    2023-24 Celtics

So in other words, all of the top teams in the league have blown a bunch of leads. This stat reminds me of LOB in baseball; it looks bad and feels bad, but you're going to squander some chances when you're good enough to generate a ton of them to start with.

NCAA Tournament First Four and Thursday Game Thread

As a Syracuse fan I shared some of that ambivalence. It also stung to watch that UVA debacle knowing that they absolutely curb-stomped the Orange early in the season.

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Agreed. I always hate the petulant tone that accompanies those opt-out statements. I guess in an era where you know you're going to have to restock a large portion of your roster every season there isn't enough value in playing the extra games and possibly building momentum for next year.

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Autry said right after the NC State loss that they wouldn't pass it up if invited - "I think any time you get a chance to make a postseason you have to take it." Again, not a big deal - and Cuse certainly has plenty to figure out with Mintz leaving and some big needs to address - but the snub...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I'm mildly surprised that Cuse didn't crack the NIT. Though I'll admit to not having paid a ton of attention to it over the years, it seems to be heavily slanted toward mid-majors. Two Ivies? 16-17 Xavier??

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Two big games in a row where they seemed completely unprepared. Truly frustrating and embarrassing. Hopefully Copeland can continue to grow (this game was certainly not his best), and they can add some size and shooting for next season.

    3/7 - Catch-22 in Mile High

Classic NBA - huge matchup, high-level play, and refs taking over.

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

If you really want to drive yourself nuts, note that Lunardi has St. John's with a good chance of getting in. They're 17-12 with 500 conference record and some pretty ugly losses. But Big East!

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Lunardi was on ESPN last night and was asked if Cuse would be in good shape if they beat Clemson. He was skeptical, citing their NET rating in the low 80s and saying that they "need to stack wins." Call me a boomer or Luddite, but it seems kind of insane that a team could finish with 21 wins +...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

The conference strength stuff sometimes feels subjective or circular. Does the fact that Notre Dame beat Clemson and GT beat UNC mean that the ACC is weak, or that it's strong/competitive from top to bottom? Then you have conferences like the SEC where merely being in the league seems to give...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Syracuse suffers from being a CNY team in the ACC. Most of the attention goes to the NC programs, with occasional nods to Clemson, FSU and Miami. I'm convinced that if SU had a similar win/loss profile but was in the Big East they'd be considered a bubble team at worst. But in the ACC they're...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Katz has them at #35 in his Power 36. Aside from that, I haven't seen SU mentioned as even a peripheral bubble team. Seems like it would be hard to keep them out of that conversation if they manage to beat Clemson tomorrow night and finish 4th in the conference - with other quality wins over...

UMass joining the MAC in all sports beginning in 2025-2026

Something tells me UVM is perfectly happy dominating America East and getting that auto bid almost every year. They've got a nice thing going.

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

They've at least put themselves in position to get into the conversation. Avoiding the previously-inevitable 8-9 conference matchup would be nice. If they could take care of business at Louisville and somehow win at Clemson they'd probably be guaranteed a top-5 seed - and would obviously have...

What do you want Pats to do with #3?

It really seems like much of this discussion comes back to the question of how close the Pats are to competing in the AFC. A lot of pundits seem to take as a given that NE is at least a couple years away, but with a strong defense in place I think a couple key additions on offense could really...

What do you want Pats to do with #3?

Aside from being another goofy white guy from a college championship team, I don't see many similarities. That said, I voted for taking Daniels at #3. QB is a huge roll of the dice, and in my mind taking a guy who's super athletic is a bit of a hedge since in theory he can make plays with his...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

I agree with a lot of this. Just last night my wife was mocking me as an angry old man as I ranted about the absurdity of UConn traveling to Nebraska for a midweek conference game. Football killed the original Big East - and as you said, it continues to drive much of the lunacy. The transfer...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Jekyll and Hyde indeed - and often within the same game. It has been fun to watch Copeland emerge as an agitator, hustle guy and occasional playmaker. He's a real piece of work. I realize that the national announcers were selling the drama, but it was funny to hear them talk about Cuse and NC...

    Autry's Army - 2023-24 SU Hoops

Obviously a great win over the Heels. That was Mintz at his best, and Copeland had some huge "Tommy Point" type defensive plays. Saturday at GA Tech will be a good test of the team's stamina and maturity coming off such a draining and emotional win.
