Flames & Bruins- Hayes goes for 35!

Hey peeps, I haven't really followed the Bruins at all this offseason and this is my first game that I've had time to watch. But I'm back now. What are the biggest story lines I should know about?

    Red Sox sign David Price

If the Red Sox could get Price in his year 30-32 years and net a draft pick out of it, this has the potential to be the best contract in Red Sox history. EDIT: Forgot to mention

Phelps and Prado to the Marlins

Yeah, like I said who knows. It's just something I've found curious lately but could easily be a coincidence.

Phelps and Prado to the Marlins

I brought this up when the Yankees acquired McCarthy and Headley and got a "well a broken clock is right twice a day response", and that's probably still the case. But I continue to wonder if the Yankees are starting to put more stock in sabermetrics. Eovaldi doesn't have a great ERA, he doesn't...

How much importance should Ben place on getting an "Ace" for the 2015 Sox as they stand right now?

Both of these questions were highly subjective based on what you consider an "ace" to be and what you consider our "bigger chips" to be. I would love for us to go out and sign Max Scherzer to a reasonable contract or trade for Cole Hamels without giving up Betts, Bogaerts or Swihart. But barring...

How much importance should Ben place on getting an "Ace" for the 2015 Sox as they stand right now?

You win a prize for being the only poster to spell Jordan Zimmermann correctly. There was a Jordan Zimmerman, but he pitched 8 innings for the Mariners in 1999.

Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

I think it would be easier to get back under the luxury tax threshold if we're paying $20 million a year for Shields instead of $25+ million for Hamels or one of the aces that will be a free agent next year. I also like the leadership that Shields brings to the table, as well as how signing...

Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

Considering we're already over the luxury tax threshold and we've already given up a second round draft pick and a competitive balance draft pick, I think it would be somewhat of a wasted opportunity to stand pat. The penalties for going over the luxury tax threshold for just one year and then...

Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

That's my thinking as well. Masterson has the better FIP, xFIP, SIERA the last couple of years and Kelly's peripherals out of the bullpen have been much better than his peripherals as a starting pitcher.

Red Sox Agree to Terms with Justin Masterson

I'm not sure it's an either/or proposition. Given John Henry's stated willingness to go over the luxury tax threshold, I'd imagine we could have signed both. It's not like Masterson's taking Lester's spot or anything, we could still add a #1 starter like...

The Plan? Be flexible, I guess.

Hey man, I hear you. I was hoping the Red Sox would acquire many of the same pitchers. Unfortunately, the Mariners are saying they won't trade Iwakuma. The Nationals are attempting to extend Jordan Zimmerna. The rumor on Cole Hamels is that the Phillies are asking for teams' 2-3 best prospects...

The Plan? Be flexible, I guess.

Is there an alternative route you would have preferred? Should the Red Sox have paid $150+ million for Lester and $50+ million for McCarthy? Should they have traded Bogaerts, Betts and/or Swihart for someone like Cole Hamels?

Red Sox Agree to Terms with Justin Masterson

MLB Trade Rumors estimated that he'd get $12 million. $9 seems like a reasonable price.

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

This seems like a surprisingly low price for an above average innings eater with three years of team control. I don't feel comfortable judging Miley by his 4.34 ERA because Chase Field is not a friendly place to pitch and the Diamdonbacks were 28th out of 30 teams in defensive efficiency last...

Lester: Stop Believing What You Read on Twitter.

For the record, that "Cherington told us Sox players been talking to/probably still talking to Lester to sign. One player told me "he gave everything he had" #wbz" tweet was recycled from earlier.   https://twitter.com/RochieWBZ/status/542485600763265025

    Return of the Jedi?

Yeah, I'm definitely not an expert either. But if theoretically the Red Sox signed Jon Lester for $25 million a year, made a trade centered around Cespedes for Latos, signed Justin Masterson to a one year/$12 million deal, signed David Ross to a one year/$2 million deal and did the rumor of the...

    Return of the Jedi?

They wouldn't, that's why I didn't set it aside.     It's hard to say without being a member of the front office. Cherington just said that they've talked about and/or are working on "15-20 different starting pitcher scenarios." The Red Sox appear to match up well with the Reds on Latos or...

    Return of the Jedi?

I suppose that depends on your idea of "elite" but one Lester type and one Latos type doesn't seem out of the question. Assuming we trade Cespedes for Latos, and Lester costs $25 million per year, that would put us roughly $9 million over the luxury tax threshold with the need to add a backup...
