Did Schiraldi really crumble under the pressure?

Speaking of Dave Henderson - once he went to Oakland in 1988 and shared a roster spot with Jose Canseco - he had a 6.5 fWAR season and wRC+ of 151. Just like magic.

    Not Just a Pole

To answer the question - Dick Pole was a choker. Oh, wrong thread.

Did Schiraldi really crumble under the pressure?

LOL - apparently I based my judgement of him solely on my dad's complaining. Getting to a half win while playing in Fenway is hard. Edit: Looking a bit more closely, the advanced stats had them better defensively than I thought.

Did Schiraldi really crumble under the pressure?

The defense was pretty miserable too. Between Spike Owen, Ed Romero and Glenn Hoffman, they had 33 errors at short. Buckner had 14 and could barely stand. Barrett and Boggs were a little above average back then. Rice was never particularly good. Basically Dewey and Hendu were the stand outs...

Did Schiraldi really crumble under the pressure?

Just to expand the conversation since the topic is limited otherwise: 6 relievers (basically all of them) accounted for all but 20 innings ALL season. They only used 5 more guys all year, and they all had fewer than 6 innings pitched. Guys had rubber arms and basically were expected to be...

Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

Just to give a more crude in a vacuum example to illustrate the value or lack thereof for bringing in a platoon bat for a guy like Abreu who has a very extreme split. Hypothetically, let's say Wilyer Abreu has the same exact season but over 700 PA this year and never once bats vs a left handed...

Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

As I have stated before - they have had many opportunities to add right handed platoon bats for very cheap this offseason and not done so. I don't know what Grichuk's situation was in terms of interest in Boston but he has been the most consistent lefty masher over his career that was very...

Mozeliak was also pretty critical about how Contreras was handling the staff in 2023 as well 2 months after he was signed. Tough shoes to fill after Molina for sure, but throwing your prize free agent under the bus is not something that would happen over here that soon into a big deal. We...

Pecota is a very outdated model that was among the first to come out in 2003. Trying to figure out who is playing where and when is what makes it useless for a team like the Red Sox in particular. There isn't a lot of mystery with the Yankees and everyone on the Dodgers is good so of course...

Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

I get - but very much dislike if ownership doesn't want to go over the threshold for whatever reason (extensions are my one hope that's holding that up). What can't happen is a reported divide between Kennedy and Breslow's plan. That is absolute bullshit unless it's just Boras being Boras and...

That projection is a huge leap forward and has his obp as 2nd on the team next season. Regardless, he's not someone you move to leftfield, and it still doesn't address that they have Refsynder. And it also makes them look like idiots for trading for him in the first place if they don't keep...

Much like Newman, the Sox are not “Ready to deliver”– The 2025 Offseason News (& rumors?) Thread

Just to play along: Steamer is projecting .264/.339/.389 - good for a slightly above league average bat (wRC+ 103), which would be 9th at 2b (near Gleyber Torres who can actually play the field) or 23rd in left. In 2021 Verdugo played a lot of left field and had a slash of .280/.328/.405 (wRC+...

While I agree the bat decline isn't awful, the move down the defensive spectrum is what is inevitable, so it's not just whether the defense falls off a cliff. It's where you move the player since the bat won't hold up as well. Trea Turner has already lost 1.7 defensive bWAR playing short since...

Here are the 25 largest contracts in history and how they are going or how they went. These are not counting guys like Price, Kevin Brown, Holliday, Manny or Hampton. Huge Mistake: Anthony Rendon has produced 3.7 fWAR in 5 seasons with two to go. His best season by far was the COVID year...

I honestly think they just aren't looking at/prioritizing right handed hitting outfielders who contribute little else - be it value or roster fit. They have had every opportunity to sign one. Hays signed for 5 mill today and is a career wRC+ 120 vs lefties and a 2.5 win player in 2023.

I think he would play the latter anyhow. I've never really bought that's where they'd want him since it's not optimal when you build the significant risk of it backfiring into it.

    Sox Players that moved on....

I remember that his velocity had already dropped at least 3 MPH so he was maybe hitting 94 at best and then he obviously was throwing harder than ever the next season. The drop wasn't a recent thing either. Young, vibrant, misinformed Grimshaw was very sad, but defeated by life, cynical...

    Players worth after age 30

Correct, and DH's and 1b are much less likely to have ridiculous contracts because the floors aren't high with the defensive adjustment. Boras tried with JDM but I think the Sox were pretty happy overall. He was elite for his mostly DH position which had value in and of itself, and his market...
