In a sport where scoring is already at a premium you obviously have to go out of your way to disallow goals. Otherwise the league might actually be entertaining.

Game shouldn't have been close. This team is the embodiment of why Corsi is a meaningless stat on its own.

I hope to hell that they don't trade for another rental winger this year thinking that will "fix" things. This team is nowhere close to competitive.

Gotta be sellers at the deadline.
Sweeney would just trade for more guys with “grit” & “jam”. Need a management change. Every forward he drafts or brings in is a bottom 6 guy. He has no clue how to acquire offensive talent. And I know that means Neely goes with him and I’m fine with that.

The more damning thing with Sweeney is he was brought in from the amateur scouting side and somehow, the team’s prospect pool is BAD. This is what makes that 2015 1st round all the more infuriating. Zboril might end up being okay, but DeBrusk and Senychyn going right before Barzal and Connor is mind-blowing. It was then, and it’s way worse now.

And then he would’ve probably traded Barzal for Charlie Coyle. They just make bad evaluations on offensive players.

When have they traded for grit and jam? If anything the front office has moved further and further away from it. His trades:

Stempniak and Lilss
Stafford
Nash, Nick Holden and Tommy Wingels
Coyle and Johansson
Kase and Ritchie

They have their questionable moves but they aren’t bringing guys in under some old school notion of needing grit. The bigger problem as I see it is all of those years include right wingers. Some of the moves were based on good methods (Nash, Kase) but the Bottomline is its become a failure.

That said, I don’t think the wingers are a problem.

I think you buy low on Hall with draft picks and hope the vets in the locker room can help him get back on track. They need to do something major at the deadline.

I don’t think their problems can be fixed at the deadline. They need serious work on the blue line and that is going to be an off-season undertaking. I’m not spending assets on this team right now. If someone gives me a pick for Kuraly, I’d do that but otherwise I’m holding and waiting for the summer.

I see 2nd line center as there biggest issue. Sure the defense doesn’t contribute enough to the offense, but Krejci giving them nothing is a huge problem. It would be nice if Coyle could fill that hole, but he’s inconsistent.

I have not had much opportunity to watch over the past 2-3 weeks, but is Krejci really the problem? Or is it his revolving door right winger and his left winger that is the very definition of "wildly inconsistent"?

Krejci definitely has some form of the yips with shooting. He definitely looks like he is skating better than earlier in the year and is probably a couple of flukey goals from getting untracked. I’d settle him in with Ritchie and Smith for a while and see what develops.

I’m more wait and see on doing much at the trade deadline. The playoffs are such a crapshoot on health and will probably be even more so this year. The expansion draft complicates everything on getting reinforcements on D that the price will end up being very high for someone who will have a marginal effect on how far they can go.
