    NPB & other Asia-Pac leagues 2024

Yeah it's been a pronounced, frustrating trend for a while now. The balls are made of recycled tatami mats or something. *Half* as many homers as five years ago! Chicks dig...the ritual sacrifice, I guess.

    NPB & other Asia-Pac leagues 2024

Some of the Giants' superstars are getting a bit older I guess - Maru & Sakamoto are both 35 now. And I suppose it's possible the Giants do have a player development issue, because two of their young guys who I really like based on the eye test haven't been able to put it together yet. 23yo...

    NPB & other Asia-Pac leagues 2024

Get out, I was across town watching the Swallows come back vs the Hanshin Tigers, putting up 5 in the bottom of the 8th to go up 6-5, and then throwing out the would-be tying run in the top of the 9th to end it. Amazing game in Jingu. Looks like yours was solid too, and not that I can root for...

    Willie Mays has passed away

There are four stadiums still in use that Ruth played in, and one of those is likely to be torn down & rebuilt in the next two years.

Who is the greatest living balllplayer?

Right, if you made a team of 26 healthy Shoheis vs 26 of any other player in history, Team Ohtani is winning basically every game. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/shohei-ohtani/19755/spray-charts?position=PB&type=battedball He's not really a pull hitter. It does of course help to be lefty...

    June 2024 MLB Gamethread

Absolutely wild one at Coors -- Dodgers with the ol' 7-run 9th. Jason Heyward hit a pinch hit grand slam off the foul pole to get the Dodgers within one run at 9-8, and that was just the beginning. Ohtani followed with a hit, Will Smith tried about six times to call time out with a full count...

How to raise an AI model in today's world

Not sure the best place for this but didn't think it needed its own thread -- does anyone use GroqCloud, or know much about the company in general? Domo.

    Plummeting Ticket Prices

I haven't fought and don't wish to fight @nvalvo but the Oakland Coliseum is one of the biggest shitholes I've ever seen a game at. What a dump. It was about 20 years ago, but I can't imagine it's gotten nicer since.

    May 2024 MLB Gamethread

Darvish consecutive scoreless innings streak now at 25 IP after he threw 7 shutout innings tonight vs ATL. He became the 3rd pitcher to get 200 combined wins in NPB/MLB, after Hideo Nomo (203) and Hiroki Kuroda (201).

Good call on the bump. I watched most of the game today, and he was ridiculous. The walk was after he got hosed on a 3-0 strike call on what should have been ball four, but he didn't get flustered -- took another strike, then protected on the full count, fouling one off, and then drew ball four...

Yoshinobu Yamamoto signs with Dodgers for 12 years, 325M

Could maybe have gone 7 today if a horrible missed 3rd strike call didn’t extend his 1st inning by 7-8 pitches or whatever it was. He’s throwing the curve a ton which isn’t something I remember from here, but if they’ve identified it as a plus pitch and more of a differentiator than his FB for...

I thought a Maddux was defined as a CGSO on fewer than 100 pitches. How is it possible to throw a shutout and lose? edit: BRef tells me Sheets had 4 career shutouts, 1 in 2001 and 3 in 2008. None of them were Madduxes. I think you have your definition and/or search terms wrong.

MLB suspends Trevor Bauer for 2 years with no pay

She is. And on Taiwanese baseball, and in general. She is great and I've been following her for years. Singed indeed. He had a tweet yesterday or the day before saying he's signed to pitch for 5 games for the Mexican team and that he's got offers from several Japanese (mystery) teams. If he...

Shohei Ohtani’s attorneys accuse interpreter of ‘massive theft’ tied to alleged gambling

Yes, people think that. I'm not sure why at this point, but they do. If there was no discussion of sports betting, you'd have put it more clearly than, "did not contain any messages that discussed sports betting"?

Shohei Ohtani’s attorneys accuse interpreter of ‘massive theft’ tied to alleged gambling

How are we all feeling about these takes now? I'm not looking for internet points, and the whole saga isn't yet put to bed so maybe more details could come out that do incriminate Ohtani, though that seems unlikely now. I'm just flagging them in the hopes that maybe in the future we won't be so...

Shohei Ohtani’s attorneys accuse interpreter of ‘massive theft’ tied to alleged gambling

It's pretty far down the list of unfortunate things in this whole saga but one thing I keep thinking about is that Ippei was basically the best actual translator any of these guys has ever had.

Sorry can you explain what you mean here — if the number was much higher, it is more likely to exonerate Ohtani? Or am I reading you wrong?
