Lucas Giolito has an elbow issue.

And Turner. And Paxton. And Duvall.

Lucas Giolito has an elbow issue.

I mean, that's the argument I would make, but it's pretty obvious ownership doesn't see it that way...

Lucas Giolito has an elbow issue.

Or, at the very least, "See! This team has no shot to compete in 2024!"

    Offseason rumors

The path to the next Red Sox championship goes like this: -- Devers still in his prime and Casas entering his. -- Someone from the Duran/Rafaela/Abreu group becoming an impact starter in the outfield. -- Story at 2B and Yoshida at DH still making meaningful contributions. -- Minimum salary...

    Offseason rumors

I don't get why people get so upset at reporting -- or, really, microreporting via Twitter -- like this. Beat writers are constantly talking to agents and other executives who are constantly talking to the Red Sox front office, and I, for one, am interested to know what they're hearing.

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

Yes. Because a team that wins 88 with a $200 million payroll could have won more by spending up to the tax. They don’t owe us a number of wins. They owe us the most competitive team possible and are explicitly reneging on that obligation.

    Let's Lay Off That Throttle

Everyone who said the ownership was punting on competing for a championship post-2018 was right. Everyone who said they had a plan was wrong. I think that's pretty much where we're at now.

    Offseason rumors

I think I agree with this. If they're not prepared to spend up to, let alone over, the luxury tax, they're clearly not prioritizing competing for a championship in 2024. They're not going to be one pitcher away from winning it all. I don't agree with that strategy, but if that's the path they're...

The problem is, if it's obvious to give him $350 million, someone's going to give him $400 million.

I'd match that contract, too, but this is likely to go the way Ohtani's negotiations went: He'll pick a team and then the team will give him whatever contract he wants (within some semblance of reason). It's not going to be a pure bidding process where everybody gets a chance to raise.

    Offseason rumors

Maybe -- but Reyes can play 3B in a pinch and you always have Dalbec at AAA. Or maybe Dalbec makes the team over Refsnyder.

    Offseason rumors

I could easily see them signing Imanaga (18 AAV), Giolito (15 AAV), Teoscar Hernandez (15 AAV), and one of the big relievers like Jordan Hicks or Robert Stephenson (10 AAV) and then trading a couple of prospects in the 10-20 range for Brandon Drury. Duran CF, Casas 1B, Story SS, Devers 3B...

    Offseason rumors

Didn't we just see, and haven't we all been nervously laughing about, what happens when a team decides one guy is The Guy They Must Have At All Costs? That kind of thinking leads to giving Xander Bogaerts an 11-year, $280 million contract. I would for sure like them to be the high bidder on...

What does Red Sox starting pitching look like in 2024?

I agree that they should target the top of the market, but I also think that a team with five solid starters can absolutely compete, especially with a stacked lineup and bullpen. Sale, Bello, Imanaga, Lugo, and Crawford is a decent rotation. Jansen, Martin, Winckowski, Houck, Whitlock, Pivetta...

So....who is the new GM/head of baseball ops?

Breslow sounds great to me. A really smart, thoughtful person who has senior leadership experience with a forward-thinking club and specializes in the area in which the team is weakest? Sign me up for Breslow as the head guy and Romero as GM.

    Dombrowski

I know that's the easy characterization of Dombrowski's approach, but I think people get it wrong. I didn't like Dombrowski at all, but I wouldn't say he was rash or reckless. What he does, in my view, is 1) pick the guys he wants and 2) go get them regardless of the value proposition. It can...

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

No, it's a disastrous way to run an organization and also not a recipe for winning. It's listening to the whiner line instead of having a plan.

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

If they think they can find someone to execute the same game plan more effectively, then okay. If this is yet another zig-zag, it's a disastrous mistake.
