    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

Sure. I’m not disputing that players or coaches betting on their own teams is horrible or that it doesn’t affect their decisions. I’m saying it doesn’t put the opposing teams at a disadvantage. And that therefore, while Pete Rose cheated at gambling, he didn’t cheat at baseball.

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

You're talking about cheating the gamblers out of money, not cheating an opponent out of a win. The home-run championship hypothetical you're bringing up is an example of a completely unintended consequence of gambling-motivated decisions, not of an intended victory achieved by cheating.

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I totally agree. I'm just asking whether this belongs in the category of "cheating." Let me put it another way - Would the Dodgers have any basis to think they lost the World Series unfairly if every Astros player and coach bet on themselves to win?

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I guess this is semantics, but am I the only one who doesn't think betting on games is cheating? I think that it's the worst sin of sports, and acts as a complete destruction of the integrity of the game, but how is it cheating? Isn't cheating a breaking of a rule or rules in a way that gives...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

Here's a link to what appears to be a pretty thorough list of health risks that come from the various performance enhancing drugs. No mention of cancer risk in this article, and the brain cancer connection does not appear to have ever been scientifically established, but there are various other...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I draw a line between someone like Bonds who took them to get bigger and stronger, and someone like Andy Pettite or Julian Edelman who were taking PEDs to heal quicker from injury. Don’t get me wrong though, I know that’s a thin line and the motivation for taking them is less important than the...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

The health compromises of football are inherent in the the actual play of the sport. The health compromises of steroid use are not necessary to the play of any sport. Steroid use is a voluntary decision by the player that we don’t allow because any sport can be played without it and its use by...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

It's worse to bet on your team to lose, for sure, but I think it's still a mortal sin to bet on your team to win. Every game should be managed to optimize the team's chances to win the championship, which is not the same thing as pulling out all the stops to win a single game. Maximizing your...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

Way less egregious, and I'd find it hard to believe that there's any team that hasn't been peaking into their own replay room on occasion during their regular seasons. I think MLB has to either put in the in-person monitors for both teams every game or take this out of the category of cheating...

If he's somehow innocent of all of this, this could be a situation where Brown's gigantic ego and incessant need to constantly record himself actually come in handy.

    SB53: We Need Links Thread!

My god Rob Parker. I know he's a moron Patriot hater, but seeing him presenting that list of 8 remaining playoff teams with Patriots on the bottom, is there a dumber sports pundit? Is he putting us on? View...

bill b first win as NE head coach

Yet another example of his brilliance as a coach. Rather than being mindlessly results-oriented or concerned about criticism for trying such an unorthodox move again, as so many coaches would be, he understood and relied upon the integrity of the logic.

    Celebrating What Is

Has any stadium in the history of sports had a more momentous last game of its life than Foxboro? Both in terms of the historical meaning of the outcome (Tom Brady's first playoff win, essentially the beginning of the dynasty), and the drama of the events of the game itself (tuck rule...

I just love that the 100 years of the NFL commercial had fun with the fact that Brady's won so many rings and debuted at the literal moment he was in the process of adding another one.

So many reasons to want just one more next year: Break tie with Steelers to become the Super Bowl winningest franchise. Belichik breaks tie with Halas and Lambeau to become coach with most championships. Tie Buffalo for most consecutive Super Bowl appearances, except without the...

Patriots fans, Yankees fans, and always being greedy for more

He first listed the muffed punt, the pass interference, and the Dee Ford offsides. He eventually conceded that the offsides was the right call, never mentioned the muffed punt again (probably because it can't contribute to any arguments about the Patriots not earning the victory even if you...

    AFCCG: Pats at Chiefs Buildup

Ah, I didn't realize he acknowledged not knowing. The other points are well-taken, especially the fact that Ford's offsides was a natural consequence of Brady's quick decisions all game.

    AFCCG: Pats at Chiefs Buildup

The whole point of focusing on the Dee Ford offsides is that it negated the interception, but isn't it entirely possible that Brady knew Ford was offsides and doesn't throw that exact throw if he didn't know he had a free play? The ref had his hand on his flag before the ball was hiked and he...
