they're getting paid what their salaries are regardless of performance. Maybe I used the wrong expression. The point is they are both here for the long haul and if one is going to be tabbed to close games, I think they picked the wrong guy.

I'll be clear: I'd rather have Sale throwing with max effort to get three outs in the 9th than Eovaldi.
