    October Game Thread

Yeah, this is only analogous if Pedro were able to pitch both games 4 and 5. Edit: and even then, not really.

    ALDS: Indians vs Red Sox

I might be alone in this, but I hate Ernie Johnson as a baseball announcer more than almost anything. We complain a lot here about announcers who either talk too much or too little or say dumb things, but Ernie Johnson is worse because he just has no idea what's going on. He calls popups and...

    September Game Thread

Two reasons I can think of that the end-of-game challenge would have to be immediate. One is that when the game ends people start celebrating and pouring water coolers and the media all comes out onto the field, so if the game might continue you'd want to know that right away. This is actually...

Report: This is Don Orsillo's last season

"And he makes the catch, without much room with which to work with."

    Let's Talk About MLBTV

It does this when you have an adblocker on. When mlbtv can't load the ad, it freaks out and restarts. I'm hoping the adblockers can work around this somehow eventually.

    The Pass-Happy Patriots

I'm not sure if he called it a splitter or a changeup, but Okajima would go through stretches where he would throw 10-15 of them in a row, and it didn't matter that the batter knew it was coming. But you're right, Koji has stretches like that with his splitter, too.

    The Pass-Happy Patriots

This is really similar to the conventional wisdom in baseball that you have to establish the fastball so that your offspeed/breaking stuff is more effective. There's definitely some truth to it, but if your offspeed stuff is good enough (and maybe also if your fastball isn't so great) you don't...

    Brady/Manning XVII

Yeah, that dropback pass win% stat might be the best illustration of that I've seen. If Belichick decides passing a lot is a good game plan, that's what they do, until it doesn't work, and they adjust. That number proves that literally no other coach has ever had the thought that mostly passing...

    The Bill Simmons Thread

You know, it's funny because the "scared while watching him hit in the postseason" reasoning is exactly the reason he loved the Sandoval signing.

    mlbtv

I'm having this problem too. Plenty of bandwidth and it works fine on other platforms. But on the firestick it buffers every 15-20 seconds. And of course other apps work just fine on the firestick. I guess the mlbtv app on firestick is just a piece of shit.

There's also a lot of great stuff in the SoundFX videos (the first six videos here):   http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-sound-efx   Some of the content is the same as what's in the Inside the NFL show, but there's a lot of new stuff too. Can anyone figure out how to save these too?

    #DFG: Canceling the Noise

Here's the work:   A drop from 12.5 PSI to 10.5 PSI is a ~7.4% drop (27.2 to 25.2 PSI in absolute pressure).   Gametime temperature was 50F (283K). If the temperature in the balls also dropped by ~7.4%, therefore explaining all of the pressure drop, the initial temperature must have been...

Dale Scott announces he is gay

He's been with his partner for 28 years and is married to him. It sounds like he's been about as out as a person can be for years. The media either didn't know it, or didn't think it was a story until someone at deadspin read last October's issue of Referee magazine.

    Derek Jeter: Countdown to Retirement

The Olbermann thing is so dumb. Being 13th or 14th in production out of 20 players with >12000 PA is hardly a point of criticism. That fact alone puts him as an all-time great.   And giving him a hard time for playing the whole schedule? Seriously?   The defense thing is very true though.

    Extending Lester

Yeah, this is really what it feels like is happening. Before the 2011 season, they signed Crawford for 7 years, and then extended Buchholz for 4 and Adrian Gonzalez for 7 early in the season. Since then (unless I'm forgetting something), the only contracts they've given out for >2 years have...

Red Sox launch study on pace of play at the request of Bud Selig

The NFL is the most popular thing ever, and an average NFL game takes 3 hours and 10 minutes and consists of only 11 minutes of actual action. Baseball is fine. People who complain that baseball games take too long really just don't like baseball, and wouldn't like it any more if the game took...

Let's Talk about the manager -- The John Farrell Thread

Yeah, my two thoughts about that game are:   1) Ross really let Farrell off easy by hitting that double. It would have been a really tough decision on Lester, but only because they have no bullpen depth and keep getting killed in the 6th/7th innings.   2) The other play of the game, in my...
