    Concerning the "check cashed by future fans" and "commitment to losing later unless backed up by money," couldn't you make a similar argument for the non-monetary costs of carrying an ancient pitcher on your roster? Looking at Fried years 7 and 8, plus the lost draft pick from the QO.

    Correct. I should have said "all else being equal." But you're also right about the bigger point - we have no idea about differences in deferrals, opt-outs, etc.

    You can look at the difference between 700M and 730M as being 30 million bucks (a lot of money) or as a mere 4.3%. If Soto's perception of "quality of life" has any importance to him and if it favors the Red Sox, a 4.3% difference shouldn't sway him.
