Baseball Is Broken (on the field, proposed rule changes, attendance, etc.)

Agreed. Winning at the edges in ways that do not affect salary caps should be every well-run team’s goal. Pretty ironic the Sox were not prepared for a legal rule change, but Cora was famously once part of an illegal scheme to gain an edge.

Shohei Ohtani’s attorneys accuse interpreter of ‘massive theft’ tied to alleged gambling

It Sounds like the level of a specific federal crime is not particularly severe, as the feds seemingly have bigger fish to reel in. however, does his status as a non-citizen affect how the legal aspect plays out? I am assuming he is in the US on a work visa, which may have a lower threshold to...

Do we need a Celtics Announcing thread?

Scal has his strengths and weaknesses, like anyone. I appreciate that he seems to know the rule book better than most announcers. as Brad noted above, he not only explains when the refs got it correctly, but explains the rule. A fairly well-known example is face-guarding while boxing out. I do...

Potential Bright Spots in Fenway Tire Fire

A lot of good stuff in this thread for those like me, always a Sox optimist in springtime. I’m hopeful that Andrew Bailey has a huge positive effect on the pitching staff. Something I have not yet seen (I only watch Sox games) is a pitching coach calling the pitches. Seems fairly easy in the...

    Mayo: Season 1

I agree with the majority here that Steve B is better served by not following Bill. I’m probably putting too much into that quote from 1-2 years back where BB stated he wants to work with players and coaches he likes. I sense it may be more important Bill that his sons follow him than it is to...

    Mayo: Season 1

I was not previously aware of how vast a net Arthur Blank casts for coaching searches. The relevance for us is lack of clarity for BB’s future which in turn leads to unknown 2024 plans for Steve B and Brian B. Mayo and the Pats need to plan as if they are not returning, yet consider their...

    2023-24 Celtics

It is unclear to me why x points on y shots is used so often, rather than points per possession. An extreme hypothetical could be say Andre Drummond going 1-1 from the field with 10 other shooting fouls drawn. He goes 4 of 20 from the line. 6 points on 1 shot sounds good, but 6 points on 11...

    Minor league thread 2023

as long as your hard work and efforts in this forum do not lead to divorce for you! here’s another note of thanks and appreciation for all you do. I sometimes get a week behind in this thread and look forward to catching up on news, musings, and all the other content you share with us. Thanks...

    Verdugo is Gold Glove finalist

I’m on the dump Cora bandwagon, while also acknowledging it is unlikely. my concern with this is that Verdugo seemed to be singled out exclusively, in spite of others having hustle failures. Raffi frequently spent a few seconds at home plate slamming his bat into the ground, which had same net...

    Brooks Robinson has passed away

I’ll echo the praise of him as a person (3rd hand). A guy I did business with over the years has an older brother who was a visiting clubhouse attendant at Fenway back in the 60’s. Brooks Robinson was by far the nicest visiting player to these guys, and a really generous tipper.

Which AL East team(s) would you trade places with right now?

I chose Boston for a few reasons. One is I remain an optimist and while i feel a few other AL east teams may outplay the Sox in 2024, I think we are poised for a very nice 5-year run. The optimism includes the hiring of a new POBO who can maintain a strong farm system while simultaneously...

    8/6 I’m mad as hell

This was first Fenway game ever for my son. Loss was disappointing, but having to explain it is not normal for the other team’s fans to be far more vocal than the Sox fans really sucked. The only energy from our side was when Pablo came in to pitch. Not sure what NESN showed, but the pitch types...

    8/6 I’m mad as hell

This is amazingly like an AL east road game for the Sox. Probably 50% Toronto fans here. Looks like about 75/25 mix of team shirts in favor of Toronto. I have seen higher percentages of Red Sox fans when I went to Camden yards. Hopefully those not here early will be mostly Sox fans.

Surprised there isn't an announcer thread...

Monaco is so good, and without needing to be the star, a la DOB. Even in limited games, he seems to have a nice chemistry with Youk. He is prepared, sets up Youk to analyze, and seems like a guy you would want to sit and watch a game with. For the notoriously cheap NESN to not save $ by...

    General Offseason Thread.

I would love to see this flopping call used for the increasingly popular “snapping your head back like you were shot” while driving to the basket or on mild contact coming around a sceeen. Trae young is one of many who does this far too often.

    Minor league thread 2023

I was at this game. Joely had zero command, and an ugly inning was saved by a hard-hit DP. Yorke came close on a drive to deep left center. Seemed like enough height and distance to have been a homer at Fenway. Coffee tops out at 91, but throws strikes. his delivery may be funky enough to...

Immaculate Grid: Show Off Your Useless Baseball Depth Knowledge!

I like brand name’s intentional degree of difficulty. I did not do this on purpose but got a .4% on upper left. Felt silly I missed the obvious, but that does demonstrate shooting for lesser known players is going to be both fun and nostalgic.

    Beat The Clock

With the pitch clock, it seems there is far less time to shake off a sign, and I have seen that rarely this season. I suppose if adamantly against it, a pitcher can use one of his 2 disengagements. This should put more of a premium on a catcher who is a great caller of pitches. I find it...
